Cozy

The young cat hurled her entire body at the mouse, grabbing it with fangs and claws. She held her breath, expecting the mouse to slip away like the others before it, but it did not. Cozy was so relieved that she could cry.

Most of the time she remained hungry after hunting alone. She was terribly cold at night when she slept alone. It was a terrible thing to live alone. She didn't even have the energy anymore to groom the growing mats in her long fur. Who was going to see her? What would be the point?

Cozy desperately wanted to go home, but then everyone would see her as a failure, unable to survive in the wild by herself. She was so confident that she'd prove them wrong… But time dragged on when you're trying to ration food. Shaken by adrenaline, she opened her paws to see her catch mangled but thankfully not moving. Laying on the ground, her large tail bounced happily behind her. Now she had food for a few days.

Then she heard it, a sound, not a small sound of something little either. Cozy sprung to her paws, her long cream fur bristling up, as she stood protectively over her food. Trees hid predators of all kinds, like foxes, bears, and all sorts of spooky things that could certainly make her their lunch and her mouse their snack.

"Go away! Go away right now I'm not joking." She hisses at the unfamiliar forest around her, legs shaking uncontrollably. Harshly her stomach rumbled, so she stood her ground. If push came to shove, she'd have no choice but to run. Quickly she sunk her teeth in the mouse and took a bite.

You walk along the edge of danger
AND IT WILL CHANGE YOU

Copperstorm stepped silently from the undergrowth, his golden eyes catching the faint light as they locked onto the small figure crouched over her meal. His gaze narrowed, not in malice, but with growing concern as he took in her sharp ribs, the way she devoured the prey like she hadn't eaten in days. And yet despite her hunger she still had the spirit to hiss at him. She was starving. And still she had fire. That, he respected. But it begged the question: Where was her family? Briefly, his thoughts flicked to Fogsight. Could she be one of the tom's kits? No… No, that didn't track. Fogsight treated the kit he had with such love, he didn't seem the type to save one kit and abandon another. So then... Who was this child?

His voice, when it came, was low and steady. Gruff, but not unkind. " I'm afraid I have no intention of leaving, kit. " He let the words settle for a moment, not moving any closer. His head tilted slightly, a faint frown forming. " Eat easy, lest you want to give yourself a stomach ache... I'm not here to take your prey. You caught it yourself, fair and square, from what I saw. " With a slow, deliberate motion, he sat down, giving her space but not looking away. She was so small. Scrawny. A scrap of a thing… but alive. And alone.

" Where's your mother? " he asked gently, the question a quiet thread of concern beneath the deeper tones of his voice.

The threat is not what she expected, but it is nonetheless terrible, with dark fur and bright yellow eyes lurking just a short distance away. Instead of going away, he made it apparent that he was not going anywhere. Cozy maintained a steady gaze, flicking her tail back and forth as she tore away.

The visitor didn't resemble most loners; he was too tall, too bulky, and too quiet. If they aren't here for food, there is no other purpose for their presence. It was unusual, suspicious, and unplanned. She gradually stopped picking at the mouse and raised her head to look at him with growing frustration.

She questioned whether she'd truly lost her mind by making someone to talk to, or if death had finally arrived for her. Some say that when you pass, dead cats lead the way. "Why are you here, then? I'm not dead. If that's why you're here, you can leave." She needed to survive and rejoin her family. Even if the idea of giving up was tempting.

The enormous black tom asks about her mother's whereabouts, as if reading her mind. Well if he is here, she most certainly is not dead. Finally some good news. "At home. Far from here." she answered vaguely with a growl in case he was looking for her. "How did you find me? I'm not causing any trouble. I'm becoming stronger." Her limbs kept her stuck standing there, unwilling to fit the confidence in her words.

I WONT SMILE, BUT I'LL SHOW YOU MY TEETH

___________________________________________________________________

He'd seen this before.

Not this exact kit, not this exact place– but everything else? It could have been pulled straight from a memory. A scene from his past repeated too many times to count, half-buried in the rotting mulch of his mind like carrion. Memories he didn't like to recall, but felt stirring in the face of wild, distrustful eyes. Trying to play tough with bristled fur as she hunkered over her kill with the desperation of someone not use to keeping what they caught– or catching it at all.

"You're not dead." he agreed, stepping from the brush on much quieter paws to join Copperstorm and giving a subtle flick of his tail toward his apprentice to ensure they didn't rush the other in excitement or misplaced aggression. "And we found you because that's what Thunderclan warriors are trained to do."

Something any cat could do, if they practiced. Though it was clear from her actions and what she was saying that nobody had ever taken the time to pass down the skills. Some basic tracking work would have clued her in to the fact that she was at the border of another cats territory. She was old enough to be learning, from the looks of it– but still young enough that someone should have an eye on her.

He glanced to Copperstorm, wondering if he'd picked up on it as well.

"You said your family's far." came his rumbling voice again, tone even. "Why aren't you with them, then? Must be missing you by now, surely?"

Others had told him he had a soft spot for young cats. They said he always went easy on them in training and spoke to them with (barely) more sweetness than grown cats. Owlbark himself didn't feel softer to younger cats. He saw them as moldable minds that had to be taught how to see the world, and he chose to try and reduce the cruelty of it all however he could. He couldn't stop it, but he could soften the blow. In that way, maybe he was soft of younger cats.

The deputy scented his warriors nearby, seemingly not moving. His life was all about duties now, and making sure no one died was one of them. Coppersight and Ghoststrike were strong warriors and valuable Storm Guards. He had no real worry they were in danger, but it was best to ensure no trouble was brewing. A small, weak scent drifted to him with theirs. Insteresting.

The tom moved through the brush to see the scene playing out. A scrawny young cat crouched over a piece of prey, and two large toms investigating. He pushed aside the thought that he had been in this stranger's paws before - small and scared and hungry. Owlbark knew that wasn't important now. "Who is this?" he huffed, not even addressing the young she-cat.

Like the others, the dilute tortoiseshell finds herself drawn in by the unfamiliar smell on their territory. Magnoliapeak thinks poorly of allowing intruders to help themselves to ThunderClan prey. Their borders are well-marked. But she supposes that Copperflame supersedes her authority, and there is nothing of substance to be gained from running some emaciated loner off the territory as opposed to another clan cat. Her own hunt has been unsuccessful though, and for that she does feel a bit of bitterness lingering in her mind.

There's no questioning to be had when Magnoliapeak trails after Owlbark, dwelling in the shadow of ThunderClan's houndish deputy. But unlike the hound, her eyes trail down her nose to take in the pitiful she-cat. Apprentice-aged, she thinks. Fortunate to not be chasing prey on their territory or otherwise encountering her own apprentice, Magnoliapeak thinks dryly. Though no words come, she finds a scoff escaping her muzzle at the sharp words the young apricot-furred cat brings. Trying to ward off cats like Copperflame and Ghoststrike with word of getting stronger when she stands like a baby deer before all of them. She waits for an answer, or for this stranger to otherwise start a fight she cannot win.

Cats started to come out of the woodwork with questions, some for her and others not, but all with lingering stares like she wasn't supposed to be there. The dark one with the white face and haunted eyes spills just as many questions as answers. Bringing her back from her qualm of thoughts, "ThunderClan warriors?" Cozy mimics her distrusting attitude sifted into a curious one. The term was a strange name to call oneself, but with no teeth or claws bared, Cozy honestly didn't care about what the name meant.

"Maybe… but I'm old enough to be traveling by myself now. Where are you migrating to?" Maybe toward a place where prey is easier to catch. Better yet, maybe she could follow them. The mouse she wolfed down was sitting heavy on her stomach as if to spite her after the brown tom's warning. Even so, she craved more. More food, more attention, sharing words—it surprised her how much she missed talking. She'd definitely lost her mind in the solitude.

"My name is Cozy." She introduces grumbling; at least the tom with the scar on his face spoke, but the silver one with the white spots unnervingly said nothing. Now that she started spilling her thoughts, words just kept coming out.

"Is this a good hunting spot, or is there a better place nearby? It's like the squirrels around here knew I was after them before I could even do anything." All of the small critters out and about tended to avoid her advances. Not that she was dwelling on her lack of skills, she'd just have to wait for good fortune to come her way.
