I SIP A TOAST TO NORMALCY

Magnoliapeak is not the nurturing sort. Regardless of the love that had been given to her by her parents, there had been pressure too. A constant expectation to be the best. An expectation that she passes on to clanmates, apprentices, and to potential future children. She is all hard lines and sharp edges, like hard clay that forces roots to fight for proliferation within its surface. Then again, it could be argued that Serpentberry had not been nurturing either. Her children loved her, but Magnoliapeak had not been so easy to have the wool pulled over her eyes. They had both been so leery of one another it could have been possible they were the only ones who had been privy to the other's true nature. Like a sour reflection. She and Serpentberry, the snake and the hawk, both predatory within their own rites.

The dead medicine cat leaves many grieving children in her wake, a stiff recognition of much of ThunderClan. Magnoliapeak is not the sort to grant much more than pity. She too had lost a parent unexpectedly, and she too had gotten over it. But somehow looking at Rowanpaw had made cracks form in the veneer she had cast over her heart after Bracken had died. There is something tendril-like that reaches out toward the medicine cat apprentice, beckoning her to be with Rowanpaw in the slipstream of her dead mother. It had been obvious enough that Serpentberry had poisoned her children against Magnoliapeak (though she cannot blame her, she would have done the same to her own children), but in her absence...

Magnoliapeak uncomfortably pokes into the medicine cat den. The light in here is low, but the air is more welcoming now that it is not overlaid with saccharine. Rowanpaw peers at her with a gaze that is uncertain as ever, amber eyes glinting in the morning light. She takes a breath, the overwhelming scent of herbs nearly making her eyes water. "I cannot pretend to know exactly what it is that you feel," she begins slowly. Stiff, like a nervous dog. "But I know what it's like." She directs her eyes at her paws, shuffling uncomfortably like an apprentice. Magnoliapeak wonders if there is even a singular maternal bone in her body. "You have already become like a rock for this clan," Magnoliapeak raises her gaze again to meet Rowanpaw's "You may be uncertain of it. But you are well-prepared for it, even if you feel blind and deaf. There is not much else we can rely on right now," she pauses, silence hanging between them.

Magnoliapeak is, perhaps, the last cat that Rowanpaw expects to enter the medicine cat den. She'd never seemed to like the place much, but then, her mother had not done much to make it welcoming. In Serpentberry's absence, the den has softened; mossy nests, carefully chosen flowers to mask the stronger herbs scents, and of course, the lack of venomous fangs. When Magnoliapeak speaks, her voice is unsteady, but her words are true. There is no pain in Rowanpaw's chest to prove otherwise.

She smiles gently, dipping her head. "Thank you, Magnolia… I…" she hesitates for a moment, then decides to not put up any pretenses. She doesn't feel any need to, strangely. "I know my mother could be very difficult. You are right; I am neither blind nor deaf. But you… helped me, despite your personal feelings, and for that, I'm grateful. You are perhaps… the only one who saw Serpentberry as wholly as I did…" she meets Magnoliapeak's eyes. "I'm under no illusion as to what her flaws were. And for whatever it's worth, I… I always admired you…" she looks away again, feeling suddenly embarrassed. "I wanted to be a warrior too. I wanted to be strong, like you, and help the clan… but my leg…" her torn ear twitches as memories of her fall flash behind her eyes. "I am helping the clan now in a different way. I will try to be… their rock," she smiles again, careful.
