Leafkit started every day reminding himself to stay out of trouble, it was something Serpentberry said often and something he heard other older cats utter often enough that apparently it was just an important rule to follow. Trouble was hard to stay out of though, it was in everything he touched. Every tail nibbled was trouble, every wandering into dens he wasn't supposed to go in was trouble, he couldn't play with the prey pile anymore either - there was trouble in that! Was there trouble over by the apprentice den? Probably, but he was going to check anyways. His tiny mottled head poked around the edge of the den mouth, peering at the many nests there empty except for one where he spotted the brown striped pelt of Bearpaw neatly fixing the bedding back into shape. He understood that struggle, he was always messing up the nest he shared with his siblings cause he kicked in his sleep a lot and his claws were small but sharp so mama had to replace it after a while.

Leafkit waddles in, tail raised and every little pawstep reeking with unwarranted confidence in his decision to just enter the den without asking.
His voice drops conspiratorially, whispering in the too loud way a kitten might with his voice still at normal volume but strained and airy, "What's a bear 'nyways?" He'd never seen whatever it was Bearpaw was named after, but everyone was named after something that was real, least what he could tell. Mama was a snake and a berry, Thunderflash was a big noise and a bright light during a storm. Ghoststrike was a...well, ghosts were real. They had to be. Cause his mama talked to them sometimes and Rowanpaw was learning to talk to them too! So whatever a bear was, it was real and he wanted to know.

Alone within the apprentice's den sat Bearpaw, fussing over his bedding with his nose scrunched in concentration. It was a mystery to him how his little nest always ended up tousled the next morning. He didn't move around in his sleep too much, did he? Hopefully not, the last thing he wanted was to be an unpleasant denmate.

At least he got a temporary respite from all of his apprentice duties. Though he sprung out of bed each morning with relative ease, ready to (hopefully) impress Honeysucklecry, the quiet peace of being left to himself was something he cherished. His siblings were nowhere to be found too, sparing him for a moment from Brokenkit's constant complaints.

That was until Bearpaw's ears pricked as he discovered his solitude was interrupted by a curious young kit. Leafkit was his name, if he remembered right. He occasionally spotted the little one when he went to check on Brokenkit in the nursery. Leafkit seemed friendly, that was for sure. Sometimes, he wished Brokenkit could follow that example...

Bearpaw's concentrated expression softened once Leafkit spoke, and he decided to leave his nest organizing alone to focus on the young cat.

"Well, hey there, what're ya doin', wanderin' all by yer lonesome?" Bearpaw asked while stepping forward, a small chuckle escaping his jaw. He brushed that thought aside with a shake of his head just as fast as he asked it. Kits were naturally curious, he'd discovered, and he doubted Leafkit would let up until he answered his question.

"A bear is-" he paused, poking his head from the den to see if he could flag down someone older and wiser. How ironic that he wasn't even sure of his own namesake, though he had an excuse as he'd never seen one. He hoped his confused expression could summon someone fast before Leafkit pelted him with more inquiries. Maybe he could spot where Serpentberry was so she could swoop in and gather her curious kitten. "Well, uh… I- I think bear's are, like…"

Brightpetal was older, but perhaps not wiser. His brain always seemed selective on what it would remember and wouldn't, even as every fact about stars and his clanmates seemed to swirl about at a moment's notice, there was little he believed he could recall about things that he didn't see daily. Large predators, by the grace of StarClan, were not creatures he saw daily. It was that reason alone that made the red tabby pause as he overheard a kitten whispering loudly, his ears almost burning in shame as if he'd heard something he wasn't supposed to. He'd only been meaning to grab Flamepaw, now it appeared he was involved in a different conversation.

He hadn't seen a bear, neither had Bearpaw if he judged by the panic in his eyes as he stared out into camp. Still, his parent's stories had been vivid and wild, perhaps exaggerated in some aspects and yet he had no reason to disbelieve them. As he recalled one about a bear in a big blue den (he didn't know why the den had been blue), Brightpetal cleared his throat hoping to grab the attention of the tabby. He grinned wildly as he approached, his own whisper coming out as a snake-like hiss as he tried to speak through his teeth. "Giant brown animals with short ears and long claws, proper scary. They're as huge as monsters," he told the other, presuming both Bear and Leaf would appreciate it if the knowledge came from someone named after the dangerous creatures.

Perhaps someone could've seen it from pawful of fox-lengths away - the union of apprentices to their mentors. Serpentberry would hedge a guess that in some seasons, the cats would hardly understand how they operated prior. Kits were sort of just... hoisted onto the world and expected to learn somehow. Now they had a sense of organization and responsibility - for if an apprentice slacks, it affects more than that one cat. Especially in leafbare, the Clan feels the aching failure of untrained apprentices and unhelpful maws.

She expects that Brightpetal finds the apprentice den to snatch his apprentice for some sort of training - but he hovers, instead, his maw moving in a similar manner to how she speaks. Her eyes narrow and as she looks to who he is talking to, she finds one of her sons. Oh... Brightpetal...! Her tail slaps the ground as she stands, determined to catch the deputy making a mockery of her. Instead, upon arrival, she hears the discussion of... bears. She isn't sure why Brightpetal decided such a a stance to describe bears, but that's a different topic, she thinks.

"Think of it this way," she adds (only to be yet another cat who has not seen a bear before,) "Foxes? Badgers? We cats can scare them off if there are enough of us. Bears? One swipe, and you'll be just tufts of fur on the breeze." She doesn't intend to strike fear into her child, but instead understanding. The world is scary, but she will not shelter him from it.

In all nine moons of Grizzlypaw's life, he can confidently say he has not once interacted or even caught glimpse of the namesake he and his littermate shared. A bear in his mind was some sort of daunting creature, given the added feature of his own name they were rather wild looking and when he was particularly lazy about his grooming he wondered if he shared any resemblance.

He wasn't expecting to hear anything like being as big as monsters, though. That sounded impossible! What could be the size of a monster other than... a monster! "Do they sound like monsters, too?" Grizzlypaw asked with wide eyes in wonder. Serpentberry made another addition that struck him with a mighty shudder.

"HUH?!" Now they have to be making this up! Maybe to scare them, as the elders stories of their youth often did. "That can't be real... I wouldn't be able to do all that." Grizzlypaw glanced sideways to his brother nervously. What were their parents thinking?
