⋆˚✿˖° I was dancing in the rain, I felt alive and I can't explain
Gone.
They were leaving this place... The land that had once sheltered them, where her kits had grown, where she had watched Rain and Lilac dance through the downpours, their laughter ringing through the air. This was where she had given them life, where she had nursed them, where she had kept them warm and safe. And now, it was where she had lost him.
Rain.
Too small, still. Too young to have been taken from her so cruelly. She had done everything she could, tried so desperately to breathe life back into him-- But she had been too late. Too late. Wave kept telling her there was nothing more she could have done. That she should not carry the weight of his death on her shoulders. That damn black-and-white molly was too observant, always catching the distant look in Brook's eyes, the way she lingered by his grave. But how could she believe it? How could she ever stop asking herself what more she could have done?
For the sake of Lilac, for Pine, for those who still cared for her, she told herself she had to try. She was alive. And she had to keep moving. But not yet. Stepping forward, Brook pressed a paw to the sand, her gaze falling on the smooth stone that marked his grave. " Rain. " she murmured, voice barely above a whisper. " Mama has to go. "
She remembered the first night she had laid here, curled atop the fresh earth, refusing to leave him alone in the cold. She had begged them all to let her stay. But time had pulled her forward, whether she wanted it to or not. "Sweet boy... "[/color] she choked, dipping her head. " Mama is so, so proud of you. Please, never forget that. I love you more than anything. " Her voice trembled as she forced herself to continue. " You were the best brother Lilac could have asked for. You saved her, Rain. You saved her. " She swallowed back a sob, her body trembling. " I only wish-- " The words caught in her throat.
I only wish I could have saved you too.
Tears burned at her eyes, spilling freely now. She folded in on herself, resting against the grave as grief overtook her. " We're moving to a safer place... " she whispered. " Somewhere Lilac can grow up without fear, without the weight of the sea pressing down on her. She'll be safe. And I… " Her voice broke. " I will never forget you... " She closed her eyes, breathing in the scent of the earth, of the lingering traces of him that would never truly fade from her heart. " Though your body may rest here, I pray your spirit will follow us. But oh, how I hate the thought of leaving you here alone. Please... Please forgive me... Forgive your mama... "
A sob wracked her frame. " I'm so sorry. " The words were raw, torn from her soul.
" I love you, Rain... " A shuddering breath. "Farewell, my brave son. "
