When does the reason become the blame?

Fawnkit raised her tiny nose and sniffed the air - it was wet, like damp leaves and soggy ground, reminding her of mornings right after it had rained. She poked her head out of the nursery and confirmed her conjecture. The overgrowth had a darker hue, indicating how filled with water the moss and lichen is, and the ground reflected the dawn sunlight in freshly formed puddles.

Fawnkit heard the song of a blackbird, echoing throughout the camp, waiting for an answer. She stretched her legs and hopped out of the den, landing near a puddle, but instead of splashing her paws in it, like she would often do, she sat down next to it and stared inside. She saw the sky and clouds, the trees around her and the silhouette of the camp. But most importantly, she saw herself. The morning light made her fur look softer, brighter, and her whiskers shone against the sky. She could see a little bit of her sister in herself, though she lacked the white fur, safe for her muzzle and a patch on her chest.

Fawnkit purred, staring at herself - she liked the way her pelt looked, her dark spots and round ears. She wondered how different she would look when all grown up, wondered if she would get any cool battle scars or maybe if her eyes would change color once she got older.

As she stared at herself in the puddle, she failed to notice the sound of pawsteps behind her, and only realised once the shape of another cat appeared in the reflection, next to her, and she jumped up in surprise, startled by the clanmate that had approached her.

"Oh.." she breathed, trying to giggle. "Sorry, I didn't see you there."

Today had been blessed with rain-- Though some might be more inclined to call it cursed instead of blessed. The way it clung to your pelt and dripped off of overheard leaves before hitting you on the nose, argh! But there were upsides to this weather as well and in a lot of ways it was beautiful in its own right.

One of the upsides was the puddles that came with rain! They were fun to jump in, provided a nice enough drink too but they were also one way for a cat to have a look at themselves in the reflection a still puddle provided. One familiar kit seemed to be doing just this and Rattlepaw would pad over to join her after she started purring, what could she be seeing in the puddle that was enough to make her purr? Or maybe this was just the first time Fawnkit was seeing her own reflection?

Taking up a spot beside her and looking into the puddle as well Rattlepaw would give an apologetic smile seeing the kit jump in surprise at first "Sorry if I startled you!" He'd try and usher her back to looking in the puddles reflections. "I just heard you purring and wondered what you might be seeing in the puddle, I hope you don't mind if I join?" He hadn't gotten to hang out with the kits of camp all too often as of late, especially with being so busy with his training, but it was nice to slow down and see what they got up to every now and then, it wasn't all that long ago that he'd been confined to camp as a kit himself, he knew how restless one could get at that stage!

"Is this the first time you've seen a puddle, Fawnkit? It's hard to not want to jump in them, isn't it?"

It was just Rattlepaw, the tortoiseshell apprentice, who approached her, wanting to join her at the puddle. How nice!

Fawnkit felt a little embarassed at being caught purring at the sight of herself, but Rattlepaw didn't seem to be making fun of her, instead he seemed to be genuinly interested in what she had been doing. "I do like jumping in puddles!" she beamed. "But the sun made the reflection look so pretty and my fur shine bright, it made me look almost like my sister."

Instead of looking at the apprentice directly, Fawnkit looked at him through the puddle. He had so many pretty colours in his fur, mismatched and random, but she thought it looked nice, almost like the forest, divided into night and day. In comparison, her own fur was almost all just one color, with dark patterns, symmetrical and neat. She liked the contrast Rattlepaw's fur made next to her.

She moved her gaze from his fur to his face and felt heat rush into her ears as she realised the apprentice had been watching her back through the reflection, and she quickly averted her gaze, instead staring at her paws. "Sorry, I was just thinking about how different your pelt is to mine..." she tried to save herself. Why was she always so awkward around apprentices?

The apprentice would smile when Fawnkit beamed about how she liked to jump in puddles, this puddle had been just right though, showing her reflection with the sun that she'd stopped to look and noticed how it made her look like her sister. "Oh yeah?" He'd look down into the puddle again and looked at Fawnkit's reflection to see for himself and she was right! It did make her look a little like Dawnkit with the way the sun shone against her fur and turned it more golden in colour. He'd notice too that his own mixed pelt would look quite different in the sun's light as well but would soon also spot that he wasn't the only cat looking at his own reflection.

Fawnkit upon realizing he could see that she was looking at him quickly adverted her gaze down to her own paws instead, "It's alright!" He'd mew when she apologized, "I've been told before that I look like two cats mixed into one pelt, so it's understandable to look twice as long, right?" He'd give a silly sort of grin as though he was knowingly playing along with Fawnkit trying to save the conversation but also because he thought what he'd said was also pretty silly.

"We do have quite different pelts though, one side of mine looks like mother's and the other side... Looks like dad's" He paused for a few moments before continuing, pointing to Fawnkit's reflection in the puddle with a single claw, "And you look like a little chipmunk!-- Or maybe a little deer? I think that's what those are called" He hadn't even really seen a deer before but had heard about them! Fawnkit was way too small right now to be a deer though.

"Hey!" Fawnkit protested, though she was not offended. "I'm not a chipmunk!" she giggled.

Though, she supposed, she wasn't that much bigger than one. But that's not what she was named after, nor was it what baby deer were called! She assumed Rattlepaw knew that and was just having fun, so she chose not to correct him, focusing instead of what he had said earlier. She recognised the colors of Serpentberry in his coat, but the other half wasn't a pelt she recognised. She did not ask, for the tom hesitated before saying it in the first place, and she wasn't going to pry. Was she curious, however? Oh, yes, she was oh so curious, but what was she not curious about? She could survive without getting answers to everything...probably.

The sun had risen higher since she first looked into the puddle and her pelt was starting to look like hers again - she smiled to herself, looking at Rattlepaw's reflection again. She enjoyed his company, it was different from her usual interactions with her clanmates - he was patient and kind, something the other kittens were not, most of the time. Would they change, once apprentice aged, to be quieter and sweeter? Or was this just simply who Rattlepaw was - a kind and good-hearted tom, who chose to talk to her?

"Hey Rattlepaw?" she avoided his puddle-gaze and instead raised her head to look into his real eyes. "Thank you."
