"Tch– whatever! There's no way you saw a bird that big across the river." he snorted in disbelief, the words perhaps softened by the amused glint in his aqua eyes as he glared back at the other apprentice. A bird the size of a dog? Yeah, right. "Thunderclan would be begging to set up camp over here if they were being hunted by packs of giant ground-birds"
It wasn't often than the clans apprentices just went off to do their own thing, but Sharkpaw had never been a fan of constant adult supervision. And until someone forbid him from doing so– and maybe not even then, honestly[/i]-- he'd continue to live life as he saw fit. Today, that meant visiting the river with some of his peers to hang out and enjoy the water while they still could. The days were cooler more often than not at this time of year, and he wanted to make the most of this rare, sunny day.
The group was just rounding a bend when they collectively caught sight of it.
A log. Wide and floating along the rivers surface, had caught inters in a calmer stretch of the water near the bank. It looked huge and heavy– not quite waterlogged enough to sink, but likely to roll if you didn't watch your footing.
"Bet you can't make it without falling in." someone grinned beside him.
"Bet you lunch I can." he replied, not missing a beat.
Shark loved a good challenge. Not just because he liked to show off, but because he expected great things of himself and couldn't achieve them by standing still. To be the best you had to do the best, and he was more than willing to put in the work.
Besides. All these pointless little challenges were just preparing him for the ones that would inevitably matter.
With no hesitation, he backed up a few strides, broke into a sprint, and then leapt-- legs tight, form clean. His paws hit the log dead center and for a heartbeat, it looked like he had it.
And then, the entire thing lurched to the side, rolling hard under his weight. He scrambl3ed for purchase, claws dragging deep into slick bark, and then– SPLASH!
One loud, undignified plunge into the chilly water below.
What finesse he lacked at the end of his jump was made up for as he swam beneath the now-righted log and turned back toward the riverbank. When he surfaced a moment later, he made sure to scowl enough to hide the twitch at the corner of his mouth.
"Whatever– lunch is on me today, I guess." he said, flipping onto his back to kick water at the cats still on shore. "Doubt you can do much better, though." he challenged, letting the smirk bleed through as he he attempted to goad the others into trying their luck in making the jump.

OOC: Hello! Feel free to be the apprentice who made the bet with him- you can consider this my RTA with Sharkpaw! He's technically been here the entire time so feel free to know him as the borderline cocky, stand-offish, super loyal friend of Torrentpaw :)
