indentAkemi eyes the fragrant fish laying in the camp. Her whiskers twitch. The cats had said the food in the 'freshkill pile' were free to eat, but she has a hard time believing that. Fish are hard to catch, making you get your fur wet in order to get your claws on them. Food like that is way too good to give up to some stranger.

indentThough, Akemi supposes she might not be a 'stranger' any more. She's been camping out with these cats for a few days now, and even gotten her wounds looked at by their 'medicine cat'. Despite the proximity, Akemi hardly feels like friends with these cats. She's been so grateful just to have food at shelter, she doesn't want to impose too much on these cats by wasting their time with small talk. So she's kept to herself, for the most part, staying crouched in the back of the nursery, only coming out every so often, for a breath of fresh air or a mouse from the freshkill pile.

indentToday, something else has caught her eye. Akemi has tried so hard not to look to closely at the fish whenever she comes to choose fer meal. If she stares too long, her mouth will start to water, and she won't be able to shake the thought of a watery meal from her mind for the rest of the day. Now, her eyes locked onto the grey scales, she can't stop the idea of sneaking a bit for herself.

indent"Excuse me?" She mews, calling to another cat who had come to claim their meal. "Is it, uh, okay if I eat some of this?"

It was odd. RiverClan was bustling with new cats from all over the place. With the campground kittypets, the return of his siblings, and with an expecting molly Dogflicker had brought to the clan. It was strange to be seeing so many new faces given the fact that the clan had lost so much. He... He wanted to be happy. He truly did want to be happy with these recent developments, but he couldn't help but think about the many mouths they had to feed. I kinda regret telling Wavesong I'm not worried about Leafbare. I wasn't expecting this many mouths to feed. Then we have more kittens to look forward to. Not that I'm mad about it, but I just hope they'll be okay. Leafbare isn't exactly easy for kits.

With a sigh, the leader heads to a pile of fish the clan has gathered. He hadn't eaten all day, too worried about the incoming frost that would arrive. Maybe I should hold this moon's meeting soon. We'll have more warriors on patrols to hunt and gather herbs. Do we have any new apprentices this moon? I... I don't think so. His thoughts are swiftly cut short when a brown molly calls out to him. Green eyes linger a little too long on her form. With everything going on and how recently she joined the clan, it takes him awhile to scrape his mind for her name. He does know her... As the expecting molly Jinglemoon is looking after, which... Actually that's kind of bad huh? In any case he nods his head.
"Yes?"

The question she's thrown his way, only makes him raise a brow in confusion.
"Why wouldn't it be okay?"
While it's true that she may not be working like Kuhli or Brook to learn RiverClan's ways, she's certainly not doing anything. He'd argue she is undertaking the most grueling task. One that he will never experience, but one he understood needed the most care. It didn't matter to him whether or not she was one of them. No one in this clan would allow her to leave now either. For all this clan's faults, they were united when it came to children. Jinglemoon's care for Akemi was proof of that. There were also members of the clan that brought fresh bedding.
"You need to eat. Not just for you, but for your little ones."
He takes the fish he had been eyeing and drops it gently in front of her.

"We can always go catch some more. I'm sure if you ask, plenty of us are more than happy to bring you something you like. We do have food other than fish, y'know? A few us actually prefer a nice squirrel over fish. Some prefer birds too."

Wavesong watched with bright curiosity as Akemi lingered by the fresh-kill pile, her gaze fixed on the fish as if uncertain whether she was allowed to touch it. The RiverClan molly tilted her head slightly, had the newcomer not picked anything yet? A mother, and a new one at that, deserved her fill. No cat, especially one with kits to feed, should ever go hungry. Not in this clan. Her thoughts were abruptly interrupted by a sharp little nip to her paw. " Oi! " she exclaimed, laughing as she looked down to find the culprit. " Piranha, I am not yer chew toy! " she teased, gently bapping the kit on the head before returning the favor with a playful nip to their ear. Her purr lingered as she padded forward, settling comfortably near Pikestar and Akemi, a grin tugging at her muzzle.

" Aye, Akemi. " she purred warmly, tone kind. " Yer not obliged t'ask if ye can eat. If yer hungry, take a fish for yerself, only thing we ask is ye leave a few for the rest of us, aye? " She gave a light laugh, the teasing glimmer in her eyes softening into something maternal. Behind her, there was the familiar rustle of movement, and she smiled as Troutkit peeked out from beneath her long, feathery tail. His little eyes were wide, curious as ever, his head tilting at the sight of the stranger. The affection that bloomed in her chest was immediate and fierce, she could never tire of that face.

" We're gonna do our best t'help ye through this. " she said gently, her gaze returning to Akemi, voice firm with quiet promise. " Ye an' yer guppies. RiverClan looks after its own. "

˚ʚ♡ɞ˚ Baby do you know what you wanna hear?

indentAs soon as Akemi speaks up, the forest cats rush to reassure her. "You need to eat. Not just for you, but for your little ones." Her lower lip trembles as she eyes the fish Pikestar had dropped before her. "No, It's alright! Fish is actually a favorite of mine, but I've never been able to catch it on my own." Back home - at her old home, her sister had always fished for them. "I just can't stand getting my fur wet. You all don't seem to mind it very much, though." Akemi smiles, shyly. Admitting to her dislike of water made her feel a little silly in front of these cats, who seemed to comfortable in it. Often, when she sat at the entrance of the nursery, she'd watch as hunting parties returned with slicked back, wet fur, and wonder how they managed to stand it.

indentGreedily, Akemi takes the offered fish by the tail, and carries it just a few tail-lengths away from the pile. Usually, she'd eat her meals in the shadow of the nursery, but today, she needs a change. From here, she can keep talking while she eats. " We're gonna do our best t'help ye through this. Ye an' yer guppies. RiverClan looks after its own. " Akemi looks to the older molly, eyes round and wet. "Looks after it's own? Does that mean..." The implication makes her heart beat rabbit fast. It had felt like only a few sunrises since she had been cast out of her last home. Being accepted into a new home, so soon, with such little asked of her... it felt wrong, almost.

indentAkemi isn't one to turn down the kindness of others, though. If Riverclan has set out to make itself her new home, she'll gladly take up the offer. "That's right! Once I'm able, I'll help take care of everyone, too." Her voice is lighter than it has been in weeks, rising from her chest like babbling spring water. She smiles wide, blinking away the wetness at the corner of her eyes.

As Crescentpaw works on tangling a particularly annoying matt out of her fur he feels his ear flicker with recognition at the sound of his ma's voice. The gentle reprimanding he's used to hearing when one of his younger siblings decide to test out their teeth, seemingly mostly on her. There's a thought to join and ask if she wanted him to take Piranhakit away for a while but the sight of Pikestar brings her pause. The albino is pretty sure she understands how it felt to be one of those pieces of wood stuck within the tide of the ocean at the shipyard now. Drawn into the conversation due to family but then drawn away due to a one sided tension, gnawing at that particular strand of knotted fur he only decides on the best course of action when it's free. With great reluctance long legs push themselves up and he's left stumbling like a fish out of water towards the trio. Butting her head gingerly against Wavesong's shoulder as she approaches. "I'm surprised your tails still in tact, ma" the muttering is soft, followed by a sharper exhale of breath from his nostrils in amusement.

"You get used to it after a while" he offers to Akemi, grimacing at the thought of his own fur getting damp. It felt weird trying to relate to someone older than she is but he understands the uncertainty in her eye. No one unless they're a kit could ever claim to know this place their whole life, at one point they were all scared and not sure where their places were in the world right? No, that was a little dramatic. He understood her to an extent though she supposes. "Between you and me though, I still hate getting my fur wet" he just learnt to accept it but maybe Akemi could even learn to love it.

"Looking after yourself and your kits is already helping take care of everyone." Internally he cringes hearing himself speak, she feels so old saying things like that. It's a reminder of his age, maturity settling into her spirit finally even if he wasn't thrilled about it. There's conviction in her words though, a sparkling warmth in her eyes that rivaled her mothers own natural good natured spirit.

FALLING FOR THE PROMISE OF THE
EMPTINESS MACHINE

.

Russetfall strides into camp with a rabbit clutched firmly in her jaws, briefly stopping to shake water from her coat before placing her catch on the freshkill pile. Ears swivel to the conversation with one of the newcomers- Akemi, wasn't it?- and the lifeguard frowns intently before moving to join the small group.

"I suspect once leafbare is in full swing we'll all hate getting our fur wet," She muses, glancing sidelong at Crescentpaw's comment. "Once things warm up again I'm sure anyone will be happy to teach you how to fish."

Herself included, though the molly still wasn't sure she was cut out for teaching. Thunderpaw seemed to be getting on well enough, but surely that was some kind of consistent fluke. She shakes her head of the thought before leveling Akemi with a hardened stare.

"...If you want to help, keep doing what you're doing. Grow strong for your kits, the rest we can figure out later." The only real priority Akemi should have was to be sure her kits were born strong and healthy. Riverclan had struggled and clawed and suffered too much for another litter to be born under dire circumstances like Wavesong's brood.

Her pelt prickled uneasily at the thought. Akemi and her unborn kits were the main concern, undoubtedly, but the life guard also worried that if such a thing were to happen so soon after Shellkit's death and Rainpaw's disappearance... It'd push Jinglemoon into a pit he'd struggle to pull himself out from. One she wasn't sure she'd be able to help with.

Russetfall shakes her head once more before turning to pad away, unnerved by the idea. "If you need anything else, moss or whatever, just ask."

Piranhakit started giggling toothily, it was truly a masterful gambit to randomly chomp on Wavesong's paw for no reason other than being playful. "Umm? Obviously not!" He poked out his tongue in agreement with Wavesong saying she wasn't a chew toy. "You're way cooler away more awesome-er and swimmier than a chew toy!!" He announced as if he wanted all to hear him and once more giggled as she bopped him and nipped his ear in return. "You're my mama! That's the best thing, like, ever!" Even better than biting things? Must be, if he didn't mention his favorite hobby.

Ever the confident boy, Piranhakit jumped and padded over to the group that had gathered, looking up the cat newest to him- Akemi. "I like to swim. Water can be fun, but mama always says to treat the river with respect, because it can be wild too. I can teach you how to swim!" Bold claim, for someone so small, but a claim made from the will to help others. It was how he was being raised, after all.

Those bones in my jaw, don't have a flaw, my shiny teeth and me~!

A warm smile bloomed across Wavesong's face as she nodded to Akemi, watching the queen take the fish with a soft purr. " There ye go now, gotta keep yerself in tip-top shape, aye? Strong an' ready fer th'wee ones when they decide t'make their grand splashy entrance. " she laughed, settling herself down with a lazy flick of her tail. Her heart swelled when Crescentpaw padded over, and she let out a delighted chuckle. " Oh, don't give me that look, guppy. I've survived kits nippin' m'tail more times than I can count, includin' yers. " She reached out to gently bap her child atop the head, playful as ever.

Akemi's voice pulled her attention back, and hearing the younger molly vow to help when she could made her grin wide and fanged. " That's th'spirit. Family means watchin' out fer each other, no matter the tides. " A jolt that coursed through her heart, a smile that was a split second too wide before she leaned over to give Akemi a soft shoulder-bump of reassurance. Crescentpaw, ever thoughtful, insisted that helping care for their kits was just as important as anything else. Oh, Wavesong's chest ached at that. Her baby, growing into their heart so beautifully.

" Aye, th'water's colder than a shark's stare these days. " she exhaled, whiskers twitching at the creeping memory of kitting gone wrong, Jinglemoon's hard working paws, Strawberrykit's mother fading away, little Rainpaw disappearing into the currents of fate... She swallowed, forcing the dread down where her kits would never see it. Then Piranhakit squeaked something bold, and her mood caught on the hook of his tiny voice. " Damn right I'm cooler than a chew toy. " Wavesong barked out a laugh, scooping him close to rasp her tongue affectionately over his head. He smelled of reeds and mischief, perfect. She nudged him forward again so he could keep talking to Akemi, listening with that fierce mother-pride shining in her sky-blue eyes.

And when he began to recite the lessons she'd drilled into their little skulls? Stars, she nearly melted right there. Her guppies were growing. And she would cling to every heartbeat of it.
