His body ached. Really, it did. He doesn't think he's walked this far his entire life combined, and he's kind of over it. Dark's eyes are narrowed as he stalks forward, heading towards where that old geezer of a kittypet had directed them. First, he (and his sibling) had made it all the way to the sea. Then they had to turn around and hike back the direction they came to follow after the cats that left the shipyard. His objective was to find his sister, and someone he knew had tipped him off that this was the direction that she had headed after tearing away from the gang, but who knows if it was the truth.

Terrible place, that shipyard, by the way. Stinks of fish rot and seawater filled with salt. He was NOT a fan of it, especially with his currently bruised pride. But no one needed to know that. Know that he had failed in succeeding as the leader that he wanted to be, failed at taking over where their parents had roamed and attempted to rule themselves. He blows a huff of hot air out as another reed smacks him in the nose, and he exclaims out loud- "Tides DAMN it." A paw reaches out, swatting at the plant, which returns to smack him on his scarred muzzle. A frown twists on his face, and if looks could kill, the reed would be in a billion little tiny pieces-

The scent hits him. A colony, one thickly bonded if the uniform scent was anything to go by. Dark falls silent, glancing back towards Umber with a look of quiet disbelief, then excitement, then a solidity of need. Sharp green eyes turned back forward. "Don't do anything stupid, yeah?" Dark grumbled out towards Umber, knowing that it was fruitless anyways. Umber could do what they pleased and Dark would probably roll over and let it happen. Anyone else, he'd be tearing them to shreds, likely so.

Anyone else brings him to thoughts of his sister. Rust. The whole reason they were here, chasing the ghost of the past. "Whoever's there, you can come out- I can smell you." Dark announces towards the scent. He's aware that their paws are itching at this colony's borders too, that he's encroaching on 'territory', but he doesn't give a fuck. "We're looking for our sister. Rust. Is she here or not?" He grunts out. Dark is tired, he aches, he'd LOVE a nap and a meal, but he's gotta ask first before they can split on another pointless endeavor.

FALLING FOR THE PROMISE OF THE
EMPTINESS MACHINE

.

She'd slipped away after her usual duties were finished, given Thunderpaw the day off as a break. And perhaps to soften the blow when Pikestar named her brother a warrior and not her at the upcoming meeting. She'd hate Russetfall for it, she was sure.

It was a strange thing, the anticipation of being disliked. It had never much mattered to the molly before. Hatred had been a shield as much of a tool for her in the past. It made clear lines of who could be trusted for the moment and who would sooner go for your throat when your guard was down.
'But it's not like that here.'

Something she often needed to remind herself despite the distance from her past.

Tides DAMN IT.

The hair along her spine bristles into sharp spikes at the voice. No fucking way. She'd recognize that growl anywhere. Had he brought the entire gang with him or was he alone? ...No, she could smell her other sibling too. This didn't reassure her at all but the life guard forces her fur to lie flat all the same.

It takes a heartbeat longer for her to compose herself before she steps out of the reeds with her tail held high despite her stomach feeling like it was twisting itself into knots. "...I haven't gone by 'Rust' in moons. It's Russetfall now, Night and..." Green eyes coldly drift to her other sibling, sizing them up. What were they here for? To try and drag her back to mother and father and the rest of the gang? Did they want revenge for leaving them all the moment she'd had a chance? "Umber... I'd say it's nice to see you both again but that'd be a lie. What do you want. This is Riverclan territory."

She cursed herself for going hunting alone, hopefully another clanmate would wander this way to back her up if this turned ugly.

With all admission, Umber was sick and tired of walking. Sent to one foul place to another that seemed utterly fruitless. She couldn't have been surprised if Dark had led them on a wild goose chase, but she was to hold her tongue, though that was only as successful as her brother's outburst which earned him a snort and a raised eyebrow. "Cursing the water's won't solve anything, Dark. Baring your teeth won't solve every issue." She rolled her eyes, but shot him a teasing smile.

She needed to keep herself sane with teasing the other, they had spent far too long on a seemingly useless search for their dearly missed Rust. Just the suggestion was enough to genuinely sour her expression, she wasn't sure how she felt at the prospect of intercepting the other if they might find her. But as Dark was rather easily frustrated by the reeds, Umber had to chuckle as she slipped past the reeds. Until, the other met them with an expression they could not ignore, pelt prickling slightly as they recognised the look in Dark's eyes. "Well, I suppose it would solve plenty of them." Umber sneered, it was strong in the air, the scent of other cats, and to their chagrin, it seemed they may not be alone. The pointers they had been given seemed correct this time and they were not certain how kindly they may be greeted.

But on their brother's addition, their face warmed with a smile that didn't quite meet their eyes. "Oh, come on now. You think so low of me?.. But, then again, no promises." Umber shrugged. They never promised in the past to withhold themself, though they supposed if they were to meet whatever strange clowder Rust had fallen into, they would have to at least give some good graces. Lest they get chased off if someone couldn't behave.

Though, Umber quickly tightened their lips as Dark's gaze affixed on something not far away, their instinct was correct, someone had found them. She let Dark approach first, but Umber's prickled fur flattened as instead a laugh of disbelief slipped from their maw. Oh, what cruel irony. "Would you look at that, Dark, you would think we had found ourselves a ghost." The tabby's eyes narrowed, approaching at the side of their brother and placing a feathered tail against his shoulder. "Come now, there's no need to bare teeth. Rust! Isn't it just lovely to see you." A purr dripping saccharine, mismatched eyes looking down at sharp green that shot back.

It was their sister's reaction that caught them off guard, face souring in confusion. "Russetfall?" Umber glanced to Dark with something unspoken but clung to the air. "It's one thing to have left like a spectre in the night, it's something else entirely to give yourself such an..." Umber held their tongue for a moment, they had grown use to their snark going uncontested, but unlike those drab cats of their collective past, Rust was no one to scoff at. "Interesting name..."

Umber, already exhausted from their travels sat on their haunches with an exasperated sigh. "Now that's no way to treat family, not a warm greeting or even an apology." They scoffed, shaking their head. "If you must know, the gang disbanded, there was nothing left for there. With them." Umber's lips pressed together adverting their gaze, looking about in a muted curiosity. "Though, it seems you have found yourself a new little clowder, I smell more cats than just you in this place, Rust."

It still felt wrong to him, that each and every council member agreed that it would be best to hold Thunderpaw back a moon from graduation. Not because she lacked the required skills necessary to pass, but because she was grieving. A concern was also raised as to whether or not they should hold back Galepaw as well, since they were siblings. To graduate one and not the other could be considered cruel from onlookers. However, the clan needed more warriors. Galepaw didn't seem to grieve as much as Thunderpaw. He was able to hold himself together a bit better or at the very least he was able to hide hid grief better. In any case, the council had decided in the end to graduate Galepaw. With the increase of mouths to feed and with Leaf bare right around the corner? Resources mattered more than ever.

However, he still couldn't shake the unease he felt. Speaking to the council again about the issue would only anger Frostmoth. He needed to trust in them, but it didn't hurt to ask Russetfall's true feelings about the matter right? After all, she was Thunderpaw's mentor. She knew the apprentice better than he did. Even if they shared a tender moment, he couldn't say with absolute certainty that he understood her. Maybe this choice was the wrong one? Of course, there was no way of knowing until it actually happened. Ugh. Everything's so complicated. In any case, he went off in search of the warrior.

Everything was going smoothly until two strange scents reached his nostrils. Before he knows it, he is bounding through the forest, hoping that he is not too late. Eventually he sees Russetfall in the distance with two other cats. Cats who aren't the kittypets from the campgrounds nor are they from any other clan. He doesn't hiss or chase them away. He has no idea what the situation is, but its clear that there is some discomfort from Russetfall.

She was his friend. A proud one that had a heart of gold, beyond the thorns shielding it. He takes his place by Russetfall's side. He takes a look at the pair of cats before them. While they aren't clan cats, their presence screams danger. It feels unwise to try and strike them.
"What business if any do you have with Riverclan? I'd suggest not taking another step."
