MARBLE OF SHADOWCLAN

Marble trotted alongside Gecko with her usual cheerful energy, her paws light and her eyes bright as she chatted. " And Wolf showed me a lot of good places to hunt when everything was... well... you know. Not like this. " Her words carried a touch of wistfulness, though she quickly masked it with a brighter tone. " Of course, there are new places to figure out hunting now too. " she added, her whiskers twitching as a soft smile curled on her lips.

She glanced around, her ears flicking. " I wouldn't go for the weird prey Vampire tried, though. That seemed like a terrible idea. " she muttered with a small chuckle, mostly to herself. Pausing in her steps, Marble perked up her ears and scanned their surroundings. She had a habit of talking too much, though she rarely realized it. After all, she and Gecko had already caught one piece of prey together. So surely, they could find more to bring back for the good of the clan!

" Manzanita is really- oh, sorry, Manzanitapaw now, right? Well, she's really growing up well, isn't she? " Marble's voice grew warmer as she turned her wide, admiring eyes toward Gecko. " Your daughter is so pretty! You must be proud of her. " she said earnestly, her tone kind and genuine.

Her words trailed off as her ears swiveled, catching a faint sound in the distance. She crouched slightly, her voice lowering to a murmur. " Do you hear that? " she asked, her tail flicking behind her. " I think... I think there's prey nearby. "

Her gaze darted to Gecko, her eyes alight with quiet excitement as she waited for the other's response. For all her chatter, Marble had a sharp instinct for hunting when it mattered, and she was ready to spring into action at a moment's notice.

marbleshine was quite the chatterbox when given the opportunity to speak freely, but gecko doesn't seem too bothered by it. she simply nodded along, occasionally flashing a small smile, as they made their way through the territory.
"lets be honest with ourselves dear, most of the prey around here is less than appetizing."
she replies with a slight scoff, of course this is referring to the more odd creatures her clanmates seem to scrounge up and bring home. they were practically living on scraps and they should just take what they could get but gecko refuses to go near any prey that happens to be slimey or reeks of crowfood.

the topic shifts again but this time the subject is her daughter which never fails brings a twinkle of joy to her eye.
"i'm glad you've noticed. mazanitapaw is my pride and joy, of course i'm proud of her."
she rumbles out warmly, the addition of -paw to her child's name still feels odd on her tongue but that doesn't stop gecko from gushing on about her.
"oh, it feels like yesterday when she was just this little bundle of fur nestled at my belly."
a sigh spills from her lips, seeming to reminisce for a moment before marbleshine is pointing out potential prey hiding somewhere.

the rosette tabby swivels her ears forwards to listen and at first she couldn't hear anything but after some waiting the sound of rustling catches her attention.
"mm, seems to be coming from that direction."
gecko says, flicking her tail towards a paticular cluster of wilted shrubbery just south of where they currently stood.
"let's get closer."
with that she sets off, frame pressed a little lower towards the ground but not fully because there's no way in hell she's gonna let her belly brush against the mud.

Gecko had been right about one thing, the prey here was unlike anything they were used to. Very different, and certainly strange. Some of it was edible, while other things left bellies aching for hours. But this one... oh, this one was perfect!

With a gleam in her eye, she crept a little closer, her paws silent against the muddy ground. The muskrat hadn't noticed the two she-cats yet, and that was their advantage. She felt the damp earth cling to her fur as she moved, and though she didn't mind a bit of mud, leafbare had made it far worse than usual. Cleaning it off later would be such a hassle. She prayed that eventually, the sun would come and show that this place held beauty, too.

Pausing, she glanced toward Gecko, her excitement clear as she wiggled her haunches slightly. Her tail flicked toward the muskrat, signaling her plan. If they coordinated this just right, they could flank the creature, one of them chasing it straight into the other's waiting claws.

It was a plump catch, more than enough for a few cats to share. Her stomach rumbled faintly at the thought, but she forced herself to stay focused. Once the muskrat was theirs, she could relax, maybe even return to their earlier conversation, about the odd prey, Gecko's beautiful daughter, or whatever else came to mind.

For now, though, there was a task at paw. She crouched lower, her muscles coiling in preparation, ready for the moment to pounce. This muskrat wouldn't stand a chance.
