MEDICINE CAT

Jinglemoon wasn't going to argue with Frostmoth on who was sent on what patrols but... The cats that had ended up on his herb patrol almost felt like a personal slight-- Not from Frostmoth, he was sure the deputy didn't mean anything by it and maybe didn't even know of the medicine cats' frustration with their leader in the current moment. But still, Pikestar, his siblings and Iciclewish, a cat who saw Pikestar as a parental figure essentially? The herb patrol this time has basically been Pikestar's family plus himself, there would be no confronting him here it seemed.

The weather wasn't really the best to be doing that in anyways either as small puffs of snow started to dot his pelt and kiss his nose with a chill strong enough to shiver right down the spine. They needed to keep their stocks up though regardless of the weather... Hopefully no cat here caught a chill while they were at it. "If your nose or toes start to numb, we will turn back with whatever we have and return to camp. Do not hesitate to tell me when that starts to occur" He turned his deep blue gaze on each of the patrol members with a stern look, "Frostbite can be deadly, we do not want to have to use any herbs we do find in this weather right away so don't push it, is that clear?" There would be no point in leaf-bare herb patrols if all they ended up causing was even more sick cats after all.

Snuffling around the base of a freshly snow covered tree the medicine cat would eventually tug something out from amidst the piled snow and frost-- He had been hopeful it was a herb buried just below the blanket but it ended up just being a stick... Sticks were still useful of course! But they were never in short supply either. He'd tuck it into his long tail fur, best to keep looking for now. Hopefully the others had found something a bit more useful especially for combating the colder weather.

"Prey is not the only resource of concern in the coming winter months. Although frost has not yet set in, many plants are beginning to die away and wither because of the falling snow and cold winds. It just so happens that this patrol encounters a snow shower while searching for herbs! Do you push on through the snow to help out Jinglemoon, or are you secretly hoping the patrol will turn back as soon as possible due to the inclement weather?"

Kuhli was surprised to be picked for a patrol, but welcomed it nonetheless. Especially when it was one with Jinglemoon, who they enjoyed the company of, and their siblings. Even Iciclewish was a welcome addition, Kuhli had not gotten to know him much, but they still liked the warrior.

The ringed cat didn't know a lot about herbs - they knew the ones twolegs had in their herb gardens, but they didn't know which of those were useful for cats too - they had only recently learned of the overlap. It was interesting how, at their core, twolegs and cats were not that different - they could both benefit from herbs it seemed. The air had grown chilly over the past days, but Kuhli didn't mind, not yet at least, just wishing to be useful.

As they walked, a familiar tree caught their attention - it was an elder and Kuhli remembered seeing twolegs cutting its flowers off the branches, their own caretakers drying them out inside their home. They weren't sure what they used them for, but maybe Jinglemoon knew? Kuhli observed the lowest branches of the tree, but there were no flowers, having already turned into berries and those, in turn, already withered in the cold. Not even the leaves were green anymore, most already turned yellow or orange hues, or even brown and dry, dead. But one small branch still remained within Kuhli's reach with green leaves showing, and they plucked it carefully, holding it gently.

"Hey Jinglemoon...?" they asked, nervously. What if it was foolish? What use would a cat have for these? But they had already spoken up and could not back out now. "Are.. are these any good?"

RIVERCLAN WARRIOR
SPEECH | THOUGHTS | PHYSICAL

PENNED BY PLOT

"Understood," he said, padding along after Jinglemoon. It was odd, to be put on a patrol with not only Kuhli, but also Pikestar... and Jinglemoon seemed to feel a bit awkward about it. Was there something going on between the leader and medicine cat?

While Brook desperately wanted to pry into his brother's personal business, he still had a warrior name to earn. He couldn't very well do that just by gossiping - he had to prove he was able to contribute to the Clan itself!

He'd seen snow before, though usually from the comfort of a Twoleg nest, snuggled up with them on one of the big fluffy pelts they kept around. If it ever got too cold, the cat would wriggle underneath and lay by their housefolk's legs, glad to share the body heat. That warmth would be nice right about now, but somehow, she couldn't see herself giving up this newfound freedom. He'd just have to find someone else to snuggle up with when they got back to camp.

His mouth parted to scent the air, Brook looked around, trying to spot herbs before they got covered by fat flakes of snow. There was one he recognized from his time in the medicine den!

He grabbed a little bundle of the herb and padded back to Jinglemoon.

"Can't recall what this one is, or what it does, but it's definitely useful, yeah?"

I want to be in my nest.

Silver paws thump against the ground as he trails behind everyone. He didn't feel any reassurance with his siblings on this very same patrol, contrary to what Jinglemoon may assume. They may be related by blood, but the cats he considered family were those he shared no blood. Iciclewish, his son was one such cat. Another was Jinglemoon himself, but things were strained between them. He could tell the medicine cat was cross with him. The piercing gaze from those blue eyes spoke volumes. A conversation was due in time between them. When? He was unsure, but it was steadily creeping up on him. He could feel it. For now all that left his friends maw was an order. Acknowledgement comes in a form of a nod.

He drew away from the patrol, seeing no point in searching closely with his siblings or Jinglemoon. He'd just wind up finding the same herbs as the others. Thankfully, the snow hasn't fallen to the point of completely covering their land. It makes finding herbs a little easy, at least he thinks that is what this strange bush, stems sticking out of it akin to reed, and red berries? Atop the stems are. With some care he unsheathes a claw, and begins cutting away some stems with these odd red berries. With a decent little bundle with red berries attached, he returns to Jinglemoon.

"Is this enough? There's still more of... Whatever this is, but I'm not sure if these are useful. If anything the stems could be saved for something else."
he turns his attention to what Brook and Kuhli have found thus far. Not bad. If this is all useful then we've had a pretty successful outing. Then, he whips his head to Iciclewish.
"Have you found anything?"
I can only hope we'll have enough for this Leaf-bare. With kits on the way... We need all that we can find.

Kuhli was the first to speak up and catch his attention after having found something and he'd turn to them curious to see what they might have collected. Ah yes! Elder Leaves! "Very! Well done Kuhli!" Some of his usual peppiness seemed to have returned when faced with his patrol-mates finding some good herbs for the stores despite the weather. These leaves would no doubt see some use though he hoped they wouldn't need to be used anytime soon preferably. Herbs did tend to hit the stock shelves from these patrols and then jump right off them just as quickly though... "Hopefully the colder weather won't shrivel too many of the leaves before we can collect more of them"

Brook then chimed up as well with a little bundle of something he couldn't quite recall the name of, "That one appears to be mallow" He'd smile cheerfully, he knew it could be helpful for bellyaches among other things he didn't quite get how to use it for yet, a valuable herb to have on paw for sure though. He ought to ask his fellow medicine cats at some point soon about which herbs were best to have on hands for any illnesses leafbare would no doubt bring. "Definitely useful! Thank you Brook"

Pikestar was next and though he knew he was on a patrol with all three siblings, it was still a bit amusing that they all found something to bring to him one after the other like they had. He blinks at what the leader brings, tilting his head to one side slightly at the sight of the red berries that were also brought along with it, were they berries? Or perhaps oddly shaped flowers? He'd always wondered a bit about that. Either way he did have some of the leaves in his stores already and knew them to be named "Burnet" Even though he hadn't seen them much with the flowery berry looking part before-- Perhaps because of the season change? "We'll need it for any cat expecting kits, especially during leafbare" He would dip his head to Pikestar in thanks for collecting it as well, still mad at him or not the silver tom's help on this patrol was invaluable and Jinglemoon wasn't one to disrespect that.

"We shouldn't take too much to give it time to grow back more once the weather turns again, but if you can take more without troubling the source plant, well... More is always useful!" He'd head down closer to where the ground grew more damp under paw, blue eyes and dark nose searching for a particular dark green plant. Once he found it his curled ear tips would perk up merrily and he'd gesture with his tail for another cat on the patrol to come over if they had a moment to do so, "Lend me a paw over here if anycat can? We hopefully won't need it but Rush will be helpful for any uh...-" He realized his excitement for having such a herb might not be shared given what it was useful for meant a pretty bad injury had to be sustained first. But then again, if anycat did break a bone at least they'd have it on paw to help, right? "-For any bones that happen to become broken" He'd finish off more sheepishly as he tugged some of its long, narrow leaves out to take back to camp later.

This had been a very successful patrol so far but the snow shower that had started had been relentless and still wasn't giving up. Would their luck run out as more plants became too cold to bare the weather any further?

Kuhli smiles to themselves at Jinglemoon's praise. Perhaps once they're back, they can ask Jinglemoon to show them around the healer's den and teach them a bit about the herbs - so they know what to look out for. Because right now they're just guessing based on their own experience and they have no experience with actual cat medicine. Only the herbs their twolegs had grown.

"Yeah, this weather does seem to... be an issue." Kuhli nods - so many of the plants around them are withered and dried, how is Jinglemoon meant to find anything useful?

They circle around the elder tree, looking for more leaves that might be useful still. But to no awail - none of the other branches have any green left on them, and frankly, Kuhli's own body is starting to shake from the wind a little bit. Perhaps a little shelter under the tree might help... The ringed cat walks beneath the tree, the branches and trunk blocking out the worst of the cold wind, though their pawpads still freeze.

Just a moment, they tell themselves. And then I'll join them again.

But, just so they look like they're doing something instead of resting their beating heart, they observe the elder tree still - the branches from the underside, the bark, the tree sap.... the tree sap? Kuhli takes a closer look at the strange hard liquid oozing out of the bark - could that be somehow useful? Perhaps its sticky nature could be used for wounds or... or something.

"Um.. Jinglemoon?" they cautiously call out to the medicine cat. "Is tree sap any useful? Though... I have no idea how we'd collect it even if it was..."

We will call this place our home

.

Iciclewish followed along quietly, his curious gaze flicking between Kuhli and Brook. Two new members of the Clan and if appearances meant anything, kin to Pikestar as well. Brook especially looked like a mirror of his da', and that alone made Iciclewish's whiskers twitch in quiet wonder. How had he never heard of them before? Had Pikestar simply... Forgotten? The thought didn't feel cruel, not really. After all, Iciclewish was certain he must have had siblings once, too. He just couldn't remember them. Or his real ma and pa.

His ear twitched and he forced himself back to the present, scanning the ground with renewed focus. They were here for herbs, and with leafbare creeping ever closer, he wanted to help however he could. For a heartbeat there was nothing but frost-bitten earth and brittle grass... And then.... Elder leaves. Relief washed through him. Carefully, he padded forward and gathered what he could, only pausing when Pikestar's voice reached him. Iciclewish turned at once, eyes bright.

" Y-yes! " he chirped, unable to keep the excitement from his tone. He lifted the leaves proudly. " I think... I think these are useful? " he meowed, hope and eagerness shining in his baby-blue gaze.

The leader mostly tunes out the praise Jinglemoon gives his siblings, looking down at his haul of berries. A small part of him feels a little bad about the possibility of gathering random berries that may serve no purpose, and that the possibility of the strange bush screaming at him for hacking away at it. Jinglemoon moving in the peripheral of his vision causes him to return his attention to the medicine cat. Said medicine cat gives him the name of what he has picked. "Burnet," he repeats, as if saying the name would give him some kind of clue of what it was used for. Unfortunately his idea of it being used for burns is promptly thrown into the river when Jinglemoon states its true purpose. "For any cat expecting kits, huh?" We definitely need those. Especially for Heatherfield. At Jinglemoon's show of gratitude, he finds himself awkwardly returning the gesture.

He doesn't move. While he has found something useful for the clan, he is unsure if Jinglemoon is done for the day. Seeing as this is the first time on a herb patrol, he is a little clueless on the typical procedure. Before he can ask, the medicine cat goes on about collecting herbs. Oh. I guess we aren't done. Once the advice is given, he goes off further to find something else that catches his eye. As such, he only vaguely hears Jinglemoon's request for help when a big white flower catches his interest. It honestly didn't look like a herb from afar, but the times he was in Jinglemoon's medicine cat den there were some plants that looked like flowers.

Except... When he is close, it becomes apparent to him that this not a big white flower. This flower is actually a bunch of little flowers close enough to one another to give the illusion of being a big flower. Don't take too much. Don't trouble the source plant. However, he finds that he can't tell what exactly is the source or how to safely collect this flower? Whatever it is. Anyhow, he tries his best and only grabs a few, leaving a patch of whatever this was mostly untouched.

When he returned he looked for his son. The white tom was in the middle of rustling through the grass for something. His son returns with leaves, showcasing them proudly. Placing his find down, he can't help but laugh at his child's excitement. He stretches his arm in order to rub his paw against Iciclewish's head. "Don't worry. If Jinglemoon says we can't use them, then I'll use them for my own nest."

Then he tilts his head to Jinglemoon, who found bones (at least he knew something without being told) and another type of plant. "Ohhh, nice haul Jinglemoon. I have... Whatever this is? I tried not to take a lot like you said." Silver paws gently nudge a small bundle of water hemlock towards the medicine cat. I guess if they can't be used I could give them to one of the weavers to make something with? Or maybe have it in my den somewhere? At least I didn't pick that much this time, so it wouldn't be too much of a waste!
