Momma left Berrykit with Rain again - she had been doing that a lot lately, when visiting mom. Berrykit didn't really understand why he couldn't visit mom either in the healer's den if momma could, but he obeyed. At least it meant getting to spend more time with Rain and that was always a good thing. Though he did miss mom...

With these mixed emotions bubbling inside of him, he lay curled next to Rain's belly, warm and protected. He wondered if he would get to spend any time with her when she had kits of her own. And would they be his friends? "Rain?" he asked. "Can I play with your kits when they're here?"

Berrykit didn't fully understand why they had to wait for the kittens and why they couldn't just come now, but he didn't ask. There were some things he simply couldn't understand yet.

Rain had quickly grown accustomed to taking care of Starlingtrail and Chrysalisgaze's litter so the caretaker could visit her mate. Honestly, to her it was an honor that she'd been chosen, out of all the more qualified caretakers in the nursery. But she considered it good practice for tending to her own kits, due to arrive any day.

Her heart ached to think of Chrysalisgaze in the healer's den, how lonely for her and how frightening it was for her family and friends. She'd only managed to visit once, and had been devastated by the state of her friend, her pelt torn, her throat plastered with bandages. She hadn't been able to speak, and Rain hadn't stayed long so she could get back to the nursery and take charge of Berrykit and his siblings. She swallowed hard at the memory, then pushed it away. Chrysalisgaze was recovering well. Soon her kits would be able to see her. But until then, she would take care of them whenever Starlingtrail needed.

At the moment, they were dozing at her belly while Rain washed her face. The soft squeak of Berrykit's voice made her pause mid-groom.
"Of course you can,"
she purred.
"Not right away, though, they'll be too small at first - they'll need someone big and strong like you to look after them. But soon, yes, you will have some new playmates."
The thought of Berrykit leading a clowder of her own kittens around camp made her heart swell. She hopped she had a big litter, if for no other reason than for Berrykit to have more friends to entertain him.

Berrykit wondered if he was big enough to look after Rain's litter, he felt so small compared to his clanmates. But if Rain believed he could do it, then he knew he could. "I will be strong for them!" he exclaimed with determination. Though he wasn't sure what the kittens needed protection from, the camp has always been safe.

Not the outside, Berrykit thought painfully. He still wasn't sure exactly what happened to mom, all he knew was that she was hurt and he could not visit her. But mom was strong, he knew she was! She could get through everything...right? Though he tried to push these thoughts away, he couldn't shake off the anxiety gnawing at him. He was scared and he curled more tightly around Rain, keeping close to her. "I will be strong for them just like momma is strong for me..." he whispered, more to himself than to Rain.

He knew momma was worried about their mom too, though she tried to be at ease around him and his siblings. But Berrykit saw how her muscles tensed at every noise, how her eyes widened everytime Swallowbreeze came to check up on Rain. He felt how her tail curled tightly around them every night as they slept and he didn't know what he could do to help.

Rain grinned at the determination in his voice.
"I know you will,"
she purred. She watched him as his expression grew thoughtful, gaze far away, before he tucked himself against her side. She blinked, unsure what he'd thought about that had upset him. She had to strain her ears to hear what he'd whispered to himself, but she caught enough to get the gist of it. Her heart ached for him. How confusing it must all be.

"I know you will,"
she repeated, gentler this time. Carefully, she wrapped her tail around him and his siblings, reaching over to press her nose to his cheek.
"You're lucky to have such brave, strong mothers. You're growing up to be just like them."
She hoped her words would soothe him. He was so tender, and this world could be so harsh. She hoped he could maintain his lighthearted innocence for as long as possible.

Berrykit purred as Rain spoke, her soft tail gently wrapped around him. It felt safe, warm and familiar. It felt like early days when he would lay curled against the warm bodies of his siblings and mothers. It felt like home...

"Thanks ma...-" he stopped himself, heat rushing to his ears. "Sorry! I meant Rain!" Berrykit felt so embarrased, he covered his face with his paws, unable to look at Rain. How had that happened? He was thinking about his mothers, how Rain reminded him of them, but... to actually call her that accidentally? Berrykit hoped she wasn't mad.

He had called her mama! That was reserved for her own kittens, he just felt so...safe. His tail twitched against his side, "Sorry Rain..."

Rain's eyes widened, but otherwise she tried to not react. Berrykit quickly corrected himself, burying his face in his paws, clearly embarrassed. She supposed she understood why, but she couldn't help the emotion that formed a lump in her throat. Mama? Her? It still felt too hard to believe, despite everything. There was something validating about being good enough with Berrykit and his siblings that he'd accidentally called her his mother. Maybe she'd be a good mother after all. It was also just... so cute.

"You don't need to be sorry, it's okay,"
she purred gently. She reached over with one paw and pulled him towards her, offering a few laps on the top of his head.
"Everything is okay."
