QUAILSTEP
In the days that followed the battle with ThunderClan, Quailstep had tactfully avoided any interaction with Hawkstar. Not that she was commonly seen padding around after their leader - as she knew how to keep her feelings close to her chest - but there were simply... other things to do besides consider the complex political relationships at play.

And besides, as a warrior she had no right to ask about these sorts of things. But she still would watch Hawkstar each day, and realize that little tangle of affection and admiration in her heart was only growing stronger. They hadn't lost anyone to the most recent battle, but the tension was still there in all the wounded faces of her Clanmates. Perhaps...

They padded up to Hawkstar, dipping her head in recognition and deference. Quailstep may not be the most skilled warrior of the Clan, but she could at least try to help in her own way.

"Hawkstar?" she mewed. "I was wondering if you might want to go on a quick hunt with me."

LEADER OF SKYCLAN

.

Hawkstar tips her crown towards her approaching warrior, her good eye swiveling to meet their averted gaze. Her ear flicks in interest, a lazed gesture despite her otherwise perched form.

"Best to get going before sunset. It's been getting colder after dark, I'd hate to be caught freezing between you and a mouse. Neither sounds like a warm time," the king offers up a sly grin, as if this was a well established joke between the two of them. "Let's go."

Her tail flicks over her back, held high and gay as she marches away, off to the broader expansion of her kingdom, away into the greater territory where the last vestiges of prey had not yet scurried into their dens ahead of the coming cold weather. "Lead the way, this is your patrol."

QUAILSTEP
Quailstep blinks, a bit surprised at the joke. Her mind races as she tries to process the meaning and reason, but she gives up quickly in favor of acknowledging that she was granted permission to lead their two-cat patrol.

"Oh! Yeah, that would... let's go then," she mews, trying and failing to hide her flustering words.

Her pawsteps are light and quick as the pair make their way deeper into the territory, taking swift and cover glances at their leader to see the way the fading sunlight dapples over her coat.

They look quite handsome in this light, she thinks for a moment before feeling her ears heat up and returning her focus to their path. Her mouth opens as she scents the air, and her ears swivel.

Mouse, thrush, Clanmates. All the scents swirl in her mind, and she struggles for a moment to parse their distinctiveness.

To the left - that's where the mouse scent seems to be coming from. Quailstep drops to a stalk, moving through the grass slowly in search of her quarry.

Rolled a 7 for not talking like a fool in front of Hawkstar and 5 for tracking prey. Quailstep is locked in on absolutely nothing.

LEADER OF SKYCLAN

.

Hawkstar had not been given the name "Hawkeye" for her keen hunting ability. As king, she conveniently did not have to provide for herself as tirelessly as her warriors did. She was free to pick from the fresh-kill pile so long as the kits were fed - and how serendipitous it was that Hawkstar was friends with all of the caregivers. It was a win-win situation in the end: the caregivers were always given top priority under Hawkstar's reign, and so the king did not have to hunt for herself if she did not want to.

(and in truth, she never wanted to)

It's a wobbly realization that she has, that she doesn't remember the last she's been on a hunting patrol. She doesn't know the time she's been out with Quailstep either. Electric blue sweeps idly over the she-cat's form as she lowers herself, her eyes trained on some sound or scent that Hawkstar can't quite place. Instead, the pointed king watches with interest, following the focused flick of Quailstep's tail and the way her muscles tensed under her short coat.

QUAILSTEP

Quailstep was what she would later call "distractedly focused." With all her attention devoted to hunting in order to impress Hawkstar, she entirely failed to notice that her leader was currently not hunting and instead admiring her form.

They crouched lower, stalking this "prey" she believed to be there, and wiggled her rear as she pounced. Her paws struck the ground, sending a flutter of discarded downy feathers. The scent must've been a lark's abandoned nest, if the feathers and woven grass in the dip were any indication. Her ears slid back, clearly embarassed, and she looked to Hawkstar, her face covered in the little white fluffy feathers.

"Well, I promise I'm usually better at this," she mewed with a self-conscious laugh as punctuation. "Guess the nest must've just been abandoned, given how strong the scent was..." Nevermind that she thought she smelled mouse instead of lark. Their mind was simply... short-circuiting.

Rolled a 5 to notice Hawkstar checking her out, a 7 for stalking, and a 9 for catching her "prey."
