it feels like burning... she shoulders down the ache of the fire under her pelt in favor of duty, slinking from the shroud of her den to wince against the blinding sunlight. her head rings with the thrum of sharp, persistent pains, bitten back with a heavy inhale and an equally weighty exhale. she doesn't draw more than a few strides from the shadow of the half-collapsed tree trunk that she would normally hoist herself upon, glancing around as the world moves in a bleary smear before finally coming back to clarity. "ThunderClan, I ask for your attention," and even she can tell the way her throat sounds parched.

she straightens her spine, squinting against the heaviness of the bags under her eyes to make herself centered in the moment. "I... unfairly... burdened Murkyfang with a role that she felt ill to refuse... I've been made aware of my mistake... the carelessness of my request... and I relieve her of her duty as Storm Guard. She has been a great asset to ThunderClan and will continue to be... where she is happier... and not drowned by her responsibilities." she searches for the high-strung she-cat, offering the slightly bow (a dizzying action that requires many seconds to recover from), "Thank you..."

it did not leave her with the abundant support structure she craved... one ramshackled together in the face of so much loss. but that could be fixed... divined even, if StarClan were willing to offer some guidance. maybe even Serpentberry would lend Juniperstar her ear one more time... would choose to use a gentle tongue... or maybe even Brightpetal had made notes of who he trusted to fill that space... weren't these guards his just as much as they were hers?

"Brownfur... please take care of Rimepaw's training... and Graybird... if you'd please watch after Dreampaw... I imagine you'll both have your paws full but you can handle it." a moment of brevity, a lightness to be speaking to those she new and could rely on.. but it is short lived, as always.

"One last thing," she meows, articulating more carefully as she lifts her gaze to find a too-grown kit in need of enrichment. "Boarkit... I think you're ready to be an apprentice... to start learning how to hunt and fight to protect yourself and ThunderClan both." her nose lifts heavensward, furrowing her brow against the light as it threatens to disorient her completely. "In accordance... with StarClan's will, I hand up your old name to them to be forgotten... and in return... to recognize you as the warrior-in-training that you are... I name you Boarpaw..." her jaw clenches, feeling the grit of her teeth as they slide into place against each other before looking back to Boarpaw. "And I'll be your mentor."

it was questionable how much training she could offer the young soul when she had to worry over Asterkit still but... she'd never shied from the overwhelm of duty and wouldn't do so now either. she'd... just take today to rest and then tomorrow they could attend to all the many 'firsts' Boarpaw was probably waiting for...

————————————— The melody sings what the words can't say. ✦

The little too large kitten knew he didn't have to sit in for meetings, but it just felt... Respectful. Juniperstar had been kind enough to welcome him and his siblings into the clan. He settled in quietly, paws tucked carefully together as he sat not far from Dewshine and Copperstorm. He wondered what the meeting might be about, he had heard whispers of other clans, something about river and wind? Maybe this was about them, if they were real, of course. He knew Shadowclan lived on the other side of the Thunderpath that they had all been dropped off at, but it seemed like they were a... Taboo subject almost.

His bright eyes cast to Juniperstar, it wasn't hard to see that the leader seemed weary and tired. Her voice was strained, almost. His ear flicked. Boar wasn't naïve to the misfortune the clan had seen. You hear a lot when you have nothing else to do but play and sleep.

He listened, silently. Gaze following at the cats, the leader mentioned, they had grown familiar with names and faces now. Most of them he hadn't spoken to, but Hopekit and Dewshine had helped put names to each cat. While there was a weight to Murkyfang being relieved of Storm guard duty, he smiled at least at the apprentices. What an honor it must be to get their new mentors.

The meeting seemed simple enough, the leader not wanting to strain themself but needing to get things in order. It seemed as if it would end on a final quick note, until- "Boarkit." Their fur bristled. He looked up, realising she was already looking directly at him. For a moment, there was a nervous feeling; it wasn't as if he had done anything wrong but the attention made his fur stand on end.

But that washed away as they spoke further, eyes glittering, realising they were being made an apprentice. In that moment, their mind raced through the list of cats they had grown to know in the clan, trying to remember who had an apprentice, who could be their mentor. But their jaw grew slack at the final addition as Juniperstar gifted him his new name, naming herself his mentor.

It was surreal, really. They always felt a little outside of the goings on in Thunderclan, their only family their siblings. Having to learn everything from the ground up in just over three moons was dizzying when all they knew was the mill. But now? It all seemed to have flipped on its head.

It was hard for Boarkit- Boarpaw to hide the grateful smile on his face. Yes, there were eyes on him now, but the pride in his chest was so much stronger than that. He would have to thank his mentor once his training started, but he knew it may be a little while, given her exhausted state. Boarpaw didn't mind waiting. Everyone else gave him patience, so of course, he needed to give it in kind.

Hound's tail twitches as he stops what hes doing, swinging his head towards Juniperstar when she calls for Thunderclans attention. He abandons the mess of twigs and lichen in favor of gathering forwards, picking the moss out from under his claws with his free paw. She doesn't look great, but its not his place to comment on, and she certainly doesn't sound great, but again...

First order of business is the rescinding of Murkyfangs position, which makes his brows raise every so slightly. Briefly, he wonders why she'd accept in the first place, why she waited so long to say anything- or maybe she didn't, and Juniperstar came to the conclusion herself...? Again. Not his place to ask or comment on. He twitches an ear and shifts his weight on to his good side. Next order of business is reassignments, which he has no qualms of. He thinks both Brownfur and Graybird are capable warriors, though it would be amusing to see the latter work with Dreampaw. He has a much more... subdued personality than the streak of fire he would be mentoring.

The last order of business is a new apprentice. Boarkit becomes Boarpaw, mentored by... Juniperstar. Normally he wouldn't have any complaints, but as he glances up, he thinks... She looks tired, exhausted, even beyond that. His lips purse together, and if Boarpaw would look around in the crowd, he'd offer them an encouraging nod. At least it was good news again this meeting.

She doesn't sound well.

That's the first thought that strikes him as the meeting is called, a frown pressing to his face as he stops next to Ghoststrike, baby blues tilting towards their leader with a shadow of concern in them. And the longer that he looks on, she looks exhausted. Is she sick too? Concern coats him, but he frowns gently. There's no sense in rushing up there to order off the stone. They aren't... friends, they weren't ever. Not after that argument. Yes, he's still carrying that grudge. A grunt leaves him as he sits next to Ghoststrike, ears flicking as he stares on. Vision shifts towards Murkyfang, and a quiet noise of agreement to her role of being-an-asset leaves his throat.

Thunderflash's eyes do catch, however, the great time it takes for Juniperstar to move. He has half a brain to say something to his friend, but he takes a moment to consider that Ghoststrike already knows. Just leave it alone, Thunder. It doesn't matter to you. A voice snaps at him, and he exhales slowly, straightening up to peer up at her. Apprentices are handed mentors, and his teeth grits together as he is, once again, not given one. How embarrassing, to yet again be the only council member without an apprentice.

Juniperstar apprentices one of the kits that was brought back from the border, and that is a bit of a lighter note- aaaand right to her, huh? A frown finds his face briefly as Juniperstar volunteers herself to mentor that kit, and he grumbles quietly, a paw pressing against the ground. "Y'know wha'-" He utters, then tilts his head back. "Congra's, Boarpaw!" He calls, no trace of bitterness in his voice. No, this is a landmark for that kit- now apprentice- to make it to a new stage of his life. Especially after that rough start.

I WON'T SMILE, BUT I'LL SHOW YOU MY TEETH

The call echoed through camp, and while other cats began to trickle toward the center clearing, Ghoststrike lingered a moment longer at the edge of camp. Tucked into the long shadow of a bramble wall where the sun couldn't quite reach, he waited patiently for the other cats to finish passing by. It wasn't that he minded showing up, he just didn't feel the need to get swept up in the mob of curious and excited faces swarming toward their leader.

Eventually though, he rose and padded in, taking his usual spot toward the back where he had eyes on the group ahead of him and didn't have to worry about who was doing what behind his back.

When Thunderflash slid in beside him, Ghost's ear flicked once in acknowledgement, but he didn't look over. He didn't need to– could already feel the tension in the tom beside him as Juniperstars voice cracked. Too hoarse. Too dry. Combined with the shadows beneath her eyes and the stiffness in her movements, it was getting harder to ignore. And while his white mask remained impassive, the thought stuck behind his ribs like a burr.

Soon, something would have to give; the sickness, or Juniperstar herself.

Murkyfangs resignation didn't surprise him. The cat never looked comfortable in the role, and he made no sound at her dismissal, only watched from the back of the crowd as their leader bowed her head and swayed slightly from the motion. Even from a distance he caught it.

His jaw shifted– not in judgment, but observation. Things were changing again, and not all of it felt stable.

Apprentices came next, and the towering male made mental notes on who was paired with who, faltering only on the last one. Boarkit. Dark amber pools scanned the crowd, finding the oversized kit near the front. They looked startled at first, then proud, but when Juniperstar named herself their mentor, Ghoststrikes brows ticked downward just a bit.

Was now really the time to be giving herself an apprentice? She could barely stay upright.

He didn't say anything about it though. Didn't share the glance Thunderflash almost certainly wanted from him. He just sat, still and quiet, tail curled neatly over his paws.

There would be work to do. He already knew it.
