Coyoteclaw had taken to visiting the campsite more and more; one part curious, two parts looking to steal something tasty from the twoleg dens. Today was no different, sure her durties were completed for the day, the molly snuck into the camp, sniffing about the place in search of the scent of meat. She had seen the kittypet food, little chunks of meat, that'd be a tasty meal to fill her belly before her hunt.

As she crept around, eyes narrowed as she kept herself low to the ground, she found herself approaching one of the twoleg dens. That's where they often stored the food or other little snacks; her mouth watered just at the thought. But as she circled the thing in search of an opening, something made her take pause. A little thing of wood, she didn't think much of it until she took another quick glance.

"Eugh!" The molly visably winced, taken aback. It wasn't merely a block of wood, but some strange visage of a cat. Wide eyes and bared teeth. It wasn't alive, obviously so, but she still found herself frozen in place, utterly unnerved. "Why is it looking at me...." She visably cringed, uneasy.

She wasn't a cat frightened easily, but the weird little visage of a cat made her feel strange. Flat hollow eyes staring back with teeth bared in a smile. It was unnatural, and she utterly despised it; her fur stood on end, making that evidence enough.

Prompt: Near one of the colourful pelts (tents) you notice a strange small cat. When you investigate, it quickly becomes apparent it's a wooden cat. You aren't sure to be flattered or unsettled by this grinning wooden cat. Will you take it?

PEBBLEDREAM ──

Back here again. Pebbledream has grown somewhat familiar with the layout of the twoleg camp by now, their initial apprehension of this place merely a memory. That being said, there is still always plenty of room for surprises every time they set paw here, and this instance is no exception.
They move to stand at Coyoteclaw's side when she grimaces with disgust, staring down at the small wooden cat with a steely frown of their own. Is this supposed to be similar to that weird twoleg made of hay that they'd investigated with Brook and Kuhli? Why are twolegs so fascinated with bizarre stuff like this??

"I don't think I've ever seen a cat smile like that in my life." They chuff, half amused and half deeply disturbed by the object that sits before them. The way its lips are curled back, its fangs peeking out on either side... "It's like if a cat had a twoleg's face." The mental image is stuck in their mind now, and their frown deepens. Maybe the twoleg who made it had never seen a cat smiling before? But there are plenty of kittypets around here, so that doens't make sense at all. Pebbledream sighs; no matter how much they dwell on it, they'll never understand why twolegs do anything they way they do. Honestly, what purpose does this wooden cat even serve? Just... decoration? They suppose they could be on board with that if it wasn't for the fact that it looks so off-putting.

Fear isn't the first thing that crosses Crescentpaw's mind as he stares at the strange little monster of a cat. Unbreathing and unblinking but still a cat in it's own way, it was weird but it drew curiosity more than anything else. Squinting at the thing she turns her gaze to Coyoteclaw, who had first discovered the fake cat. "Do you think it can hear you?" After all, he isn't solely convinced that it can't be living, even if it's not breathing. Maybe it's a StarClan thing, that whole starlit ghost thing never really made sense to her anyways so who's to say that this couldn't be part of that? At least Pebbledream finds some humour in it, maybe it was a little harsh of him to think but if he had seen both of the warriors seemingly cower in the face of something so small then he'd had lost faith entirely.

Hesitantly he looks to his mentor, trying to discern any feelings from her own angular expression. If he could be so bold as to try and claim to know her at all, she might think that she looks contemplative over what ever this is. Though he is convinced that this couldn't be anywhere near his own level of curiosity. "Can we take it back?" She asks suddenly, head snapping up to look at the others in this group. "Maybe someone at camp knows more about it?" there is an edge of desire in his tone. Intertwined with a plea, nothing has ever really grabbed at his more kit like curiosity these days. Given this golden opportunity to hold onto that feeling again Crescentpaw finds herself ready to reach out with urgency.

Kuhli had been distracted looking around the campground when Coyoteclaw and the rest of their clanmates discovered the wooden figurine of a cat. They were nosing at remains of some food packaging, trying to see if there was any food left, but unfortunately, there wasn't. That's when they noticed their clanmates staring at something on the ground.

Kuhli approached just as Crescentpaw spoke, and chuckled - not in a condensating way, just amused. "It's just something the twolegs like to keep." they explained. "My caretakers had several - I think it reminds them of us. It's sweet, in its own way."

Kuhli remembered how long it took them to recognise the little statues as cats, but when they did, they found it impressive. Twolegs were sometimes so creative and sentimental, keeping trinkets like that. They understood, of course, they also used to own a lot of thiings they cared about. But that was all in the past now... Looking at the wooden figurine, Kuhli felt strangely emotional. It reminded them of their former caretakers, the elders too sick to care for them anymore. All they ever wanted was what was best of them and they couldn't fault them for that. They loved each other with all they could.

"We can take it back with us." they stated, hoping others would agree. "But it doesn't do anything besides looking pretty. Or creepy, to some."

The molly was slightly reassured by the appearance of more cats, it wasn't as if she was in danger by oh Starclan did she not like the freaky little figure...

She turned to talk with Pebbledream, only for something the grey cat said to make her visibly recoil. "Oh it does have a twolegs face!" The chimaera grimaced. She wasn't frightened easily, but the thing was utterly unsettling. One of Wavesong's youngesters, Crescentpaw, spoke up, staring curiously. "It's certainly not alive, it has no scent, it's just got fake eyes..." It was reminiscent of a butterfly, of all things. Many had weird, spotty patterns on their wings that looked like smoothed-out eyes. Curiosity in her youth had confirmed they were not true eyes, and these seemed all the same.

But as the apprentice continued, he uttered something that made her fur stand on end. "Why on earth would you want to bring it with us?" Her fur prickled, looking around to the rest of the patrol, hoping someone would agree. But, to her chagrin, Kuhli nodded in agreement, an almost forlorn gaze on their brow. Coyoteclaw tightened their jaw, looking back to Crescentpaw who seemed... Excited? She hadn't seen the sparkle in the eyes of the apprentice since her siblings had been born.

Promptly realising she was outnumbered, and feeling bad at raining on the joy of her clanmates, she gave a small huff. "We can take it back, just-" She looked back for a moment, grimacing, before swallowing her pride. "Just don't leave it hanging around to stare at folks, alright?" The molly relented; she seemed to be the only one opposed to the idea of the thing, but she wasn't exactly ecstatic at the idea of the thing hanging around. But of all cats, Crescentpaw deserved something that brought him a little bit of joy. Starclan knows she wasn't going to be the one to shoot that down.

Truly, Pebbledream would have to agree with Coyoteclaw - they're not too keen on the idea of bringing it back to stare soullessly at them from within camp, but if Cresentpaw likes it, well...

"It wouldn't put us in any kind of danger to bring it back, so if you are truly fascinated with it, I suppose it wouldn't hurt to take it home." Even their usually-stoic demeanor shifts slightly at the thought of it, but oh well. If Pebbledream has any kind of weakness, it's the whims of youngsters, their eyes so full of life and curiosity... it's best to nurture that for the sake of the apprentice's progress as she becomes a warrior. "I second Coyoteclaw, however - it might be best to keep it with you near your nest, rather than out in camp. Some cats might find it off-putting." They can hardly imagine just one of these things out and about - Kuhli had mentioned that their twolegs had several of these things. Eugh. For what is not the first time, Pebbledream is very glad to be wholly unfamiliar with life as a kittypet.

The ocean is in my soul,
And it's pulling me back to shore.
I'm letting go of the weight that's dragging me down.

.

Wavesong bounded after her child with a light, melodic laugh, brushing her flank playfully against the white-furred youngster before tossing them a wink. " Ye got yerself some good eyes there, aye? " she praised, voice warm as river-sun. Her gaze drifted to the little wooden figure nestled in the grass, and she tilted her head, studying its carved, too-wide grin. " Hmm... " With great concentration, she attempted to mimic the figure's stretched smile, pulling her lips back, baring her teeth just a touch, only to fail spectacularly. Her maw simply wasn't built for such nonsense.

A soft snort escaped her and she shook out her whiskers, amused at herself. When her eyes lifted toward Crescentpaw again, however, the amusement softened into something deeper, something aching and proud all at once. Stars, he was getting so big... Soon she'd stand among RiverClan's warriors, strong and shining like the currents themselves. Her heart skipped at the thought. With a gentle breath, she leaned in and brushed her cheek against hers, lingering for a heartbeat longer than usual. She wanted to hold these little moments close, every heartbeat, every laugh, every step her children took before they grew beyond her reach.

" Ye can take it back with ye, guppy... " she murmured to him, pulling back with a wink, her voice thick with fondness. Then she lifted her head and offered a warm, welcoming smile toward Kuhli, Pebbledream, and Coyoteclaw. " Don't ye worry yer fur off Coyoteclaw! Cres here will make sure t'leave it outta yer view! An' if it magically appears in yer nest, I would never have somethin' t'do with that. " she teased lightly, a mischievous grin touching at her maw for a second.

MEDICINE CAT

DINGO

"I say we take it back and hide it in Pikestar's den~!" Jinglemoon had found himself following along after his clanmates back to the twoleg camp again today, the potential to catch some leftover food was incredibly tempting... But today they had come across a wooden thing that was shaped like a cat. He had been just joking about placing it in the leaders den of course... But the reaction would be funny to see he'd give an amused twitch of his whiskers before adding "Or leave it by the border to scare off any potential trespassers" It had been successful at scaring some of the cats here or at least unsettling them, surely the same could be said of the other clans or rogues?

Wavesong's teasing made him chuckle, poor Coyoteclaw was bound to wind up with that thing near their nest at some point if the cats really did bring it back to camp with them, he'd think about it for a few heartbeats though before looking to Kuhli, "The twolegs won't miss it, right? They won't come looking for it if we were to take it back to camp?" The last thing they needed right now was twolegs searching the territory especially for something taken mostly for the fun of it, but surely this little wooden figure wasn't that important that they'd go searching for it? They had left it out here unattended after all!

The reactions were mixed for sure, making Kuhli forget all about their melancholy at once. Some of their clanmates seemed nervous about the thing, though Kuhli could not find it creepy - twoleg creations were something they were used to from a very young age - while others seemed to find it fun or even fascinating. It was interesting to see the way such a simple object garnered such differing reactions.

The medicine cat's question tore Kuhli out of their own thoughts, and they hummed. "Hmmmm... good question." they thought for a moment. "I'm not sure - twolegs are vastly varying. Some don't care about their possessions while others cherish them dearly. But..." they looked at the statue. "they are forgetful creatures. I would think they'd sooner assume this item lost than go seeking it far into the territory. Especially when they've just left it laying here."

Kuhli hoped they were making sense - Jinglemoon had asked them as if they were an expert on twolegs, when they were merely a formet kittypet - raised by one elderly couple, only meeting other twolegs when they visited or when Kuhli wandered the outside streets. That was hardly much experience.
