Her stomach rumbled again, loudly enough that she winced. Pepperblaze dragged herself forward with her ears pinned flat, a deep frown creasing her face. Prey was scarce. Too scarce. And though she hated admitting it, hunger clawed at her every waking moment. She never bulked out like some queens did. She was supposed to be thin, quick, elegant... But now her frame was growing leaner than she liked, every rib a reminder of how badly things were slipping.
A puff of breath escaped her and she forced her ears upright, just in time to catch the sound of her name being called, his voice, warm and familiar. That flutter in her chest answered before she could stop it. She shut her eyes halfway, composing herself, and slunk in his direction. There he was. Eagleheart. A thin smile tugged at her mouth before she hastily erased it, rolling her eyes as she stepped from the reeds with a practiced smirk.
" Can you be any louder? " she scolded, though her stomach betrayed her with a growl the second she saw the voles he'd brought.
Oh stars... Voles. Her favorite. It felt like seasons since she'd tasted something so rich. Trust this big featherbrain to always catch exactly what she loved most. She huffed softly, eyes dropping to the ground for a heartbeat. She knew this... Them, it was something frowned upon. Borders were meant to divide loyalties, hearts, lives. But love didn't care for borders, didn't care what Clan you belonged to. And she had tried, really, tried to be sharp-tongued and distant with him. But Eaglepaw, now Eagleheart, he had never stopped coming back. And she... She had only gotten more creative about slipping away to meet him. Midnight borders, star-watching, quiet laughter. The first time he'd made her laugh? She still remembered how startled she'd been by the sound.
They were together, but not together. Not officially. Not safely. But something growing inside her told her it was real. Real enough that choosing felt impossible. Her family was in ShadowClan. Her whole life was there. She couldn't leave, not yet. But every time she met those pretty eyes of his... A slow smile curved her lips as she looked up at him.
" Glow? I'm sure you must be looking at some other cat. One who's actually full and doesn't have bones sticking out. " She chuckled, sweeping her tail lightly beneath his chin before all grace fled and she practically dove onto the vole. The first bite nearly made her melt.
Then she noticed the flower.
Her laugh bubbled out between chews as she snatched it and tucked it behind her ear, playfully exaggerated.
" Well? " she cooed, striking a dramatic pose and fluttering her lashes at him.
" Do I look dainty and pretty now, Eagle? "
