what a shame we all became

Rain could hardly believe it had already been a moon since the kits were born. She was... truly exhausted, but it was so worth it. Every day she woke up in awe of how much they seemed to have grown overnight. The first time they'd opened their eyes, she cried. They'd already started saying their first words - awkward, silly little things. She'd loved their little baby babbling, but she couldn't wait for them to be able to hold a conversation. To tell her what was wrong instead of crying. She was extremely grateful for the other caretakers in the nursery for their help. She hadn't taken much time away from the kits, but it was nice to know she had the option.

As it stood, she was starving. She couldn't believe how hungry she found herself - perhaps even more than she had been when she was pregnant. She peered at the kits, tumbling over one another beside her in their nest. They'd already nursed and napped that morning, and even a few days ago they probably would have been curled up at her belly still. But the more they grew, the more restless they became. Maybe, instead of leaving them with one of the other caretakers, she'd take them out into camp. Thus far they'd only been allowed brief glimpses of the outside world. She was sure they'd like a little bit more room to play in, and there were still plenty of clanmates they had yet to meet.

She lowered her head and glanced around conspiratorially.
"How would you all feel about coming outside to get breakfast with me?"
She whispered, as if this was some sort of secret mission she was assigning them. Before they could get too excited, she added,
"There will be rules, though. You must stay in my sight at all times. And no getting under the warrior's paws - they are very busy! And as soon as I think you're getting sleepy, we come right back inside for a nap."
She paused, waiting for their confirmation, before straightening with a nod.

"Let's go then!"
Gently guiding them with her tail - she especially wanted to keep an eye on quiet little Songkit - she led them towards the entrance of the nursery, then out into the pale sunlight of the Leaffall day. There was a chill to the breeze, but it wasn't so cool out that she was worried about the kits. After all, she could take them back inside as soon as they felt cold.
"Welcome to Skyclan, little ones,"
she purred brightly.

KITTEN

Pearkit's first thought was to wait for Mothkit, to see their reaction. He didn't need to look at them to feel the excitement flutter in his chest and so he blinked at his mama, nodding. "Good" he tried to say. "Will me." It made sense in Pearkit's mind, but to the outside world, it was mainly just blabbing.

Standing up on shaky legs, Pearkit followed after mama. The sun was a little too much at first, but Pearkit narrowed her eyes and took it all in. The world was so big, Pearkit wasn't sure where to look first. She wanted to express her wonder, but there were no words she knew that could be said about what she was seeing. Instead she sat down, moving her gaze around the camp. There were so many unknown cats around her, so many smells and noises...

"Moth?" Pearkit turned to its sibling. "Like?" What Pearkit was asking and was sure Mothkit would understand, was whether they shared the same feeling, the same amazement of the world. Pearkit itself knew that it found this sight beautiful, mesmerising. So many things it's never seen before, all new and fascinating. And then Pearkit figured out how it could express its feeling without words and so it purred and purred, looking at its mama lovingly. It hoped life was filled with more feelings like this one, feelings that kept it warm inside.

Flutterkit was the first one out of the den behind her mother, her little eyes blinking at the brightness and colors and everything.

There were so many sights and sounds and smells that it would be expected for the little kitten to get overwhelmed, but instead Flutterkit could only feel a surge of excitement and interest. Her determined pawsteps followed Rain as the little gorup walked out of the den for the first time together.

"Mama!" she mewed, looking up at one of the bigger cats that passed by. "Mama, who is?" Flutterkit looked to her mother, then to the other cats around. Her little mind could barely keep all her littermates and the others in the nursery remembered, and now there was a whole Clan of them!

Her chatter became an incessant "Mama, who is?" queried at each cat her eyes landed upon, but still she followed Rain to the scent of food.

Brightnose watches as Rain appears from within the nursery, her kits stumbling out after her with unbalanced steps, tiny eyes drinking in the sights before them. Their first time out in camp... Brightnose is often busy, or out in the territory, so she hardly has time to visit the children. It'll be a while longer before she has to step out into the depths of the forest once again, so she decides to cross the camp over to them, swishing her tail in greeting to Rain with a smile.

"Good to see you, Rain," she greets her - "And you as well, little ones. Stars, you've all gotten so big already! You'll be apprentices in the blink of an eye!" She looks at them with warmth in her eyes. I wonder if the warriors thought I was this cute when I was a tiny little furball...
"I'm Brightnose,"
she says simply, a small purr of laughter in the direction of Flutterkit's repeated questioning of every cat she lays eyes on. "It's lovely to meet you." Of course, she's technically already met them, but they don't remember that. Best not to confuse their little brains with technicalities when they're already taking in so much new information.

Out, Songkit quickly learned, is where Mama goes when she disappears from her son's sight. She always comes back, always — but even the boy can't help but be curious as to where she goes, and why she goes. Doesn't she have all she needs right here in their home?

He gets his answers soon enough, an offer in his mother's soft tone that leaves Songkit wide eyed. Outside? Mama was letting them go to out with her? The little gray kit would get to see what she sees everytime she steps out, would get to see why she does so? A nod follows her words, and excitement bubbles in his chest despite the rules she lays out. Stay in her sight, don't get under the warriors' paws. Perhaps these are meant more for his siblings than him, but Songkit promises his mama he'll do good regardless.

She guides her gaggle forward, and Songkit sticks close to his mother's form as he's ushered forward to take his first steps outside of the only home he's ever known. And he's welcomed by light, by bright colors, a shift in temperature, and so many things to look at. Perhaps too many, for the soft-hearted boy. A small squeak gives way to his alarm; his littermates' words fill his ears, full of excitement and eagerness to explore.

" Mama — " he tries, a hushed voice barely an echo to Flutterkit and Pearkit. Flutterkit asks who all the new faces are, and Songkit's ears flatten with the amount of times she repeats the words. How many lived in out? How many names would he have to learn, far past his mothers, his siblings, and the rest that live in the nursery, that cherish its warmth and seclusion?

One of the new faces approaches, and Songkit presses to his mother's form, hiding behind her as best he can as he peers up at the green-eyed warrior as she speaks to Rain. Brightnose, she calls herself — one name learned out of so many. While it is better than none, while the process was less harmful than feared, he still nudges at his mother's side with his nose, trying to get her attention. " Mama... All done? " Or would it ruin his siblings' fun to beg to go back inside? To return to safety for just a while longer?

maybe you feel the same ?

Mothkit's eyes went wide as their mother bent, eyeing her children with a look they couldn't quite explain. Outside? Breakfast? They did like breakfast, but they didn't really understand why Mama had to go outside for breakfast. Maybe Mama had an even bigger Mama outside that she went to see? They couldn't wait to meet bigger Mama. Excitement tingled in their paws and fluttered in their chest, and they could tell Pearkit was just as excited. It seemed only Songkit was weary as they tumbled after their mother and into the wide, bright world outside.

They blinked against the sunlight, a foreign feeling on their face. It was almost cold outside of the nursery's walls, and their senses were bombarded with sights and sounds and smells. They recoiled at all of it, wanting to disappear back into the nursery. Flutterkit was mewing about something, and Songkit was afraid, but a brightness blazed in Mothkit's mind. A joy. They looked to Pearkit, and could feel her purring wildly at their side. They tilted their head to one side.
"Like..."
they repeated their sibling with a small, cautious smile.

A warrior approached them with a smile, and Mothkit stared up with wide eyes. Was this bigger Mama? No... She didn't smell like milk like Mama did. They ducked back slightly, then looked up to Mama and saw that she was smiling, so they smiled too. She said her name was Brightnose.
"Bitenose!"
Mothkit repeated, waving their tail shyly. Then, feeling emboldened, they took a tottering step away from their mother and toward the center of camp. It was so big!

Pearkit watched all his clanmates shuffle by, the cats as big as mama, or bigger. Why were he and his siblings so small in comparison? Pearkit didn't understand, but the thought fluttered away just as quickly as it had arrived, replaced by another and then another. Soon, all of Pearkit's attention was on Brightnose, the warrior big and confusing, but her smile was welcoming. Pearkit felt a bit shy and a bit curious, confused about all these feelings mixed inside of him.

But Mothkit approached the tall cat and so Pearkit followed, anxious, but determined not to leave her sibling to leave mama's side by themself. "Bwightnous" Pearkit tried to repeat the she-cat's name. It was hard to pronounce, Pearkit's tongue rolling stranglely over her teeth. Her siblings' names were a lot easier to say. "Moffkit" Pearkit tried, nodding to herself - yes, Mothkit's name was easy. "Rain, Fluttewkit, Songkit" she recited quietly, testing the names out.

His family's names were a lot easier than those of the rest of the clans. The she-cat mama brought to them had a complicated name - Quisalis? Chwysalis? And her mate was no better, with a long name that Pearkit couldn't remember. Mama's name was nice and short.

Pearkit was so lost in thought, he didn't even realise Mothkit had moved closer to Brightnose, and Pearkit stumbled quickly after them, wanting to catch up. Pearkit hoped Mama was watching them, afraid of losing her in this big vast space - she often left them in the nest, but she always always came back. What if Pearkit didn't know how to get back? He stuck close to Mothkit, not letting his eyes leave their coat, anchoring himself with his sibling.

"Bitenose!" she echoed with a laugh, pouncing awkwardly at the older cats' tail. "Meet you, Bitenose!" Flutterkit giggled as she toddled instead after the warrior, trying to mimic her way of holding herself. Flutterkit stood on her toes, trying to stretch to be as tall as the warrior was, straining her head to even reach the top of her leg.

"Bitenose! Up!" she mewed. "Look! Up!" Faer legs stretched up juuuust a bit more, only for her balance to shift. The kit tumbled head over paws, skidding to a stop in the dirt and sniffling weakly.

Let me die, let me drown, lay my bones in the ground
I will still come around when the time for sleep is through
Over hill, over dale, through the valley and vale
Do not weep, do not wail, I am coming home to you

Teaselfeather watched Rain step into the clearing, their eyes brightening at the sight of the tiny shapes tumbling after her. A smile softened their whole face, curling at the edges of their muzzle as memory washed over them like sunlight through leaves. Once, that had been them, tottering at Flowercloud's heels with their siblings, tripping over each other in giggles and kitten-clumsy paws. The swell of ache in their chest surfaced for a heartbeat, Rosebelly, Lavenderpaw, everything lost... But it faded into the gentler warmth of remembrance. The laughter. The singing they used to soothe Cygnetkit. The safety of days when the world had felt kinder, smaller.

Simpler times. Gone, but still theirs.

A soft exhale escaped them as they stepped closer, their mismatched hues bright with quiet affection as they watched the kits gather around Rain's paws. Pearkit, especially, a tiny shadow glued faithfully to Mothkit's side. " They've grown so big already... " Teaselfeather murmured, voice as airy and warm as a whispering breeze. " No longer little worms. " Their smile lifted, fond and sincere as they glanced toward Rain. " You must be so proud of them. "

Flutterkit's tumble drew their gaze, and Teaselfeather's expression softened even further. They lowered themselves gently, extending a careful paw to steady the young kit. " Hello, little ones... " they said, warmth glowing in their eyes. " Welcome to SkyClan. " With soft patience, they helped Flutterkit find their paws again. " Are you alright...? "

Brightnose feels like her heart might explode from how cute these kittens are. As soon as she introduces herself, they all recite her name the best they can, their still-developing voices getting stuck on a syllable or two - but it's the thought that counts. Guess I'm 'Bitenose' now. Haha.
"Good job, all of you! You're very intelligent."
She purrs loudly as Flutterkit approaches her, a warm chuckle escaping her at fae's attempt to be just as tall as the silver warrior. "I'm looking, I'm looking! You're so big and tall!"

It seems Flutterkit tries a little too hard to be tall, however, and fae take a little tumble as fae lose faer footing. Teaselfeather is quick to approach the kitten, and Brightnose sits beside the little one in an effort to comfort her.
"Awe, don't push yourself too hard, okay Flutterkit? It won't be too long before you're as tall as me. Maybe even taller! Then I'll be the one trying to stand as tall as you." Brightnose isn't sure if Flutterkit actually understands everything she's saying, but she hopes her point comes across well nonetheless...

Flutterkit had only sniffled a little when she'd tumbled over, but as Teaselfeather and Brightnose expressed their concerns the sniffling grew into more chest-heaving breaths.

It hadn't hurt, but if two adults were trying to make sure she was okay, maybe something was wrong and she just couldn't tell?

"I... okay?" she whimpered, looking up at the two adults. As they both spoke to her, her worry faded, and she looked at them brightly.

"Okay! Alright!" she reassured Teaselfeather, rubbing against their leg. Faer attention then switched to Brightnose, and her eyes widened.

"Taller than Bitenose?" she breathed. "Bitenose tall though!"

what a shame we all became

The first thing to hit her ears upon stepping outside was the chatter of sweet Flutterkit asking who everyone was. Rain offered a small smile, trying to keep up with faer demands, until she realized that her daughter wasn't listening anyway. She was quickly pulled away by Brightnose's appearance, alongside Pearkit and Mothkit. After purring a greeting to Brightnose with a dip of her head, Rain let out a small breath of relief. She loved her children more than anything, but they could be... a lot. Upon reaching the freshkill pile, she retrieved a mouse for herself. Her belly rumbled at the sight of a squirrel, but she pushed the desire away. There was still a nagging guilt in her mind, reminding her of what a rotten thing it had been to appear and beg this clan for shelter and food and a place to raise her children. Soon, she'd be able to begin paying them back. In the meantime, she would be content with a mouse.

She felt a small nudge to her side and realized Songkit was looking up at her with sad, wet eyes. All done? he asked. Her chest tightened at the anguish in his tiny voice.
"Oh, Song,"
she murmured. Setting her mouse down, she carefully laid down beside her son and swept him against her belly with her tail.
"Let's stay out here a little longer, but you can lay with me if you want, okay?"
She rasped her tongue over his head in an effort to comfort him, her tiny shadow.

She watched Flutterkit get up on her hind legs, crowing for Brightnose - Bitenose - to look with a grin. Flutterkit certainly knew how to appeal to the masses. Meanwhile Pearkit and Mothkit were off to the side, seemingly in their own world, as they often were. It was interesting seeing the way their personalities came out as they grew. She had to admit, she was worried about Songkit, though a part of her relished his clingy behavior. It felt... nice. She supposed that was selfish. But looking down at him, she didn't know how she could possibly tell him no, to grow up, to find some independence sooner rather than later. He needed her.

Rain looked up as Teaselfeather approached, and smiled in greeting.
"Little worms,"
she repeated with a laugh.
"I'm very proud. Though I must admit, I'm not sure where she gets that,"
she flicked her tail towards Flutterkit, who almost immediately tumbled over herself. Rain started to her paws, but Teaselfeather and Brightnose were quick to right her, and fae was immediately back to pestering Brightnose. Rain settled with a nod and turned her attention back to Songkit.
"That cat's name is Teaselfeather,"
she purred gently to her son.
"You might not remember them, but they're one of my friends. See? It's not so bad out here."
