(𓆩✧𓆪) no matter how hard he tries, the boy cannot get that day out of his head. it's as if his father's blood sticks in his brain like it had coated wolfpack's paws, sliding into the crevices of dreampaw's thoughts until it is all he can do not to dunk it beneath the river until the water runs clear again. darkness shrouds the camp, but it does not mean that shadowclan sleeps - nocturnal creatures that they are, it is not hard to find at least a few cats awake at this hour. dreampaw is one of them. he lays outside of the apprentices' den, his mind wandering over various events of the day, but always snapping back to that moment the moon before. his father had never approached him to let him know he'd seen him, or even scented him, meaning no cat knows that the boy was there besides himself, and as such, he has no cat to talk to. cicadabuzz would take alarm at the knowledge of his leader's death. magpiepaw has enough to handle with juniperstar's death - he doesn't need to know about sablestar too.

the only cat to talk to, besides wolfpack, who he will not approach, is sablestar himself. the dual-hued tomcat has vanished into his den, but his son suspects he is awake. his father never seems to sleep, even when he needs it. getting to his paws, the boy stalks carefully over to his father's den, scenting the air to confirm his presence. movement within confirms his suspicions of an alert king, and so the boy rustles the moss by the entrance softly. "papa?" he murmurs, ears flattening. all of a sudden, his stomach is flipping - there's no way he'd get in trouble... right? mustering his courage, dreampaw speaks again. "i have... something i want to talk about."

a longhaired chocolate spotted tabby with low white and orange eyes. silky chocolate fur cascades in waves across his boxy frame, darker dapples giving him his tabby pelt. creamy white splashes his paws, belly, tail tip, and muzzle, freckling across his face. the hue of a crackling fire sparkles from narrow sockets.

The night had fallen across the pocosin but Sablestar had risen just before the sun was completely swallowed beneath the horizon. He had started with a patrol just as harsh blazing hues faded into the darkness, returning before the moon reached it's highest. Another border secured before nightfall with what had begun to fall into a pleasant habit of calm and undisturbed outtings. He had retreated into the confines of his den for a moment to clean the mud from his paws so they weren't weighed down when he returned to the forest to hunt.

It was not uncommon that his time in his den would be rendered short in cause of urgency. Many attempts of sleep and rest interrupted over the presence of a threat or stranger. He would have expected the same as he heard someone outside his den, only to be surprised by the face of his son. "Dreamie, you can come in."

The tuxedo tom's mew is warm as he shuffled in the hollow to make space for the boy to join him. He could think of few things that could bother Dreampaw enough to approach him in the quiet like this- he hoped it wasn't something to do with his training. Or worse, some sort of feeling developed about his place in either of his parents Clans. He already had the pressure of Magpiepaw's sudden onset of refusal to be in ThunderClan.

(𓆩✧𓆪) anxious eyes, color a mirror of his fathers, blink up at the scarred tom as dreampaw slips into the den. it's warm, surprisingly comfortable for the king of the pocosin, but for the version of sablestar his son knows, his den feels like home. curling in beside the man, the apprentice shakes the anxiety from him, smoothing his fur with a few comforting licks. he's not going to be mad, dreampaw reasons, why would he be? despite his comforting thoughts, there's a hesitance to his voice as he speaks again.

"i... um," swallowing, he closes his eyes, working the words up, up from his stomach, through his throat, until they spill from his maw. "i followed you and wolfpack to fourtrees and heard your conversation a-about the lives, and i saw him kill you." it's let out like a rush of water, spewing from his tongue. immediately, relief seems to let tension from his shoulders, and the boy takes a breath. "and i'm sorry i just thought you were gonna hunt and so i was gonna track you to show off my skills." involuntarily, tears spring into his eyes, and he opens them, meeting his father's glowing gaze. "i'm sorry... i'm sorry," he breathes, and against his will, his chin trembles. don't be mad... please don't be mad. "you came back to life..."

A fuzzy-furred forehead knocked into the tabby's as he clambered into Sablestar's nest with him. Even as he rolled over the possibilities of what worried his son, it gave great reassurance to see that even at this age, Dreampaw would still find comfort at his side. He joined in smoothing the fur that sprung out of place along his pelt, holding his tongue between his teeth when Dreampaw began to speak.

It spilled like an overflowing river, bubbling from somewhere deep within and pooling into the rush of words. He spoke so quickly, without any pause or stammer, that Sablestar had taken an extra moment to unwind it all. His teeth sank lower against his tongue until he felt something give and trickle the taste of iron. He gave an exhale, releasing the tension from his clenched jaws and swiped it over the back of Dreampaw's neck. The punctures stung, he watched as minuscule droplets tangled into the strands of Dreampaw's fur.

He wasn't sure how to feel. He wanted to be angry- he was- with himself for not being so thorough in shaking off any strays. He should have taken Wolfpack further. As far from any border that they knew of, maybe to where he killed Hawthorne. Though it was too late to think of now, as much as he wanted to twist his teeth into Dreampaw's scruff and hurl them both back to that moment. But more than his anger, what pushed it down into flattened earth was the disappointment. He didn't enjoy keeping so much from his children, the truth of what laid ahead for him. Why his mother had touched the stars for her gifts, yet he refused them while bearing the same. They should never have to fear the fate that awaited their father, but with the boon between his paws, they should never fear to live to see it.

Finally, he mews. "Leadership is not without it's secrets." He does not sound anything less than uncomfortable. "It was never a doubt I would come back, and it doesn't matter why it happened. You should be assured, Dreampaw, that it has left me capable of being a better leader." Laying across the cold ground of the medicine den, bundles of blood-soaked moss surrounding his near-lifeless body. Comforted by the inevitable, by knowledge. Nothing more to fear for what he did not know. All he had to do now, was to prepare.

"You know we've been given nine, son? I promise you, it's been the only time to happen to me." Sablestar reassured sincerely, pressing his nose to the other's ear. "Your mother and I have a long, long time to go before either of us join the skies."
