// pre gladebloom disappearance.

The sweltering heat of greenleaf finally ebbed for the day, the scent of bittersweet herbs curling softly around her… One moment, she was nestled in her woven grass nest, drifting off to the lull of cricket song. When she opened her eyes and the medicine-den was gone, the strings of a breeze tugged softly at her mosaic pelt.

She blinked against the soft opalescent glow that lit the air, breathlessly taking in her surroundings.

Unlike the last time she had a dream like this, Meadowpaw stood in a field that she recognized. If she didn't know any better, she would think she was still in WindClan, but this place seemed to be an ethereal reflection of her home. Wildflowers swayed gently, their petals glowing with gentle starlight. The sky above pulsed with shifting hues, as if all the stars had been poured into a great, glimmering river. Every blade of grass and even the ground itself sparkled faintly with silver. "Wow…" She gawked, eyes alit with awe.

As she turned, through the tall grass stepped a lean she-cat. Her pelt glimmered with the same light that made up everything else, especially where the spots broke against their fur, like constellations against a dark shy. Their eyes regarded her kindly, a bright dandelion yellow. "H-hello…? Who are you?" Despite the warmth in them as they rested on her, Meadowpaw hesitated.

Leopard....Leopardsoft had taken to wandering what she learned was the reflection of Windclan's territory. If things had been different, if she had been more firm with her daughter, would she be calling those cats her clanmates..? Or would she have been among those who had perished in the fire? There's a cold sort of comfort to it in a way, even if bittersweet, that she might have had just a little bit more time with Seal...

There's a faint whisper of movement in the starlit grass, a telltale sign of someone approaching and the molly turns idly half expecting Thornstar or perhaps Flintberry to be therr. But no, it's someone alive that her gaze rests on when she turns.

A small molly, younger than her daughter would be now, is looking around in awe. It was the same for her as the territory of Starclan expanded along with each clan reawakening. Their eyes lock for a moment and the spirit gives a faint smile before stepping forward at her question. "Hello, little one, in life I was Leopard... But you may call me Leopardsoft if you'd like. Had things been different we may have called each other clanmates."

She stops but a tail length away, sitting with thin tail curled around her paws as the rosetted tabby did not want to overwhelm the other when she already seemed confused. "This is a place of peace, you have nothing to fear here." Leopardsoft murmurs gently. "What brings you here..? Are you looking for someone you lost?"

Like she was? Trying and failing to reach for even a glimpse of her still-living daughter? Had this young cat lost someone important as well? Her heart ached at the thought, hollow and painful that if Leopard still needed to breath she was sure she'd be gasping for a moment or two.

Leopardsoft. The name suited the beautiful tabby before her—speckled from ears to tail and wrapped in starlight, she truly was something out of a dream. "We could've been Clanmates?" Did that mean Leopardsoft could've ended up at the barn too? "Sorry, I'm Meadowpaw. I-it's nice to meet you."

At the spirit's gentle reassurance, some of the tension ebbed from her shoulders. Meadowpaw hobbled forward a few paces before settling down, tail instinctively curling over her mangled leg. "Ummm I don't think so? Truth be told, she kind of just ends up in places she probably shouldn't be. That was how she ended up meeting Ragwort and now Leopardsoft. Although... She had been wondering something for a while.

"Actually, do you know Alder, Chicken, and Hoot?" Their names felt heavy on her tongue. Her stomach twisted with anxiety. Dustystar had told them StarClan welcomed the cats who passed during the fire—but back then, Meadowpaw had chosen to believe it because the thought of them being among the stars was comforting. "They died in the barnfire before we became WindClan. I just… if you can tell me, I'd like to know that they're alright." She blinked up at Leopardsoft, a cautious flicker of hope in her chest.

There were other things she wanted to say. Lots of things, but most of all. I miss you. Your family misses you. Please visit me.

If she couldn't see them again, the least she could ask for was to know they were safe. That they were happy. The thought of them trapped in some place like that forest where she'd found Ragwort—it chilled her. No matter what they might have done, they didn't deserve that. She believed no one deserved that place. No crime was befitting an eternal existence void of light. No cat was born cruel, it was hardship that led them there. Living in darkness wouldn't make them reflect on their actions, if anything, she would think it'd just make them colder.

If somehow they were there, then she needed to find them. She'd find them and bring them back, just like she had with her friend. They could follow her forever if they needed to, so long as they never had to suffer in that sunless place.

The spirit nods at the question, her smile wavering faintly in pain. "Yes, I was going to take myself and my daughter to the barn, where it was safer. Food was scarce where we lived and many were starving." She imagined it was probably a common enough story. The barncats had a reputation for welcoming any cat that showed up with opened paws. "But I-"

Leopardsoft paused. Was murdered? Betrayed by the very cat she'd entrusted Seal to if anything were to happen to her? "-Did not make it there. My daughter is still alive, so I can take solace in that... It's lovely to meet you Meadowpaw."

I don't think so?

It brought a light chuckle to her lips, tail swaying low in the grass and kicking up stardust with the movement. Had she not even realized that she'd reached out to Starclan? The question of if others the molly had known were here dashed the grin on her face. She shifted to sit next to the apprentice in the grass, wanting to comfort but not wanting to invade her personal space too much. "I'm afraid I haven't seen them, they may not be here in Starclan if they didn't know about it before they passed," She began, quiet but soothing. "But there's another place like this, that's just as peaceful. That's where my mate and son are, I imagine they're there if not in Starclan. Perhaps they've met your friends."

There had been moments, be it weakness or simply curiosity, where Leopardsoft had found herself standing at that divide between Starclan and Purgatory. If she crossed the threshold would she find them? Would Petrichor remember her? Was Kelp as small as he'd been when the fox had gotten him or had he grown with time? Would they be angry to see she'd died and left Seal alone or be glad to be reunited? All questions she had been too afraid to find the answer to.

"If you'd like, I could ask around for you. Some cat who's been in Starclan longer than I have might know."

After everything Leopardsoft just told her Meadowpaw feels bad for asking. The thought of never making it to safety, of her daughter growing up without her, was just far too cruel.

"I-I'm sorry about what happened to you." Grief blooms from her words. They've both lost someone, and someone has lost them. She can't relate to all of it, but she feels that a little piece understands. "The barn burned down not too long ago, so maybe your daughter is safer wherever she is now." Her stomach felt like it was doing flips. Meadowpaw didn't know how to talk to someone like her. Talking to Ragwort was easier, but that might've been because he never talked about his death. "What was her name?"

When Leopardsoft says she doesn't know any of the cats she named, Meadowpaw can't hide the disappointment on her face. "B-but Dustystar said—!" The way her own voice cracks makes her flinch. Meadowpaw leans back and takes a deep breath. Just because she hasn't heard of them doesn't mean they're not in StarClan, right? Leopardsoft said she would look...

She swallows, but the tightness in her throat won't give. "Please. Please ask about them if you can. Even if that place isn't bad, I think they deserve to be here. They should be together." What did the place they might've ended up even look like? Was it anything like where they were now? She needed to know. "Besides I want to see them again too… when I die someday." Whether that was tomorrow or years from now, she wanted to see them again. She wanted to be with them. They were important to her. No different from the family she was born with or all the cats in WindClan.

Meadowpaw knew they were 'good' enough in life to be deserving of StarClan. They never did anything to deserve to be excluded from it.

An uneasy feeling twists and bends in her chest. Leopardsoft was being kind, but not knowing where the cats she loved ended up was frightening. What if they were in that place where Ragwort was? They were good cats, but so was Ragwort. Cats like him didn't belong in someplace so awful. "Is it okay to ask why your family isn't in StarClan with you, but you ended up here?" Something about that just struck her as odd.
