Pandora sat on the fence of her yard, pale orange eyes squinting in the late afternoon light at the expanse of forest before her. Had her friend gotten caught up in something? He'd said that things were beginning to get tense with the other cats he lived with. Something about their leader falling deathly ill, or was it something else? Truthfully she hadn't been paying as much attention to the other as she should have. Slowly she made the descent to the ground below, still sticking relatively close to the fence line as she stared out into the bushes before her. He wasn't normally this late, her twolegs would be home soon and they usually blocked off her tunnel once it began to get dark to keep her inside the den. If he didn't show up soon he might have made the trip for no reason. A waste of time and energy when the forest cat was already struggling so.

"Copper..!" Pandora called, not daring to move farther than a tail length away from her fence. "Copper, are you out there..?"

Ears pricked forward, waiting- begging for a response, a sign, anything- that the tom was nearby and within earshot. There was something important she had wanted to ask him last they met like this before she was interrupted by her twolegs calling for her.

'Why stay out there and struggle for scraps? …Why not stay here with me and my twolegs?'

COPPER OF THE COLONY

Copper had feared he wouldn't find a time to sneak out, to return to the two-leg place where he had met Pandora the kitty-pet. He was certain his father would actively murder him if ever he found out he was sharing tongues with a kittypet... But she was interesting and kind... She knew not of the troubles that tormented the colony. It was a breath of fresh air for him to find her. He did not feel the constant pressure of his father's eyes upon him... Didn't fear for the constant sense of having to be ... Better than he was. Both him and his brother. His sister was... Not quite under his father's pressure like that... Moreso because she was a she-cat and he didn't find her strong enough... Here... Here he was just Copper. Just Copper, nothing more and nothing less.

And even so... He could not stay within two-leg territory either, even if it meant being with Pandora... The betrayal he would feel toward his pack, toward his brother... No. He was a colony cat, nothing would change that... But he wouldn't stop meeting Pandora either... Oh... This was going to be quite the bind he was in eventually...

But not yet... And he did not leave with nothing in return. He always made sure to come back with some prey... He was pulling his weight. Stretching himself thin, surely... He knew this would eventually pop and disappear, like a bubble... But for the time he still had... He wanted to enjoy it... He wanted to enjoy her company. His ears pricked forward, hearing her voice on the wind, it caused a shudder of excitement as he quickened his pace toward her voice, eyes glistening up. " I'm comin'..! " he finally called back, taking a last jump before almost skidding to a half before her, relief upon his face at seeing her.

" Sorry... I'm a bit late... You did not think I would miss our daily conversations, did you? " he spoke with an almost smarmy look to his face before he winked once. " Not yours, never. How have you been? "

A purr rose in Pandora's throat before Copper even broke through the treeline, moving to touch noses with the tabby before pivoting and jumping back up to her fence.

"You're late," She pouted, though the smile never left her face as she looked back to be sure the other was following. "I almost ate all the kibble I saved for you." She would never, of course. Her twolegs often filled her bowl to near overflowing- there was far too much for her to eat in one day on her own. Perhaps even for several days.

Leading the tom through the tunnel into her twoleg's nest, she stretched out, tail waving lazily behind her as she waited for Copper to eat his fill from her bowl. It was their little routine now. She'd invite Copper in to eat and for a reprieve from the chill of leaf fall, then they'd share tongues or simply sit together and talk until either the sound of her twolegs arriving home prompted him to leave to avoid being seen or he felt he would soon be missed by the colony.

When Copper was finally finished she motioned him over. "How is the colony..? Are things any better than last time? And your family?" Pandora's whiskers twitched, uncertain on whether to press the matter at the forefront of her mind as she studied the tabby beside her. Surely it was safer here, in twolegplace, than out there?

COPPER OF THE COLONY

There was a trickle of contentness that moved through his veins when their noses touched. A low purr starting in the back of his throat before he gently 'bonked' his head against hers. " Eh, it's what you call late, Pan. Times always tend to vary, but I made it before your two legs came home, didn't I?" he opted simply, giving her a curious look, ears twitching. It wasn't as if he had wanted to be... Significantly at a different than than per usual... But clan life was a priority.

" You wouldn't have! " spoke the tom, a flicker of amusement in his eyes as she threw out her empty threat. Aside that, he had seen how full her bowl always was, it was amazing that the two-leg she claimed hers gave her that much to begin with. He padded after her, a nervous glance shot through the place for a second, almost as if he expected something to come at him from the shadows... When that didn't seem the case, he quickly bounded after her and slipped through the tunnel. It was one of his least favourite things to do... The first time he had been afraid it would've locked him up. He hadn't dared to go in unil Pandora showed him time and time again that she could move in and out, he wasn't locked away in the place if he joined her.

A rumbling stomach reminded him of all the fresh kill he had caught and gave to others, and he couldn't help the way he started munching down on the food, as if it was the first food he had for the day... In all honesty, aside from a few nibbles to show his brother he was eating too... It had been. He had been far too occupied with giving the little ones food and the mothers who were soon to have a litter... Or the mothers who needed the food to begin with.

When he finished, tongue licking over his muzzle, he finally placed himself down next to her, his messy tail gently moving over her. " I wish they were. " he admitted softly, a frown to his face. " Tensions seem to rise as every day passes... I'm afraid our leader; Fray... Won't be making it through this leafbare and we are just waiting for the inevitable. " he confessed, ears flicking down almost in shame at the thought as he looked to the side. " But Flint is doing well... he's got his eye on a pretty little thing. " he laughed softly. " My sister is as ditzy as ever and pouty. And--" he cut himself short for a second, mind wandering to his father before he forced himself to think of something else. " We've helped a cat yesterday... He was hurt pretty bad. " he finally opted quietly. " And little Seal is growing, and being ever so bold at times. " he snorted softly before looking over at her.

" But what about you, Pan? How are you doing? Is your two-leg treating you fine? "

It was still such an odd concept... Being owned by a two-leg... A kitty-pet life. He would feel too trapped in this place.

As the tom ate his fill, Pandora shifted to give him more room in the new nest her twolegs had given her. A flick of an ear was given, a small little huff of sympathy as she looked to her friend.

"I'm sorry Copper, that must be hard to watch…" And she truly meant it, though it was hard to wrap her mind around all he had said. Why would any cat want to live out there, fighting for scraps and freezing in the looming cold of leafbare when one could find a twoleg and be safe and warm and well fed? It was something she wondered about with Tulip, the neighboring cat, often. "You should bring your family sometime if you can, I'd love to meet them~" Pandora finally murmured, noting how the subject changed before nodding along with a hum.

"I'm just as fine as I was last time you saw me! My twolegs treat me very well, as always." She purred, pale eyes half closed. "Tulip is doing well too, last I saw her."

COPPER OF THE COLONY

Copper stretched out his legs, golden eyes glinting up as he peered over at her with a soft sigh falling from him. He couldn't help the way his body leaned into the warmth of the twoleg's nest. It was... Comfortable, yes... The sympathy found in her voice caused his ear to twitch once, eyes fixated on the ground for a second before he dared a glance toward her. Though her words were kind, they laid heavily upon his chest... She would never understand the struggle of life in the colony, but her trying to understand... Brought some sort of comfort.

" It is hard sometimes. " he admitted, thoughtfully. " But it is the life I know, it's the life I grew up in. " he murmured, glancing to the side for a second before giving a shake of the head as he looked back to her. " Aside that, don't get me wrong... The colony isn't just about scraps and cold! It's... It's about being together, surviving, a way of life that can't just be tossed aside. Honestly, I don't think I would trade it... Even if it sounds tough and rough to you. " he confessed with a soft chuckle, golden hues glinting and whiskers twitching lightly.

Meeting his family... What a foreign thought it was... Though it warmed his heart too. He knew for certain he would NEVER take his father along. But perhaps Flint... And with enough quiet coaxing, Cinder... " Maybe one day. " he finally opted, tilting his head a bit. " I think Flint would like to meet you. Uncertain about Cinder, she's a bit of a rascal, a free soul. " he meowed, giving an amused pur that rumbled deep in his throat.

A swift flick of the tail as lighter things were brought back into the spotlight, causing him to squint his eyes for a second as he listened in a somewhat content manner. " I'm glad to hear you're doing well, Pan... And that Tulip is too. " he laughed, genuinely, causing the sharp features he bore to soften a bit. " I'm glad your twolegs treat you well. " he spoke, turning his head to look around for a second. "... You have a good life here... "

His eyes lingered to the tunnel, staring at it almost as if he could feel the cool leafbare air upon his thick fur. And with some playfullness he turned back to her, eyes glistening. " Maybe I should have taken this route a little sooner, huh? " he teased with a wink before releasing a soft sigh. " But for now, I am grateful for the time I can spend with you. It's good to come here... To share warmth, food and tongues. " he meowed softly.

She had to wonder what the appeal of it all was. And why Copper seemed so adamant on staying in such a hard life. Surely it was because they had never known anything else..? A faint frown crossed her face at the thought, whiskers twitching before smiling once more.

'...Maybe he thought the same thing of my life…'

"I would love to meet Flint and Cinder~!" Pandora laughed, "I'm sure I'll get along with them just fine if they're anything like you." She genuinely meant it, it was hard to imagine Copper's family was anything but kind. Perhaps when leafbare fully hit she could invite him to bring his siblings along... It would be nice to bring them all into the warmth of her twoleg's den, if only for a little while-

The molly froze, having not been fully paying attention. For now- What did he mean by 'for now'? Was he thinking of not visiting anymore..? Had she said something?

"...You know you're always welcome here, right?" The question was cautious, ears flat to her head as if afraid of the answer even as she pressed herself against him. 'Please don't stop visiting…'

COPPER OF THE COLONY

The tom's tail twitched uneasily as he glanced away from Pandora, his golden eyes clouded with the tumult of emotions he kept buried deep. He hadn't wanted to admit it, not to her, not to himself. But the truth pressed against him like the cold bite of leafbare's wind, it was only a matter of time before this fragile arrangement unraveled.

He could feel Pandora's uncertainty, her silent plea for reassurance, in the way she pressed against him. And for a fleeting moment, he allowed himself the comfort of her closeness, the gentle warmth that made the world seem less harsh. But the shame still gnawed at him. This is wrong, his mind whispered again. His father's scornful gaze haunted him, the imagined sneer twisting in his thoughts. Charcoal's voice echoed in his ears: You're weak, Copper. Traitorous. A fool to throw your loyalties away for this...kittypet.

But it wasn't disloyalty, was it? He hunted for his family, for his Clan, giving everything he had. He carried the weight of their survival on his shoulders without complaint. And yet, this...this quiet joy he found in Pandora's presence felt like a betrayal. Not to his family, but to the image of the tom he was supposed to be. His golden gaze flickered back to her as she tilted her head, her wide, worried eyes searching his face for answers he didn't know how to give. She was scared. Scared that he would leave her behind, that he would vanish like a dream lost to the dawn.

And he couldn't blame her.

"I can't do this forever." he murmured again, his voice barely above a whisper. The admission tasted bitter on his tongue, the words carrying a weight that made his chest tighten. " But… " He lifted his head, pressing his forehead to hers, his touch gentle but resolute. " I'm here now. And I'll keep coming back… as long as I can. "

He couldn't promise forever. He couldn't promise that this wouldn't end in heartbreak. But for now, he could give her what little he had to offer, a fleeting moment of warmth in the cold expanse of uncertainty. And maybe, just maybe, that would be enough.

It was selfish of her to want him to stay when he had a family out there. She knew this. She knew but it still didn't lessen the feeling of wanting Copper to still visit, if he couldn't stay. Just...just this once she could be a little selfish, right?

"I know." Pandora finally breathed, pressing her forehead back against his with eyes closed. "If... WHEN this has to end, promise me you'll let me know..? I... don't want to be waiting for you and you just stop showing up one day, not knowing what's happened to you..."

It was obvious that nothing she said would convince him to stay. And she could accept that. What Pandora couldn't accept was him leaving without saying goodbye. It was a heartbreaking thought; a dear friend disappearing from her life without even so much as a goodbye. How many times had she lost friends-all fellow kittypets, of course- simply because their twolegs had decided they needed to move dens? If she could help it, she didn't want Copper to leave her life the same way. She at least wanted to be able to say goodbye one last time.

"You can visit as much as you want. For as long as you can... my den is always open to you-" Pandora cut herself off as her ears pricked, a familiar sound reaching her though to Copper it probably sounded just like any other monster. Her twolegs were coming home.

COPPER OF THE COLONY

Copper leaned into the gentle press of her forehead against his own, letting out a soft breath as a sense of calm washed over him. She always had this effect on him... this kittypet he knew he shouldn't be close to, but whom he couldn't bring himself to stay away from. He'd shared tongues, stories, and warmth with her more times than he could count, each moment precious. It was a fragile connection, one that might one day break, but for now, it was enough.

He closed his eyes briefly, his voice low and steady. " I promise, if this has to end, I'll let you know. I won't leave you waiting, wondering if I'll come back. I'll give you my goodbyes if it comes to that. " He rasped his tongue gently over her forehead, a soft gesture of reassurance. " But for now, we don't have to think about that. I'm here. I'm not going anywhere. " His nose brushed hers briefly, a fleeting but heartfelt touch.

Her words were a balm to him, her assurance that he could visit whenever he wished, that her den was open to him. A faint smile touched his lips as he nuzzled her gently. " I'm glad for that. " he murmured, his voice warm with gratitude. " You make me feel... you make me feel at h-- "

The sound of a door creaking open froze him mid-sentence, his ears pricking up in alarm. His golden eyes widened in shock, the calm shattered in an instant. He hissed softly, a reflex of surprise, and darted for the tunnel leading outside. The two-legs had returned home. His heart pounded as he slipped into the cover of the outdoors, his gaze flicking back toward her den.

"Thank you, I hope it doesn't come to that." Pandora finally murmured, voice barely audible. The reassurance that he would let her know ahead of time if they ever had to end... whatever this was instead of disappearing without a word soothed her anxieties somewhat. The calm was broken as the door of her nest opened, Copper nearly trampling her in his urgency to get outside unseen by her twolegs.

"Copper-!" The kittypet scrambled to get out of the tom's way, still perplexed by his reaction to her- no, to twolegs in general. Why the fear? They had been nothing but kind to her all her life...

A brief moment of hesitation before she followed, barrelling out of the tunnel with the flap clattering loudly behind her. He was not in her garden... Had he already..? Quickly she made the climb to the top of her fence, staring out into the forest trying to spy a telltale brown tail disappearing into the undergrowth. Had he already started running back to his colony? Despite Copper's previous reassurances there was a tightness in her chest that would not settle.

"Copper..!" She hesitantly called out, ears straining to listen for a reply. "Take me with you tomorrow..! I'll... I'll talk to Tulip..! They'll come too..!" Another moment of straining to listen before the sound of the backdoor opening caught her attention and she followed the call of one of her twolegs inside for the last time.
