He doesn't get it.

A yawn splits from his mouth then clicks shut as he stares at camp. Rookpaw had declined any offer at attending a hunting patrol or a border patrol or whatever the hell these cats did. The only reason he was really here was because Mistpaw was here and seemed to want to stay. Not that he had asked or whatever, but Rookpaw didn't want to bother asking. At this moment, other cats would catch food, and if he timed it right, Rookpaw could hook a small fish without anyone noticing his laziness. Though, really, he could catch his own food if he wanted to.

But anyways, back to the topic in his head- yeah, he doesn't get it. This so called "paw" thing, being an apprentice, being assigned to a cat like a whole bunch of his "denmates" to be "mentored". He almost rolled his eyes out of his skull at that meeting and slunk away in the shadows, hoping to be forgotten. He doesn't believe he was forgotten, just not mentored yet, and thus felt a little sicker at the whole idea. Then, what about the whole being-picked-by-the-stars or whatever? Rookpaw sniffed at the idea, turning his head to continue observing the other cats in camp. Seriously, what a load of dung.

Adderfang waltzed across the stones leading back into camp, a fresh fish dangling in his jaws. Weary eyes scanned the clearing before making a beeline for the prey pile. His attention settled on Rookpaw briefly, who sat alone. The Life Guard's ears twitched as he considered the young tom's demeanor. Rookpaw's reluctance to engage in patrols hadn't gone unnoticed. The tom was still young and without the guidance of a mentor, Adderfang was hardly in a place to fill that role.

Even so… He was Mistpaw's brother. He could hardly afford to divide their training more than was necessary, but perhaps Mistpaw would find it enriching to have her brother along. Adderfang placed his catch in the pile, narrowed eyes settling on the yawning tom. His tail twitched thoughtfully as he stared at the dark tom. After a few moments he sauntered over, plopping down a few tail lengths beside the apprentice.

"Rookpaw," He honed in greeting, "Did no one ask you along for a patrol?" He was sure that Rookpaw was offered, but Adderfang wanted to hear what he had to say. The boy wasn't much different than him at that age... angry... unmotivated.

Spending time with his family, especially after the death of his mother, was the last thing on his mind. Pa dragging him along to learn the territory or to train was an irritation. Especially with how he wholeheartedly blamed the tom back then for leaving his mother behind.

"You know you're welcome to join Mistpaw and I until a mentor is assigned to you." Adjusting to RiverClan was difficult for all of them, but the young especially. Mistpaw was a gift compared to the difficulties he expected to face. She was mild-mannered and eager to learn. Adder was grateful for that.

𓆟 Chocolate ticked tabby w/ amber eyes. Peppered with scars. Deep gash across the right side of his face exposing one canine slightly. Missing left ear.
𓆟 Deep gravelly voice that might unsettle others.
𓆟 Would and will kill a man.
𓆟 Peaceful and healing powerplay permitted. For other powerplays, DM.
𓆟 Fur smells faintly of river reeds and damp earth.

Lavenderkit didn't quite understand the trials of being an apprentice. While Clan life is all she's known, it still seems like the cats around her are getting the hang of it. In her youthful mind, that doesn't make too much sense - after all, aren't her superiors supposed to be well aware and knowledgeable? If she asks them a question, they should know the answer. But that isn't the case. More often than not, she gets answers like, "Well, at the shipyard..." or "When I lived alone..." Nothing conducive to the life they live now.

This is a stunning example of it - Lavenderkit feels envious and frustrated that Rookpaw has paw latched to his name, yet never seems to want to go out. He's always just... there! If she had paw instead of kit then she would be racing out of camp at every opportunity! The only thing stopping her now is her obedience to her mothers and her minimal knowledge of swimming.

Adderfang asks the lethargic apprentice if he'd like to go out. Without missing a beat, Lavenderkit answers as if the inquiry was posed for her, "I can go with you, Adderfang! I know the way to - er - ThunderClan, I think! I can show you if you need help," the blue furred girl ruffles her pelt, discarding the meal she had been sharing with her siblings to approach the two.

Returning behind Adderfang, Mistpaw's own catch isn't as grand, but a smaller sunfish is clutched gently between fangs. They set their catch upon the pile, exhaling a breath of pride. They've been excelling under his watch and they can certainly feel it; their paws ache as do their legs, but thats just the price you pay for success. They can hear Adderfang speaking, but at first they just assume its to Wavesong until they hear their own name.

You know you're welcome to join Mistpaw and I until a mentor is assigned to you.

Mistpaws ears perk upwards as their gaze snaps towards their mentor and their... brother! Oh! They hadn't even noticed he was right there (and what a good sibling they are for not saying hello)! "Yeah!" its unusually excited, a rare show of emotion that breaks through their normal every day monotonous tone. They seem to realize that quite quickly, sweeping a plumed tail over the ground and clearing their throat. "Yeah. You can come." they nod, back to the flat tone they're used to. Lavenderkit pops up, causing Mistpaws ears to swivel back for a moment in slight displeasure. A kit? It's not that they hold disdain for any of their younger clanmates but they can already imagine Adderfangs attention being all upon her, because you'd have to be with a kit out in the open. The lack of learning they would get, spent on someone who wasn't even a paw yet...

An unusually burst of jealousy flares in their chest at that thought. This is their apprenticeship, that wasn't fair...! Their mouth opens, and then... Shuts. Nothing good would have come out of it, mean, maybe, and they're not quite sure they want Hazecloud, Lichentuft and Smokewreath on their tail for the rest of eternity... So instead they fix Adderfang with a stare, expression unreadable.

Frostmoth moves slowly through camp, checking and double-checking reeds, patrols, and the presence of kits. The daily routine is a comfort to him. When Adderfang returns to camp with a dutiful Mistpaw trailing behind, he straightens up a little. The pair are doing well in training. The deputy feels a bit excited to see one of the mentor-apprentice pairings already doing so well. "I'm sure he had a patrol to attend to this morning," Frostmoth chimes in, switching gears from his enthusiasm to look at Rookpaw. It's true that not every apprentice had received a mentor at once, but it hadn't been because of skill or personal bias. Still, he does not feel the need to reassure Rookpaw.

Mistpaw's displeasure at the idea of having Lavenderkit join them is not lost on Frostmoth, and he has to press a paw to his muzzle to contain the laugh that bubbles beneath it. Of course, he must be the bearer of bad news for the ever-excitable Lavenderkit: "Unfortunately you'll have to wait on patrolling until you're an apprentice." Frostmoth feels a bit bad for clamping down on her enthusiasm yet again, but hates to imagine all the things that could happen under his not-so-watchful eye. Whatever ability Hazecloud and Lichentuft have to keep up with their lively bunch must be some sort of superpower because Frostmoth cannot imagine being capable of the same.

"I need your watchful eye to see how many minnows we have in the shallows. You might be able to get a head start on your hunting training..."

Lavenderkit misses Mistpaw's initial jealousy - the blue she-kit, so focused on Adderfang and his suggestion to take on more than one apprentice for the afternoon, does not see how the grey-mottled moggy blooms with disbelief and frustration, nor how they deflate with the pressure of the unseen. In fact, Adderfang's true apprentice is hardly acknowledged at all, only seen when Frostmoth speaks and Lavenderkit happens to turn in the other's direction first. Her indignation is served initially to the once delighted apprentice, eyebrows pressing closer together as she turns again, just to find the bicolored deputy.

"You always ruin my fun, Frostmoth!" Lavenderkit accuses. Her jaw tenses and she stomps a paw, "I hope - I hope when I'm an apprentice, I never train with you. 'Cause you'd have me chasing minnows until I'm thirty seasons old!" There's no chance of her escaping now, she realizes too quickly. The child shakes out her pelt and blows out a raspberry, turning on her heel then to return to the nursery.
