Pineheart dips into Pikestar's den, his pawsteps heavy. Much has happened that shouldn't have, and though he doesn't feel responsible for Adder's actions– those were Adder's fault alone– he does… worry, about Pike, however much the fact that he does may irritate him. But Pike, for all his grandstanding, is still just a kid in his eyes. A boy king. The conversation he must broach has been long coming, and he really should just get it over with. Hence him entering the leader's den, weary, exhausted.

"I did try to help Adder, you know," he says. His claws dig into the dirt, frustration already clawing its way into him. "I thought I could… I don't know. Steer him right. I saw too much of myself in him. Things you…" he pauses, glancing at Pike. He knows Iciclepaw has grown close to him, but… "A loss you've been lucky enough not to know. Losing a kit– that's a wound that never heals. And if you let it fester, it will turn you into something ugly and angry. Adder let it fester."

A beat. He sighs, looking out of the mouth of the den at the camp. "What you said at that council meeting after the heist, Pike, you know that was wrong. To hold the death of our clanmates against us like some gotcha moment, speaking of allowing cats freedom, and whatever else you said– I don't believe that's the leader you are, or the leader you want to be– it certainly isn't the leader I've always believed you could be." He looks back at Pike again, expression firm, but not unkind. Tired, maybe, and sad that it's come to this. "None of us handled the things that happened that night particularly well, but even so– hearing our leader speak like that… was unsettling."

"But at the gathering…" his expression turns ugly again, like the mere thought of it is painful. "You handled that better. Demoting Adder was the right thing to do. He… he shouldn't have even gone to the gathering, he should've stayed here. With Wavesong. But like I said– it festers. It makes you cruel. It makes you push everything away so that you'll have less to lose. And I am sorry I could not protect you from his anger."

To be honest he should be at the medicine cat den, but he needed a breather. When Jinglemoon rushed towards him when he got up, he simply explained that he would be in his den for some privacy. The only reason why his friend allowed him to be here was the promise of returning to the medicine cat den. I'm fine. He knows that too. I don't really need to stay in the medicine cat den, but he's worried. The least I can do is stay, so he can be a little more at ease.

Unfortunately, his need for solace is cut short. A silver paw is tracing the new scar on his face, as Pineheart's hulking frame enters his den. He should be surprised, yet he expected one of the council members to speak with him. Pineheart was admittedly the last cat on the list, considering their estranged relationship. In any case, the only source of indication that Pikestar is acknowledging the life guard's presence is a nod of his head. The silver paw that had been tracing his new scar now settles against the ground.

Pineheart begins with Adderfang. Though, the manner in which he speaks of the former life guard reminds him all too much of Wavesong. How they both want Pikestar to understand where the brown tom is coming from. Its something he's only started to dislike, but when Pineheart brings up how much of himself he saw in Adderfang... Green eyes narrow. What do you mean by that? His answer comes quickly. Kits. Pineheart had lost a child just as Adderfang had. Who they were or who had been Pineheart's mate was a mystery. When Pikestar had met Pineheart there was no mate. No child other than torrent who clung by his side.

I should go about this carefully.
"...I know. You wouldn't have kept me out of the medicine cat den if you didn't try to help Adderfang. Everything you've done was to help him."
None would deny that fact.
"I don't know what it's like to lose a kit. I never had one of my own, so I can't understand how ugly and angry it'll make me."
He's lost family, but it couldn't compare to losing ones own child. Although, is it truly a loss if he can't even remember the faces of his parents nor his siblings? Maybe it is, but its easier to believe otherwise.

The next topic of conversation is that council meeting. You didn't say much then, but I already knew there was much more you had to say about it. Guess this is everything you've had on your mind about it. A silver paw rubs against his neck awkwardly.
"Russetfall's already given me an earful about what I said at that dreaded council meeting. She may have not said that I was unsettling, but she said I was lucky that none of you decided to attack me right there and then."
By no means is he dismissing what the older warrior had to say about the council meeting. What he means to say is that he was already scolded long ago by a certain someone for what transpired at that awful meeting.

"At first... I'm ashamed to admit, but I didn't think I was wrong in saying what I said."
Before Pineheart can even think of retorting or leaving, he raises a paw while quickly tacking on,
"Please. let me finish."

A beat passes between them.
"When I was chosen to be leader... I wasn't told much admittedly. What Starclan ordered of me was to become leader and bring you all here, so we can become Riverclan. They also ordered me to give you clan names. No one is allowed to have the names they had before we came here and started our new lives. I... I was ordered by the stars to carry out their desires, but I didn't want to shove their desires on you all so suddenly."
Maybe that had been his first mistake. Not telling his council from the very beginning what Starclan decided for him. It was certainly biting him in the ass now with everyone in Riverclan feeling so defeated and exhausted. What transpired at the gathering was life changing to put it lightly. None of them will ever be the same. However, that was something to be addressed for later. How can I make this clearer for him?
"I... I wasn't ordered to make anyone happy. I could very well lead this clan as Hawkstar. With an iron paw, who punishes anyone who defies me. Only caring for those who will follow me without question."

Perhaps that helped put things in perspective. While Riverclan wasn't entirely friendly with their neighboring clan, a good bulk of them had less than ideal experiences with the other clan. One would think their standing would change with aiding some Skyclanners, but the other clan remained just as distant. This was excluded the rare times Hawkstar would inspect the borders, not sparing a glance towards them. Now, he wouldn't say the other was a terrible leader. She was simply one who shouldn't be messed with. Adderfang would have been sent running long ago had he been under her leadership. After all, Hawkstar would never tolerate his attitude among her ranks.

"It frustrated me. How you all couldn't see it. That I could've been so much worse. Instead, I chose not to. I didn't want to punish anyone for sharing their own opinions or for being who they are."

And now?

The silver leader can't help but sigh.
"I was wrong in saying that back then. I've known it for awhile. The council meeting I want to hold next is going to start off with an apology to all of you. Other than talking about Adderfang and what we should do now."
While he isn't sure if Pineheart is entirely reassured by his confession, all he can hope is that the older warrior can find some peace in knowing that there was going to be accountability. Of course, both of them knew that the topic of Adderfang would be brought up. There was no avoiding it. However, more than anything they needed to find a way to move forward together. An apology may not fix anything, but it was a start. Maybe our next meeting will be the one where we listen to each other. And I mean really listen.

The pain in Pineheart's words don't go unnoticed.

"It was never your responsibility Pineheart. To protect me from his anger. I knew it was a mistake for him to go to the gathering, maybe all of us knew it was a mistake... Still I let him go. I let him go because I didn't want to deal with it. You've seen how riled up he gets whenever I'm nearby. It felt like trying to prevent him from going would only push him to go anyway. Like you said, it festers. It was only a matter of time."
Truthfully, he didn't imagine that the brown tom would actually killed him. What he imagined as Adderfang simply yelling at him. There was no future where Adderfang could contain his anger or his ugliness. While Pikestar would be plagued by nightmares for moons to come of someone he once admired ruthlessly tearing into him, he could only weep in the solace of his den knowing that the ones most devastated by this event was none other than Wavesong and her kits. As much as he loathed Adderfang in the end, he didn't want to exile the former warrior for having different ideals. After all, he was loved by someone.

Whatever his relationship was with Pineheart didn't matter anymore. There was something much more important to do, and it was to reassure the older warrior that this was not his fault.
"You shouldn't blame yourself too much. Y'know, Russetfall warned me. She told me that this might happen, so it wasn't like I wasn't entirely unprepared. I only handled the gathering better because of Russetfall."
He is not going to say how the other council member had an inkling of what may happen. That was for her to tell if she trusted Pineheart with her secret.

Pineheart lets out another sigh listening to Pike's long needed explanation. Some of it is sound, some of it nonsense. But he lets him finish without interrupting, a peace offering of sorts in its own way. Praise for Russetfall isn't unexpected– Russet had been the only one not to turn their back on him.

"You could've been worse? What, you want a fucking prize Pike?" Pineheart says with a short bark of a laugh, shaking his head. "Congratulations– you're not an asshole. Well, you were, but at least you weren't a dictator about it. And you know damn well that if you had been, someone would've beat your ass sooner than this."

His tail flicks, beating against the wall of the den with a dull thud. "And Hawkstar? She isn't either. You didn't see the looks on their faces when they came to the gathering. Those weren't cats that were being forced, or cats who were scared, Pike– they went with her because they believe in her. They trusted she would get them justice, and she did. Can you honestly say you've inspired the same faith in you in anyone here? You don't even seem to have faith in your own choices, in your own council with how much you've been keeping from us. Not just this Starclan business, but the lives too. You didn't think being able to return from the dead was important to tell us?"

Feeling his annoyance building up, he digs his claws into the dirt and takes a steadying breath. "Fuck's sake, Pike. So you were chosen by Starclan– that's not enough. It won't be enough. You have to prove you can bear it. You can't go around getting into petty arguments and snapping at cats, let alone your council. You have to fucking– to think before you speak, for one. You said you chose your council for our differences, because you knew we'd disagree– but the first time we disagreed, what did you do? Lash out like a kit upset at being told to stop playing. I don't give a shit about apologies. Just do better next time."

Another deep breath. He looks at Pike again, steadier now, eyes holding the weight of the words he's going to say, hoping to impart some of it somehow onto Pike– it's a weight he must bear, and he must understand that.

"It is my responsibility. Of course it's my fucking responsibility. I am your council member, and you are my leader. If I have to, I'll put my life on the line to protect yours, all eight of them. That's what it means to be a leader, Pike. If you want Riverclan to follow you, you have to prove your cause is one worth dying for– that Riverclan is worth dying for. If you can't prove that, how will you prove it's worth living for in the first place?"

It really isn't meant to be funny, but Pikestar can't help himself from laughing with Pineheart.
"Hey, if you're offering~"
The moment of joy doesn't end there. The leader feels no shame or rage at being called an asshole. He was one. There was no denying it, just like there was no denying his ass would've gotten beat sooner. The imagery of the council taking turns smacking him around causes another round of chuffs to leave his maw. It's only when Pineheart's tail thumps against the den does he abruptly cease. Right. We have to be serious.

A correction is made in his assumption of Hawkstar. It is true that he didn't see the faces of the skyclanners present. The only thing he managed to catch wind of was the scent of blood and a seething Hawkstar before getting stopped by many cats during the gathering. He almost interrupts Pineheart, awkwardly closing his mouth as he lets the brown warrior finish speaking. A paw rub against his neck.
"I can't say I have. As for the extra lives business, I was going to bring it up, but then more pressing things happened that it slipped my mind. Compared to the lack of herbs and our council being a mess, it didn't seem like it was a priority to bring up at the moment. STILL. NOT SAYING IT WAS GOOD NOT TELLING ANYONE. I'm just saying that I didn't mean to keep it from you. I didn't think you'd all learn this way to be honest."
These are all poor excuses, but he hadn't considered not telling the council about his additional lives would mean he didn't trust them. It only made sense now, but at the time it genuinely seemed low priority to bring up. He's unable to tack anything else on, as the life guard proceeds by talking about his actions during the council meeting.

Pineheart didn't want any apologies. Bringing up Russetfall again would be unwise. As much as he would like to explain himself further about what happened at the last council meeting, they'd just wind up in circles. That is why, with a heavy heart he can only nod.
"I'll do better next time."
He can only hope that Pineheart doesn't take this horribly. If anything they have time to discuss it further. That is... If the older warrior was offended or needed a little more substance than a simple I will.

If anything, the sparse words aren't met with hate. Instead he is met with a steady gaze. Instinctively, his frame tenses. He trusts in Pineheart not to attack him, but there is something coming. Something that will crush him. Perhaps, even more than Adderfang ever could. The assumption is right. Pikestar can't mask the horror on his face when Pineheart practically vows to put his life on the line for him. One singular life to sacrifice for eight. He can't fathom it. However, he can't dwell on it. He's asked what is Riverclan's cause.

What was Riverclan's cause? It was a clan that existed before, but for some strange reason was gone. The original Riverclan that is. However, he wasn't told much about that Riverclan. If the stars asked him to become leader and remake Riverclan, then... Then why didn't they tell me about the old one? What did they value. What was their cause? They must have had something worth dying for. The lives, no the cats that resided within him were not all from Riverclan. They came from different clans and from different ranks. Only one was their former shipyard friend, Dewdrop. The life she had given him was patience. He can't help but chuff at the memory. Bravery, patience, determination, kindness, forgiveness, perseverance, redemption, protection, and trust. They gave me those lives, so does that mean its within me? He remembers Seabriar visiting him after he'd been killed by Adderfang. Did I lose you? Did I lose bravery?

The thought fills him with great sadness, but Pineheart's gaze and expression makes him remember that this is no time to be silent.
"Sorry! I was just remembering something. Nothing bad, I promise."
There was no good way to tell Pineheart what exactly he was laughing about, so he decides to press on before the older male can ask.
"I don't have a cause. I wasn't given one either. I don't know anything about the old Riverclan. What they believed in, cared about, or fought for. Even though I've spoken to one from Starclan, they don't tell me about it. They just give me advice."
It still stings knowing that the stars won't just spell it out for him. They don't have to tell him what he has to exactly, but they could answer a question at the very least. They didn't even have to be specific when giving out information about the past. Anything would be good, but it seemed like none of them were in the mood. He was met with silence or worse, they'll redirect and offer him guidance. Vague guidance. The silver tom can't help but sigh,
"We're not the old Riverclan, I know that, but it would be nice to have some sort of idea to look to for some guidance. A code. I heard that Hawkstar spoke of a code."

Unfortunately, he couldn't witness exactly what transpired with Skyclan for... Reasons. However, based on what others and now Pineheart told him, the Skyclan leader brought justice for her clan. Out of all the clans he knew hers was the most structured. To hear her warriors had complete faith in her made sense, along with a twinge of jealousy. Riverclan didn't believe in him even from the start, but it's not like he's done anything to prove them otherwise. He looks to the large life guard.
"Pineheart. I'm lost. I've never led anyone before. I... I don't think this is a cause, but I do have a wish for Riverclan. All I want is for everyone, all of us to rise together."
The last time he had said those words was before his demise. Adderfang refused to listen to him and now that he was given some time to think about the whole mess, he couldn't entirely hate the former life guard. Adderfang nearly lost his mate and his kits were ill, but even so... I have nice memories with you.
"You're right though. If I don't have a cause for Riverclan and prove it, we'll be worse off than we already are. With what happened with Adderfang things are even more of a mess than usual. We still haven't recovered from Shadowclan either. Our clan needs something to work towards. If I'm lost, then everyone's just as lost."

With something like a sigh of relief, Pineheart sinks back onto his haunches fully, his large frame hunched from weariness. It's like a weight has been lifted off him, somehow, now that Pike has finally at least admitted he doesn't know what the fuck he's doing. It's a step in the right direction. Being honest with Pine, with the rest of the council– it'll help.

"Hawkstar spoke of a code, yes," he replies with a nod. "Something passed down for generations, from leader to leader… It could help, it could be something to anchor us. Our relationship to Skyclan is not as bad as you seem to think– put yourself in Hawkstar's place. For generations, your clan has lived, laboured, fought, and you've done stars know what to earn your place as a leader, and then you run into us; barely a clan, no knowledge of this code you hold sacred. Wouldn't you be a little pissed off too? They probably think we're all a bunch of heretics. But if we approach them with respect, maybe they'll be interested in sharing this code of theirs. At this point, everyone, every single clan already knows we're a fucking mess. Adder took one of your lives in front of everyone, I shouted at him, he was banished, all in front of the other clans. Better to admit to the most reasonable of the bunch that we need a bit of guidance than try to pretend we're anything close to being a united front."

Pike's cause, his wish… it has a childish sort of ring to it, the sort of thing a kit would hope for. Still, it's a start. It's better than wishing for nothing. His tail twitches as he thinks, flexing his claws against the dirt again.

"We're a sorry bunch to be sure, but we've already proven we can work together. When the shelter collapsed, we all did our part to help, didn't we? And we followed you here, because we wanted to survive, because we wanted something better. Something more. I'm not saying we need some grand sense of purpose, but it would be nice to feel like we're actually fucking building something here. Something worth fighting for." A beat. "You've never led anyone before, and no one here has ever followed a leader. There'll be growing pains, and the trust has to be mutual– do you understand what I mean? You have to believe these cats can do this, can make this work, or they won't believe in themselves, never mind your ability to lead them. And you have to believe in yourself. You are not leading alone, Pike, even if you like to act like it. The council is here, the clan is here. We've been shaken up by what happened with Adder, but it won't break us if we don't let it. Use it. Our shelter has collapsed for the second time– how will you lead us out of the wreck? By closing your eyes and hoping for the best, or by facing it head on?"
