Oh, the night before had been filled with laughter and camaraderie. Now, the stars dimmed as daybreak welcomed them, and every breath fogged the chilled air. There was too much riding on their survival to leave the division of work to anyone else. Or rather she was too stubborn to relinquish control over something so important.
Giavonna slipped out from the monster husk, the sting of cold air offering a splash of clarity. A piece of cloth draped over her bony frame fluttered with each step as she made her way up the garbage mound and onto the cushion.
Below in the haze of dawn, a meager crowd gathered. Warm breath creating puffs of smoke from parted maws.
She cleared her throat and raised her chin. Sleep still had a hold, her voice smooth and worn like tarnished velvet. "We have much to do in the coming days. Know that our survival depends on how well we prepare." They'd all danced this dance before. A melody and a rhythm she sang for them come every shedding of the leaves. "I expect everyone to pull their weight, even these old bones will be working hard beside you. If you discover that your skills are not suited to these tasks, come and see me. I will find work for you."
The old molly's lidded gaze drifts to each of the first trio. "Socket. Rusted Metal. Hook." A pointed selection that are well-suited for what has been prepared for them. "Stock up on herbs before the frost takes them. Additionally, I have heard something interesting about Dark Maw that may interest you. Speak with me after." The latter was secondary, but she knew her surgeon well. That intriguing mind of theirs may well find the mystery worth checking out.
"Gaia. It's been too quiet in the Dog Yard recently for my liking. Take Melinoe and Tire and see what that hound is up to." A more serious expression settles on her face. "Oh, and speaking of hounds… If you have time, find the mongrel who's been shirking his duties. Rachet did not bring those kits into this world alone." If she were just a little younger, she would've dragged that good-for-nothing back, kicking and screaming as a present for dear Rachet. Poor thing, having to raise those kits alone. Giavonna couldn't care less what they did with that loach. The outcome where he didn't return might well be for the best. If he wouldn't provide and care for them, then she and her Rustclaws would.
"Last but not least, Brick. Gather a patrol and start collecting bedding scraps and anything fit to eat. I'd suggest Talon or Gem for their expertise and—" A yawn splits her maw. "—and a cadet or two." She pulls the cloak tighter around her hunched shoulders. "Go on now."
