Blacktree and Dunehusk hadn't ever "officially" adopted Amethystkit, but Grayflight still viewed himself as the young cat's uncle. Blacktree, no doubt, cared for the kit as if he were any other in the nursery, perhaps a little more, but her pain over Pine no doubt prevented her from truly accepting another child when the cat arrived.

Grayflight, however, viewed Amethystkit as nothing but a blessing, and through the moons of the kit's young life, he'd always ensured to save a few of the more sparkly trinkets or tasty treats for his adoptive nephew. And now, Amethystkit was nearly at apprenticing age, and he couldn't believe the young kit had grown so fast.

"Morning," he mewed, padding into the nursery. He dropped the mouse in front of his sister, who tucked in gratefully, and then looked to Amethystkit.

"Amethyst," he said, smiling. "Wanna come pick a trinket?" He'd brought back a small pile, which waited just outside the nursery.

Despite what Grayflight thought, Amethystkit felt loved, surrounded by his family, whether adoptive or blood-related didn't matter to the young tom. Most of the time, he felt warm and safe, tucked in the nursery against Blacktree's body. Despite being almost apprentice aged, he still enjoyed his momma's warmth against his body.

Amethystkit raised his head as a shadow fell over the nursery's entrance only to be met with his uncle's kind face. "Hi Grayflight!" the kitten bounced up to his paws, ready to touch his nose against the other's shoulder.

"Trinket?" the kitten jumped around at the suggestion. "Yeah!"

He wasn't really into keeping things, but shiny trinkets still intrigued him, especially if they were gifts. On bouncy paws, Amethystkit followed Grayflight outside the nursery, only blinking at Blacktree to let her know that he's going out with his uncle.

"I'll watch over him," he assured his sister, before padding out with the kit just behind him. As promised, just outside the nursery he'd selected a few trinkets and laid them out for the kit to pick from. The shiny stick from Twolegplace was firmly staked in the ground by his nest, and it was far too large for Amethystkit to reasonably drag around, and the skull had seemed too macabre for the start to a potential collection. No, Amethystkit needed something smaller, something safer, and something more befitting of him than most of the Twoleg scrap he'd found lately.

His first offering was a little rock, not as sparkly as the ones he found with Stoatstream, with a bit of a golden band around the purple rock. [OOC: costume jewelry - made of plastic]

The second was another twoleg twig, this one wooden, with a chewy pink end and a darker sharpened one. The sharp bit was dull enough that it should pose no danger to the kit. [OOC: a wooden pencil]

Third, a large shiny Twoleg leaf, colorful on one side and silver on the other, with little crumbs of fat and salt still remaining. [OOC: a torn open potato chip bag]

And lastly, a circular vine made of Twoleg pelt, all bundled together. When he tugged at one end, it stretched a bit before returning to its former state, and though the Twoleg pelt was dirty, it was clear that at one point it must have been quite colorful. [OOC: a hair scrunchie]

"Well?" he asked brightly, waving his tail to the assortment. "Take whichever you like!"

Amethystkit follow Grayflight out of the nursery where several treasuers lay spread for him to choose from. The kitten's eyes grew wide with wonder. "I can choose any of these?"

How was he even meant to pick, when each one was different from the other, different shapes and colours and textures? "Can I try them before picking?" Amethystkit asked and was met with a nod. And so he sat down next to the trinkets and went one by one.

First, he tried the strange looking rock - it glistened and glinted in the sunlight as Amethystkit rolled it in his paws, the color reminding him of his own eyes - but then the sun reflected at such an angle that the light went straight into his face and Amethystkit shut his eyes quickly. "Ow!" the kitten only opened his eyes as he put the rock back. "Not this one I don't think."

Next there was a strange colorful stick. It was interesting, for sure, and Amethystkit did the only natural thing one does with a stick - he bit into it. It crunched nicely under his teeth, making a satisfying sound. But then the bits hit his tongue and he had to stick it out. "Oh, no." the kitten spat the wooden bits out. "It tastes real bad!"

Third time's the charm? The young cat licked the shiny leaf and then licked his lips in satisfaction - that taste was awesome. The crinkly sound the leaf made when touched was a bit too much, but Amethystkit could live with that. "Maybeeeee." he stretched out the word in thought. "Let's see what the last one is."

Amethystkit wasn't sure how to describe this last piece of treasure - it looked kind of like a flower and kind of like strange ivy. He grabbed it with his paw and pulled on it with his teeth - it streched and streched until he let go and then it returned! Amethystkit jumped in excitement. "How fun!" he exclaimed. "This one! I want this one!"

"Any of them," he mewed fondly, wrapping his long tail around his paws as he sat. "And of course you can try 'em! Just be careful, okay kiddo?"

He watched fondly as Amethystkit tested each of the trinkets in turn, finding something wrong or less enticing about each as he went along. He was beginning to fear that the kit would determine none of the items to be a suitable gift, and his paws kneaded the ground anxiously behind the fur of his tail. Crooked whiskers twitched as Amethystkit fiddled with the last item, Grayflight's secret top choice for the boy, and he let out a delighted laugh as the kit jumped about in excitement.

"Excellent pick!" he mewed proudly, stooping to press his nose to Amethystkit's forehead. "That one's all yours." He swept the others into a pile - he'd take care of it later - and tilted his head.

"If you'd like, I can take you out of camp, maybe help you find some more trinkets," he offered. "Whenever you want." It was hard to believe that he was nearly an apprentice, soon to be tossed out into the greater expanse of the territory. Maybe thieving would be something he'd take to?

"Thank you uncle Grayflight!" Amethystkit dipped his head happily before showing his teeth in a smile at the tom. "Let me just run to put this back into my nest and we can go?"

Amethystkit didn't want to wait to go out if Grayflight was offering. "Perhaps you could teach me some hunting basics as well?" he asked with a small pleading voice, aware of how difficult it was to find prey these days and if he could do anything to help, he would certainly try. "Most of the other kittens don't need milk anymore but real food now... there's not enough for most of them."

Then excitement took over. "Where would we go? What is out there?" he bounced up and down. "Will you show me some cool stuff?" Amethystkit barely breathed as he asked his questions, way too excited for an expedition outside. He has never been outside, not that he remembered at least. Soon he would be an apprentice, sure, but getting out a few days earlier under supervision would definitely not hurt!

He nodded in response to the kit's query, and waited outside for him to return from placing his treasure in a safe spot. As they padded out together, Grayflight sighed at the mention of the hunger the other kits were facing. For Amethystkit to be so aware of that... it was nothing but a chill reminder of previous hard times.

"Of course I can give you some hunting tips," he mewed. "I may not be the best at it, but it's good that you want to know." His mood lightened at the kit's stream of questions, and he processed them each in turn as they walked.

"Well, I figured we won't go too terribly far," he said. "Given that this is pretty spur of the moment! But there's plenty out there in the pocosin - marshes and mud and trees and ponds... one day when you're an apprentice your mentor will take you to see all of it! There's even a Thunderpath, which you will need to be very careful of, but it's all the way at the edge of the territory."

He stepped over a twig, stretching out his back legs, and smiled.

"I'll do my best to show you some cool stuff." There wouldn't be prey nearby, but he could certainly do some practice using a stone or something.

"Alright, wanna learn how to catch a frog, first?"

"Thank you, thank you, thank you!" Amethystkit jumped up and down in excitement around Grayflight. "I can't wait to have a mentor and bring back loads of prey."

Even if they wouldn't go too far and wouldn't catch any prey, Amethystkit was still eager to learn the basics from his uncle. Grayflight spoke of marshes and trees and ponds and Amethystkit couldn't wait to discover it all. While it was tough growing up by himself, feeling the need to connect with peers he did not have, Amethystkit at least had Grayflight and Blacktree.

"A frog?" the boy echoed. "Of course!" Though their skin was often regarded as strange, Amethystkit actually enjoyed the taste of the creature, oftentimes even preferred it over the taste of rodents. And if he learned now, surely his future mentor would be impressed with him.

On quick paws, the young tortoiseshell hurried towards the camp entrance, unable to wait any longer, "Come on!" he giggled at Grayflight. "I'll have to tell Blacktree all about this once we're back."

He loved the young cat's enthusiasm, and he laughed as they exited camp and headed into the pocosin. Grayflight looked around, spotting a patch of cattails and reeds not too far from camp, and he flicked his tail over Amethystkit's shoulder.

"I'm gonna go put a stone in there, 'kay? Then I'll show you the pounce and you can try it yourself!" He smiled at the kit, selecting a good sized pebble and nesting it amongst the reeds. If he used his imagination, it could totally look like a frog!

"Okay, you watching, Amethystkit?"

The moment Amethystkit's foot stepped out of the camp, it felt like something had changed. It had crossed the imaginary border separating it from being a kitten and an apprentice. While not officially one yet, Amethystkit now knew it was coming very soon and he was ready.

Following Grayflight was easy enough and the dark furred kitten had time to look around at the tall trees around himself - it was one thing to look at them through the camp's entrance and completely another to be able to approach them and touch their bark. And completely new to be able to touch the reeds and wet ground.

Only after Grayflight stared at Amethystkit for a moment too long did he realise the he had been asked a question. "O..oh yes! I'm watching!" The kitten sat down, focusing hard to look at his uncle and letting nothing else distract him.

Grayflight chuckled at his nephew, whisking his tail along the ground.

"It's a lot to take in," he mewed. "Sorry about that." He took a few steps away from the stone and crouched slowly and deliberately, showing off each way his limbs moved. His fur smoothed, and he scented the air before moving quietly forward.

"ShadowClan cats, especially thieves like me, are often really quiet, especially when they hunt," he whispered. After a quick pause, he lept, his paws landing on the stone firmly.

If only it were that easy to catch prey as of late, he thought bitterly.

"Alright," he meowed. "Wanna give it a go?"

Amethystkit tried to remember every detail of Grayflight's stance, from the way his paws moved to the way he held his shoulders and swayed his tail. There was a lot and the young tortoiseshell wasn't sure which parts to focus on, but he did his best to remember them all.

The small cat watched his uncle focus on the stone and leap, catching the 'prey' flawlessly. It seemed easy enough, it wasn't like Amethystkit had no practice stalking and pouncing on unsuspecting twigs or leaves, but there was another issue, one that Grayflight had mentioned. Being quiet. He didn't know how to achieve that.

Nonetheless, Amethystkit nodded and attempted to mimic Grayflight's movement, placing his paws deliberetly on the forest floor. When he put all his weight on his pawpads, the small cat realised, a lot of the noise got muffled. Slowly he stalked towards the stone, until the distance between its smooth surface and his own body seemed managable enough to cover in one leap. He focused, just like he saw his uncle focus moments before, and leapt. Dirt flew from beneath his claws as he moved and he landed squarely on his target.

"Got it!" he smiled. "Though... I'm not sure my leap was quiet enough not to scare the stone, were it actually alive."
