Quailstep padded down the slope, past Lightning's Grasp, and down to the river. It was hard to believe that the chilly stream was not so long ago a place where she and her Clanmates splashed about in greenleaf, enjoying the cool of the water on their pelts in the oppressive heat. Now, with leafbare approaching, frosty chips of ice clinked against the shore before melting at the touch of the ground, still warm enough to prevent a true frost. Still, the chill from the water posed a treacherous threat to any who may dip their paws in - the air itself was still cold and illness coming at a time like this was not something the Clan needed.

"Be sure to walk with caution at the water's edge," she warned the patrol. "Wet paws could lead to a chill, and Swallowbreeze has had enough on her paws lately to deal with more sick warriors."

Qauilstep jumped lightly to the edge of the stream, dipping her head down to lap at the cold water. Her whiskers twitched at the crisp taste on her tongue, and she shook her head after.

"And be polite to any RiverClanners we may encounter. Remember that Flowercloud met with them last moon to discuss the warrior code - any questions should be treated as a learning opportunity, not an attack on our way of life." Quailstep hadn't met many of the RiverClan cats, aside from the few at the Gathering, but with Brightnose's entrusted secret and Flowercloud's patrol having been well-recieved by Pikestar, she had no intention of causing any sort of trouble with the warriors across the water.

as cold rain falls over your pelts- you begin to wonder how they swim in this water without freezing...

Mallowpaw hummed quietly as he hopped happily behind his mentor. The weather was growing colder every day, but Mallow hardly seemed to notice --- His fluffy pelt a beacon of warmth against the biting cold of the season. He knew his mentor was recently made a sun guard, good for her. Mallow felt a rumble of pride in his throat, knowing that he was apprenticed to someone like them. Mallowpaw had been on a few patrols with his mentor, but honestly this felt different. It was friendly, just refreshing the border between themselves and Riverclan.

Mallowpaw had never met a Riverclanner before, he paused his steps for a moment, watching as his mentor took a slow lap of the cold water of the stream. Is it true they swim like fish? Maybe they're part fish! Maybe they even smell like fish! Or they have fish scales under their pelts! Their head swelled with all the possibilities, he could hardly wait to meet one of them. His mentor made sure to tell the other warriors that they were to treat them kindly if they came across any, which they met with an enthusiastic nod. Their mentor certainly didn't have to tell them twice! It was always so exciting to meet cats from other clans after all! They had met a few of them at gatherings, Thunderclanners, Shadowclanners... they were all different! No one smelt the same! It was so cool! He bounded happily beside the stream, feeling the chill of rain hit his pelt.

SkyClanners!

Iciclewish's whiskers twitched as he padded forward with all the grace of a cat trying very hard not to trip over his own paws. The approaching silhouettes grew clearer with each heartbeat, SkyClan cats, unmistakably so. For a moment, Flowercloud's calm voice echoed in his mind, her lessons about the code, about conduct and respect. A warrior does not need to kill to win. Her conviction had stuck with him, and so had the memory of the younger warrior at her side, her child, right? They had both seemed so sure. So steady. He wished he were steady.

Trying to summon that confidence, Iciclewish straightened his posture, puffing his chest... For a whole two seconds before deciding he probably looked ridiculous. He deflated with a soft frown. The old prickle ran up the back of his neck, the one that whispered don't mess up, don't mess up, they're watching. His paws kneaded the earth in tiny, nervous motions. Should he really approach first? What if he accidentally offended them? What if they thought RiverClanners were rude? What if they attacked-- no, no, SkyClan didn't just attack anymore. Right? Right. Flowercloud had said that had been a regrettable moment...

He swallowed. Stars, this was so much easier when Pikestar used to stand behind him. But he wasn't an apprentice anymore. He was a warrior, Iciclewish. His own name. His own paws. His own voice. So he stepped forward... One paw, then another, until he stood at the border, tail low but not tucked, eyes bright but unsure. " Hello! " he blurted. Oh stars. Was that squeak really his? He sounded like he was on the verge of bursting into tears or announcing a mossball game.

His fur immediately fluffed with mortification, heat rolling across his cheeks. He cleared his throat, tried again, voice cracking less this time. " U-uh... Uh... H-hello. Yes. " Oh this was going even worse. This was horrible. He should've stayed away! " Uhm... Sunny... Sunny day, yes...? " His ears flattened as he realized this was perhaps the least intimidating greeting he could've chosen. But he stood his ground anyway, looking at the SkyClanners with wide, hopeful, horribly anxious blue eyes, doing his absolute best.

Quailstep kept an eye on her apprentice - he was full of energy, but it was unlikely he'd purposefully disobey her instructions. Still, he did walk close to the water, and she did not need to bring back a sopping wet apprentice to camp.

There, across the water, a RiverClan cat approached. They looked young - perhaps a newer warrior? Pikestar had said their ranks had swelled at the Gathering. His nerves were clear but endearing, and Quailstep stepped forward to the water - though not too close - and dipped her head to the young cat.

"Decent enough weather, yes," she mewed teasingly, looking up at the sky as it began to drizzle and the sun slowly crept behind the clouds. They wondered how RiverClan fared with water from the earth and sky - did rain bother them at all? "I hope things are well in RiverClan. The name's Quailstep - this is my apprentice, Mallowpaw." The other members of their patrol could decide whether or not to introduce themselves on their own terms.
OOC: tagging @Iciclewish @Mallowpaw

Mallowpaw's eyes sparkle at the white tom across the river, if he wasn't trying to be a good apprentice, he probably would have flung himself closer to inspect them closer. He stayed close to his mentor, practically vibrating with excitement as they looked across at the Riverclanner.

It did not even register to it that Quailstep had already introduced them, declaring loudly enough that all of Riverclan could likely hear them. "AND I'M MALLOWPAW!" He was still vibrating next to his mentor, small fluffy paws being lapped at by the cold water of the river.

"Is it true you guys swim like fish?!"
They exclaimed, still looking at the warrior that had not yet introduced themselves. "That squeak you did was really funny! Are you part mouse?" He didn't realize that was somewhat rude, the smile on his face still present as he looked at the stark white tom.

Iciclewish's nervousness was not something Silverspirit found easy to understand. Unburdened with an anxious temperament like that possessed by the young warrior, and ignorant of the toll it exacted upon the individual, the tabby was unable to suppress a flicker of bafflement as he drew up alongside his pale-coated Clanmate. The level of unease the younger RiverClanner seemed to be experiencing seemed entirely disporportionate to the situation at hand, at least to Silverspirit's relentlessly rational mind. Though patrols encountering one another always had the potential to become fraught, or even downright dangerous, their relationship with SkyClan at present wasn't lending itself to conflict. Besides, the SkyClanners who had spoken thus far seemed more than willing to be cordial, which Silverspirit appreciated - though Mallowpaw's exuberance was a little surprising. It reminded him, not unfavorably, of his former apprentice - or, at least, when she had been younger.

"Sorry to disappoint, but Iciclewish is fully feline. I'm Silverspirit; it's good to meet you both." The striped tom spoke up, green eyes moving thoughtfully over the SkyClanners before he inclined his head in greeting. "We do swim, yes, though not like fish." A rare glimmer of amusement appeared in Silverspirit's face as he leaned in slightly. "Would you like to know why?" He whispered to Mallowpaw, and as soon as the snowshoe indicated some kind of assention, he would say in mock-confidential tones: "Fish get caught, killed, and eaten."
