{$title} After returning from the hunting patrol led by Sablestar, some cats managed to catch prey- but Viperhowl seems highly against sharing.

Viperhowls stomach roared loudly by the time they got to camp. He didn't know how many days it had been since he caught something and ate- but waiting this long was extraordinarily hard. It reminded him of when he was young again, and food was scarce between cats that were what- triple than what they had now? Didn't Sablestar promise never having to starve again? He wondered before shrugging as he pulled into camp.

He gripped the rabbit with his jaw protectively as he entered camp, and he did not think about the hungry children. Or the hungry elders. Everyone was starving- and he spent energy to take down this rabbit. Honestly the last of it, so others could call him selfish, but he needed more energy if they wanted him to keep working. Because what was in it for him if he hunted and was still starving?

Absolutely nothing.

Viperhowl finally plopped down, tearing teeth immediately into the rabbits haunch, ripping meat from bone messily as he let out a sigh of relief as the flesh was swallowed down. It made the tom more ravenous, beginning to bite down more when a movement caught his side of his golden orange gaze and a snarl ripped from his filled mouth. Before fully seeing who it was, his paw shot forward with claws unsheathed as he swung a warning swipe at whoever tried to near his food. No one ever said he had to share.

& I don't know what's got its TEETH in me

You didn't see rabbits often, they were more common on the open fields of WindClan than the marshes but sometimes one might burrow in the loamy soil for a while but rarely linger long; their earth was just not made for rabbit tunnels - they collapsed often, they crumbled in the first heavy downpour. He had heard from Peafowlpaw that WindClanner's sometimes even slept in those holes and couldn't imagine laying in what amounted to a grave of bodies not yet gone. Some slept under the stars too, apparently, and that was a little more interesting to him. The trees here did not cover the sky like they often did in the thicker forests like ThunderClan but there were few spots where you could witness the celestial sighs above unblemished.

Magpiepaw wobbled forward at the sight of the lapine, curious to get a closer look at Viperhowl dropped it; he wasn't necessarily hungry, not right now anyways, but he wanted to look at the paws that he had heard were covered in thick clumps of fur rather than the rough but cushioned pad of a cats. How did they feel the ground? How did they walk? Was it comfortable having nothing between you and the dirt? Several questions flashed through the medicine cat apprentice's mind, but it was claws that flashed across his face. His wobbling and unsteady gait for once benefited him rather than betray him for when he felt the wind rustle by his nose he jerked back and fell off-balance, tumbling onto his tail with only the faintest scratch across the bridge of his muzzle.
It didn't lessen the sting, but it did surprise him enough to give a yowl of alarm.

indentttMothbite is glad to see the patrol return, rabbits in tow. A nice catch! It should fill plenty of bellies - and let them save the marshland's prey for the bitter cold of Leafbare. Casual, he moves to greet the hunters. "Looks good! I bet you did better than those Windclan cats can manage, even." He chirps. With cats like these on their side, there's no way they'll have to worry about food again. That's what Mothbite tells himself, at least.

indentttRecently, Mothbite has barely been able to go a single sunrise without the question of food nagging at him. The memories of starving gnaw at his stomach like a rat, putting him on edge. The rest of Shadowclan must be feeling the same way, he muses. Almost all of them had lived through a famine just 10 moons earlier, and it's not the sort of experience that's readily forgotten.

indentttHis aggrandizing of the patrol is stopped in it's track by a flash of claws. "Hey, what they hell's your problem?" He hadn't been paying close attention, and only caught the action out of the corner of his eyes. He's sure of what he saw, though. Viperhowl had slapped Magpiepaw, claws unsheathed! "One good catch doesn't give you the right to act like the fuckin' boss around here, alright?" Mothbite is already huffing and puffing as he approaches. Who does this kid think he is?

indentttThough he keeps his claws sheathed, his pelt ripples with agitation. He didn't see what Magpiepaw had done to prompt the blow, but there's no way it could justify slapping someone's face. In the middle of camp, no less! Still, he waits for Viperhowl to explain himself, if only so he can give him an even longer lecture.

Grayflight carried the rabbit into camp, only to nearly crash into Viperhowl as he instantly tore into his catch, nearly scoring a claw through the apprentice's snout.

Grayflight was not a violent cat. It was the one thing that their leadership seemed to slight him for. But seeing the warrior attacking one of their healers...

"What the fuck do you think you're doing?" he hissed, baring his teeth. "That's Magpiepaw you just swiped at!" He felt the fur on his shoulders bristle, and the unfamiliar anger had him feeling nearly sick to his stomach. This wasn't him... but he couldn't just sit by and let him be disrespected. He turned away from Viperhowl, trying not to look at the other cat, and padded closer to Magpiepaw.

"Hey," he murmured. "Why don't you and Cicadabuzz take this one?" he offered, dropping the still warm rabbit in front of him.

SPEECH || THOUGHTS

When you're lost in the universe, lost in the universe, don't lose faith
My mother says, "Your whole life's in the paws of the Stars"

.

" Great going, Viperhowl. Definitely going for the dream team here. Feeling the team spirit. " drawled Tickfrost, voice as flat as the ground beneath his paws. His torn ear flicked once as he cast a sharp glance toward Viperhowl before his gaze softened slightly, settling on Magpiepaw. The scent of blood, faint but unmistakable, stung his nose, and his whiskers twitched. Just a scratch. The kid wouldn't die. But it was still wrong. If this was how ShadowClan was going to survive leafbare, by snapping at one another over scraps and baring teeth at every shadow that came too close, then help them all. It was going to be a long, long season.

He sighed, a quiet sound of exhaustion rather than anger, and padded over to Magpiepaw. His touch was gentle as he rested a paw against the young cat's shoulder. " You good, kid? " he murmured, his orange eyes soft despite the gruff tone. When Grayflight dropped their prey in front of Magpiepaw, Tickfrost's gaze followed the gesture. He knew Magpiepaw had a balancing problem, he was uncertain whether the younger cat would manage carrying the whole rabbit back to the medicine den in one go...

" If you want... " Tickfrost said, lowering his voice. " I can help carry it to the medicine den. " He didn't say it, but the thought lingered in his mind: The clan was fraying at the edges... And someone had to make sure it didn't tear completely apart.

Of fuckin course it had to be Sablestars kid themselves- Viperhowls ears folded back as he slowly drew his paw back. He was about to mumble some apology, and offer to share when not one, but two clanmates bombarded him, and a third had to let out a sarcastic drawl that made Viperhowl immediately tense and aggressive. "This is the first thing I'm eating in two days, and you find yourself so willing to try to take it right in front of everyone?" He accused with a scoff, narrowing eyes that were like flames licking the orbs as he watched the blood bead on Magpies nose.

"Now I didn't mean to, but no one should be touching prey that is in other people's paws- thats just unmannerly." He growled, lashing his tail as he grabbed the rabbit with his jaws. "I ain't trying to act like a boss, that's nonsense- I would never want to be one." He said, moving his daggers of eyes to Mothbite. "I ain't bossing people around- I'm protecting what's mine." He commented before turning to try to leave with a flick of his tail. "You forget where we come from- you forget that we have spent our entire lives starving, haven't you?" Viperhowl growled to the older warriors, flicking gaze between them before moving to take his catch elsewhere and eat alone. He spoke the truth, what he felt at least. He wasn't thin for no reason.... Did they really expect him to suddenly change? He remembered he'd always been aggressive with food- and sure, he could change, but why would he?

Out unless stopped//

indentttViperhowl's eyes flash with regret, but Mothbite it too upset to notice. The stinging cold has brought his mind back to their old colony, the hungry nights spent among 'friends' who would be more than happy to have his pelt if they found out he wasn't willing to starve for Hawthorne's leadership. Mothbite had been younger, then, and more cowardly. Willing to spit profanities and dissent, but not brave enough to back it up. He'd been cowed by the fear of losing what little he had, but the famine had managed to take everything anyways. Now, he's determined to stand behind his words - no matter how unhelpful.

indenttt"Who cares if you didn't mean it? You could have the decency to look ashamed, at least." Mothbite's tail lashes, the white tip swinging wildly from side to side. Viperhowl grabs his quarry and slips away before Mothbite can lecture him any more, although he shouts a final warning to the offending tom. "We're all starving, stupid!"

indentttMothbite exhales sharply through his nose, turning away from Viperhowl. He can't even stand to look at him right now. "Whatever. He's not even listening." Mothbite mumbles under his breath. He'll have to report this to Sablestar later. Then their leader will assess Viperhowls actions, and Mothbite's reaction. The thought of it makes him wince. "Sorry about that, Magpiepaw."
