𓆣𓆣 In its seven or eight days of life, the kit has known nothing more than this. Warmth pressed in at all sides, the occasional kick or squeal from the littermates around it, and the rarer shifting of its source of food away, which draws a series of high-pitched squawks from Goldenrodkit each time it happens. At the very least, their nest is warm and comfortable, but the writhing of bodies around it makes the scrap of fur long for something better than this. It does not quite know why it does so, but instead of lying contained at its mother's side, Goldenrodkit begins to climb the body in front of it. Uncoordinated and slow, it is only because there are six kits to keep track of that it manages to scale the fluffy obstacle in its way. It recognizes the obstacle as its caretaker, the source of everything in its life so far, but in the moment Wisteriastrike is nothing more than a hurdle in the way.

Finally, with its mountain climbed and its energy fully expended, the kit's limbs splay out with a heavy exhale. Yet, after climbing atop its mother's body, there is only one place left to go: back down. Its tiny paws scrabble for purchase, but Wisteriastrike's fur offers none, and the kit goes slipping down the other side of its dam's flank. Falling onto the side, separated from its siblings, blind and deaf to the world, the kit is truly lost. It gives a warbling cry, feeble and fragile against the moss beneath its paws, before attempting to scuttle its way out of the nest entirely.

MAGGOTKIT

The small kitten wasn't old enough to understand what was going on around it. It couldn't see, couldn't hear properly, and yet something was missing and Maggotkit felt it. Perhaps it felt the lack of a warm body, reduced from six to five, or, and this was more likely, it noticed the lack of kicking and shoving received. Maggotkit always seemed to have found itself the receiving end of its siblings' emotions or goals, always in the way, to be pushed away. Now the world was still and Maggotkit rested in peace. Or, it tried to at least, but this change was strange - it had always known the kicks of its siblings and to receive none was something Maggotkit wasn't familiar nor comfortable with.

And so Maggotkit went on a search to find what was missing, though it did not understand that it was its sibling. Crawling came naturally to the kitten, the pathetic, blind movements the only thing it has known. But suddenly the world turned cold as Maggotkit reached the end of the moss-lined nest and fell to the ground, the texture rough and painful. The kitten wanted to escape the cold, the rough feeling rubbing against its stomach, and pressed on further, not knowing what turning back means just yet.

If anyone watched the kitten, they would have known it crawled in the opposite direction from its sibling - but Maggotkit had no way of knowing, with no concept of direction, no sense of what the world was actually like.

Tickfrost's silhouette melted into the dim light of the nursery, the scent of milk and moss wrapping around him like a half-remembered dream. Warmth, muffled mews, the soft rhythm of tiny breaths, all of it pulled something deep in his chest. For a moment, he wasn't Tickfrost, warrior of ShadowClan, but a small scrap of fur again, tucked beneath the belly of a queen who wasn't his by blood but had loved him just the same. He missed her, in his own quiet way. And he realized that Mirepurr... Had filled up that hole in his heart. An anchor, his guide, the only figure that had ever truly filled that hollow space called 'parent.' He'd never said it aloud, never would. But as he stood in the nursery, surrounded by new life, the weight of that unspoken truth pressed heavy against his ribs.

Movement caught his eye, a kit, tumbling clumsily over the edge of their mother, little paws pushing away from Wisteriastrike. A soft huff escaped him as he bent down, his shadow falling over the tiny escapee. " Hey, hey... " His voice came low and even, a rumble of amusement beneath it. " Where do you think you're going, kit? " He scooped the squirming bundle up gently between his jaws, padding to the other side of the nest. Tickfrost set the kit down with a soft chuckle. " Stay put, troublemaker... " he murmured softly, careful not to wake Wisteriastrike, then caught sight of another wriggler trying to follow in its sibling's pawsteps.

" Oh, not you too. " he muttered, leaning in to nudge the second kit back toward warmth and safety. The tiny mewl that answered made something ache behind his ribs. " Your ma and siblings' the other way, kit. Not much waiting for you out there but cold wind and loud warriors. " He lingered at the nest, his tail curling around his paws. For a brief, fragile heartbeat, the world outside didn't exist, no starving bellies, no bloodied Gatherings, no cold nights creeping closer. Just warmth. Breath. Life.

It was hard to not wake. If not for the small, clambering paws over her flank, the squeals of a kitten lost in the opposite direction, or the hurried whispers of Tickfrost... Wisteriastrike would've still found reason to rouse herself in the dead of the night. She calls it this odd, maternal tether - where no matter the circumstance, instinct would pull her from unconsciousness to even just draw her tongue across her kits and ensure they're all beside her, happy and breathing. It gets stronger day by day, she finds. One evening she is simply grateful the pregnancy is over, and the next, she's finding a blossoming adoration for her overload of kits.

"No need to whisper, Tickfrost," she murmurs, her sleepy drawl following the lilt of a yawn. He returns two kits to her nest, and the molly takes inventory of her six - even double counting to be sure. "I appreciate the effort, though," she continues to the young warrior, just to assuage any guilt the tom may have. Her gaze fits to the young bodies beside her, only so many days old yet so adventurous and curious... Cicadabuzz isn't as enamored with them as she is, she knows, but certainly bug would enjoy hearing tales of his great escape. Something about promise.

"Do you like being a nursery's guard?" she asks the blue pelted tom, eyebrows arching up with her inquiry.

Elderkit was pulled from an - admittedly - fitful rest by the rambunctious wiggling of his littermates as they crawl and tumble about the nest that their mother rested in. He let out a pitiful cry of his own, not nearly as enthralled by the idea of misadventure as his siblings seem to be. Unlike Maggotkit and Centipedekit, Elderkit pulled himself closer to the familiar heat of his mother's belly.

Just as quickly as his siblings had tried crawling away from that warmth, they were pushed back into place by a figure that Elderkit could only place by the rumbling vibrations it produced that managed to pierce through the blind nature of the kit. The rumbling isn't the same as Elderkit's grown used to from his mother, and he tucked himself closer to Wisteriastrike, small, nervous shivers wracking his body.

Tickfrost's ears twitched nervously as Wisteriastrike's gaze pinned him, the warmth of embarrassment flushing through his chest. Orange hues wide, he froze for a heartbeat, tail curling protectively around his paws. Caught... Caught, caught... The thought repeated itself like a frantic heartbeat.

" I-- " His voice faltered, and the words dried in his throat as he tried to summon something coherent. What was he supposed to say? That he didn't mind standing guard? That he rather liked being here among all this tiny, squirming life? His eyes drifted down to the nest of kits, wriggling and squeaking without a care in the world. Tiny paws kneading the soft fur, tails twitching, eyes that would be filled with curiosity and innocence. Not yet knowing the dangers of the world, not yet burdened with the scars and shadows that haunted him.

A soft, uncharacteristic chuckle escaped him, low and rumbling in his throat. " I think I enjoy... the... " His words stumbled again, halting on the edge of something he didn't know how to say. He lifted his head, orange eyes glimmering with a rare vulnerability, before finishing quietly. " ... The breath of new life. The… I've never seen it like this before. "

He glanced back at Wisteriastrike, his expression softening. The words felt insufficient, too small for the weight of what he wanted to express. Memories of darkness, of hunger, of running through cold forests clawed at the edges of his mind, but here, among the warmth of fur and the soft chorus of kitten cries, there was... Life. Real, unbroken life. He shifted slightly, settling more firmly near the nest, tail wrapping tighter around his paws. A faint, almost shy smile tugged at his muzzle. " I won't linger long... There's prey to be caught. I can see if I can catch you something. "
