— before she slammed back to earth, body and soul colliding in a head-splitting fervor: reincarnated, revitalized through the ethereal power bestowed upon her not even a season before. Hawkstar let out a burning cough (thorns scraped at the back of her throat, an awful sensation of tearing, searing pain flashing against her vocal cords before fading - quick as a wink) and sat up shakily, her head still reeling from the eternal.

The wound she had suffered not a lifetime few moments before panged in a dull, pulsing ache, each less painful than the last until it nothing but muscle memory, a phantom pain of the flesh that would pass with time. Still, she shuddered, feeling distinctly unwhole and unfocused now that the soul and flesh had been reconnected. Nine times, would she feel that, nine times for the good of her clan... it was just enough to make her ill at the very thought.

Electric blue snapped to blue, then green, and amber and back again, counting, tallying. "Where -" another hacking cough, "Where is Ponypaw?"

The last thing Snowveil expected upon her return was the scent of blood... Hawkstar's blood. Batwing's worried cries pierced the thick fog, shattering her thoughts. The grumbling she'd prepared for the apprentices' recklessness vanished as dread gripped her chest. Hawkstar. Her paws carried her forward, nearly tripping over themselves in her haste as she pushed her nose into the familiar fur. The tang of blood clung heavily to her senses, making her stomach churn.

Had the fox done this? But the sounds of battle were gone now, the place eerily quiet save for the hammering of her heart.

" Hawkstar! " she called, voice tight with fear and determination. Her whiskers twitched as she brushed them against her face, her relief surging when she stirred. She was alive. Thank the stars above, she was alive.

When she groggily asked about Ponypaw, Snowveil felt her breath hitch. A quick rasp of her tongue swept over her ear before she turned her head toward the direction she'd come from. " She's safe. " Snowveil reassured softly, though her voice carried firm conviction. " Fell through the ice, but Sagesong saved her. Two apprentices went after her. Reckless, but I gave them a good talking-to. "

Her gaze returned to Hawkstar, her tone softening with quiet admiration. " And you... you chased away that brutish fiend. I'm glad. " she murmured, the relief clear in her voice. Yet, more than anything, it was Hawkstar's survival she was most thankful for. The thought of losing her... no, she couldn't bear it. " But don't EVER do something so mouse-brained again! Mouse dung, Hawkstar! I leave for just a moment and you decide to toss a life away to a *fox*? " she muttered out softly, more so for Hawkstar to hear than for the whole group of cats to enjoy. Though her voice was brisk, Hawkstar would probably know her well enough to know it was the fear speaking.

DON'T LET MY CALM FOOL YOU
there's fire underneath this snow

How useless he felt through it all. Every second that passed with blood still oozing from the leaders wounds was another second Fujimoto had stood, frozen in place, cowardly. He watched Tigerfoot and Swallowpaw work in tandem before leaving StarClan's will to do the rest. Despite the distance placed between the ravine, their touch still kissed the earth Hawkstar walked on. She would mend and rise once again, and move on as though her heart had stilled at all.

"Oh, there she goes." Fujimoto muttered with a wry smile as Snowveil descended upon Hawkstar like a mother to its kit. He looked around to meet the eyes of anyone else around, desperate to look like he wasn't amused. "I-I heard the fox hasn't appeared again, by the way." If it was any reassurance. Hopefully it wandered back into the fog and would never find them again.

(˗ˏˋ ★ ˎˊ˗) he has remained at his mother's side through it all, watching every cobweb and herb that the medicine cats carefully place onto her wounds, then laying next to her, nose resting by her flank until breath once more seeps into her lungs. when life once again returns to the scarred woman's body, starlitpath hauls himself to his paws, feeling the leader shudder with adrenaline beneath him. he longs to plunge his body into her fur, wrap her tail around his flank and breathe in her scent, which replaces the smell of death so quickly. "mama," he murmurs instead, ears flattening, eyes wide. craning his neck, he reaches forward and touches his nose to her cheek. snowveil hobbles up, brushes her whiskers against the leader, and the young warrior steps back, allowing his mother's former mentor to chastise her. fujimoto mutters an amused statement and the dappled point will meet his gaze. "as normal," he quips, humor returning to him now that his mother has.

"that fox is a long ways away - i chased it over the ridge. it won't be returning in a hurry." confirming the warrior's thoughts, the dappled feline turns back to hawkstar. "are you..." they begin, and pause, licking rubbery lips. "you're okay, right?" it's almost kittish, the way they speak, as if begging for reassurance. did you see starclan? they want to ask, but refrain. her mother is down to eight lives in only a moon or so of leadership. fear creeps up the feline's spine like a spider, and she flicks her tail to brush it away.

stir, the body does— divine justice breathes life into their king for the first time (one down, will she be present for them all?). hawkstar begins to wake up, and swallowpaw steps back from the mess of cobwebs and poultice to give her space. her tail-tip flicks nervously, watching snowveil and starlitpath welcome her back, then turns her focus on fujimoto's voice.

"i think that's the last we'll, um, see of the fox." she chimes in afterwards, bundling up the unused herbs before she forgets. "but i think it's um, bad to, y'know. linger..." her voice trails off, eyes flicking across the group, making sure they had everyone.

MILKHEART, He/Him / 29 moons / Skyclan Caregiver
Seal Sepia tom with high white, has scruffy tipped ears, a long fluffy cream-white tail and amber-caramel eyes
Former mate of DUCHESS, Father of CREAMKIT and two others
Radiates Dad Energytm, good with kits, warm and amicable (totally doesn't look like a hot chocolate, except he does)

Milkheart's immediate instinct upon the scent and callout of a fox attack was to go straight to protecting the grouping of queens, kits and apprentices— they were the most vulnerable or inexperienced and would be easier pickings for that red hunter or anything else lurking in the shadows if nobody was in the way. Thankfully Milkheart was not alone in doing so but he knew some others further in front would be fending the fox off as well— he could hear them in the distance.

Milkheart took a quick count of the young ones he was taking watch over alongside other fellow warriors and noticed that four weren't accounted for. Downykit, Ponypaw, Teaselpaw and Spikepaw! While he had faith in his clanmates to fend off the fox and make sure that those four were safe it still worried him greatly. Once he heard that the fox was sent yipping away like the loathsome thing that it was, Milkheart vigilantly stood his ground until he could hear the voices of those that were up in front before guiding those behind him alongside other protectors.

"Hey, is everyone okay?!" Milkheart called out, worried yet determined to make sure everyone was in fact okay. He heard Snowveil explain where Ponypaw had gone, so that must've meant that Teaselpaw and Spikepaw had gone off to save her. Though the youths meant well it was also so exceedingly foolish! "That explains where Teaselpaw and Spikepaw went..." Milkheart's nose crinkled slightly, though he was glad that they were safe thanks to Sagesong and Snowveil those youngsters would need even more of a stern talking to.

Something else was off though, it was something about Hawkstar. While Milkheart wasn't there to see it, all of the clues were there in front of him. He looked to Hawkstar with a mixture of dread and concern over what he thought had happened— the idea that she had lost a life so quickly after gaining the strength of nine. It was all but confirmed, Milkheart didn't need to hear what Snowveil said to Hawkstar to see the emotion in her face. Starlitpath kept herself together, but her tone towards her mother Hawkstar said it all— Milkheart knew well enough what this was, the emotion that permeated the group.

Fear. It was fear.

Though it was within fear that one could be brave. Skyclan still had to keep going. In agreement with Swallowpaw, Milkheart began another headcount. "Let's make sure everyone is here." He said, as unease caused his fur to bristle in the way that it did when bad weather was on the horizon... Yet more trials, but little did he know just how bad it would soon get...

I tell you what— you better not be bringing bad vibes,
Leave your troubles behind, then I'll be alright

CHERRY OF SKYCLAN

Cherry paced anxiously, her gaze flitting toward Hawkstar's unmoving body. Her heart twisted with worry. She had already watched Coffeestar pass, her final life claimed by the claws of fate. But Hawkstar... Hawkstar had lives to spare, didn't she? Eight, if Cherry's memory served her right. That thought kept her clinging to hope, desperate for the assurance that their leader would rise again.

Her thoughts spiraled as the tension built, only to be shattered by a sudden jolt of movement. Startled, Cherry jumped, her fur bristling before realization dawned. Her wide eyes softened, relief flooding her features. " Y-you're back...! " she squeaked, her voice trembling with emotion. She blinked rapidly, her gaze darting between Hawkstar and the others as relief turned to a cautious hope.

But the moment of respite was fleeting. The fox was gone, yes, but it could return. No one wanted to relive the chaos it had unleashed, and Cherry knew Swallowpaw was right. Lingering here served no purpose.

" Then... uhm... " she faltered, her voice uncertain as her own exhaustion weighed heavily on her. Every bruise and ache pulsed in protest, and she flinched as a sharp pang shot through her shoulder. Her wide eyes scanned the group, worry etched into every feature.

Ponypaw was soaked to the bone, the icy water still clinging to her pelt. Hawkstar's injuries were no small matter, either. They needed to rest. They all did. But Cherry couldn't shake the gnawing thought... Could they afford the luxury? The journey ahead was long, and danger lurked in every shadow.

Her paws shifted uneasily as she swallowed hard, looking at her battered companions. " What... what should we do now? " she asked softly, though the answer already pressed heavily in her heart. They would have to move forward. They always did. But at what cost?

TEASELPAW

Over hill, over dale, through the valley and vale do not weep, do not wail, I am coming home to you

Teaselpaw's heart raced as they crept forward cautiously, peeking from behind one of the warriors. They were torn between the fear of being caught by their mother or earning another scolding from Snowveil. Their wide, owlish eyes were fixed on Hawkstar's previously motionless body, their ears pinned back with worry. This meant... the fox had won, hadn't it? Hawkstar had been brought down by the beast.

A soft, fearful noise escaped them as their gaze shifted to their surroundings. The ache in their paws begged for rest, but they knew Swallowpaw was right, there was no time to linger. They had to keep moving, to get away before the fox returned and caused more harm. More blood spilled. More lives lost.

A shudder rippled through Teaselpaw's small frame as they pressed themselves closer to the ground, their thoughts racing. Was everyone okay? Wolfstorm looked like he was barely holding together. Cherry... Had she been hurt too? And the others?

Their dual-coloured eyes flicked to the snow-dappled ground, the stark sight of crimson staining the icy white sending a chill deeper than the winter air could manage. It was too much... Too many questions and too much uncertainty. The blood stained the white and the white chilled them to the bone and--

Breath hitching in their throat, Teaselpaw let out a small, fearful sound. They flattened themselves further against the cold ground, willing their trembling body to still.

But they couldn't stay frozen like this.

They had to move on.
