Dawnkit
status: Wary
She creeps closer and closer to the medicine den. Her mother needs medicine, refuses to seek help because she doesn't trust Serpentberry, but Dawnkit has to do something. She doesn't know anything about the art of medicine, doesn't know what the herbs do, doesn't even begin to know what to look for. But she has to try. She has to. If something happened to her mom, or her sisters? She'd never forgive herself. She creeps nearer the entrance, staying in the dark, hoping no one is there. She hasn't seen the medicine cat or apprentice enter or leave, nor has she seen the kits, but that doesn't mean anything. They could still be within the den and just not left in the time she spent watching. She certainly hadn't seen them anywhere else. She has barely put one paw over the threshold, hardly confident in what she's doing, when movement from within near startles her. She doesn't jump or run, she merely freezes. Waits. Who was it?

The figure she finally lays eyes on is thankfully not the one she had been mostly avoiding. It's one of the kits. Was this one named Falsekit? A strange name. "Oh. It's just you." She relaxes her shoulders but doesn't stand. She creeps a tiny bit closer. "Hey you like...live here right? Ya know anything about herbs? Lookin' for somethin' for like...coughin' and aches. Ya wouldn't happen to know which one did that? Like..one of the big leafy green ones maybe?" They all were big and leafy green to her. She's not entirely sure if that was helpful information. She squints at Falsekit as she waits on an answer. Hopefully they knew something and she could get in and out really quick without being seen by literally anyone else. She didn't want to push her luck and she was already sort of dreading being where she was. But her mom needed help so she'd tough it out, get the herbs, and get out. Simple as that. She just...needed to figure out which herb it was she was looking for.

and every step i choose to take begins to set the world aflame

  • Taking place before the death obviously. Wait for one of @serpentberry @FALSEKIT
Optional prompt for bingo: 55 try to theorize about an herb's particular use without asking
  • DAWNKIT She/Her A cinnamon tortie point with large paws and anger in her veins. She is highly protective of her siblings and is strangely distrustful of anyone that isn't family, possibly stemming from her mother's paranoia.

The medicine cat den still felt sterile, despite it becoming their new home. The outside felt natural in its imperfections, tangled scents of old musk and blossoming mildew like a nostalgic perfume of home. This place, however, was cleaned with the sacrecy that befitted a shrine and not a living space. The fawn-coated kitten stalked around Serpentberry's domain, almost like a fool blinded by their own ignorance, though calculated pawsteps sang more of curiosity than idiocy. They exhibited great care to not disturb Serpentberry's meticulous counts, traipsing tenderly around the calico's creations. The medicine cat did not breathe fires of wrath, burning him to the bone, but he could never truly let his guard down around his "mother." If his mother were not spared, then surely, they would be next. A figure suddenly blocked the light that seeped in from the entrance, and Falsekit froze completely, as if encased in ice within a terribly unnatural position. They hadn't been doing anything wrong, they don't think, but they stopped as if they had just been caught in the act of some horrible misdeed. Upon their owlish gaze catching upon a kit's form instead of an adult's, they loosened bunched muscles and stood upon straightened limbs.

"Um... Hi." Falsekit mewed with uncertainty, greyish-blue eyes staring straight into Dawnkit's own gaze. The tortoiseshell point crept a little closer, but Falsekit did not stir, instead standing unnaturally statuesque. What does she want? Is she looking for Serpentberry? Ears flicked as they listened to Dawnkit, finding that she only wanted to know about the various leaves and stems that were hoarded in the den. "Serpentberry knows more than me. I'm not interested in that." He plainly stated, as though the medicine cat who graciously took them in meant nothing to them, as though he scoured for any reason to not consider her their caretaker. After a considerably uncomfortable silence, they spoke again. "... I can help you find it, if you want. It'll be in here, probably." They said with a monotone drone, as though any emotion had been sanded down, left with nothing but an impossibly-smooth stone in their mouth. Without further ado, they began to visually scan over the herb stores. There were many big ones, many leafy ones, many green ones... and many that fit that entire description. You should be more specific. He inwardly muttered.

Copperstorm's golden eyes lingered on the two kits, sharp but not unkind, as he assessed the situation. Dawnkit and Falsekit's scheme was audacious, certainly.... But reckless. His tail flicked once, betraying a mix of irritation and worry. He had came on by to ask their medicine cat whether she needed another herb patrol, but instead had found himself with a risky situation. " I'd not do that. " he meowed, his voice firm but calm, ears twitching at the distant rustle of the camp. " As clever as your plan sounds, there's a real risk you'll grab the wrong herb, or worse, make the situation more dangerous. " He gave a slight tilt of his nicked ear, scanning their faces for understanding.

The three kits under Serpentberry's care... Falsekit, Thornkit, and Faithkit, they were already in precarious positions, separated from their mother and trying to navigate a world far larger and sharper than themselves. Copperstorm's thoughts softened momentarily at the sight, but he quickly reminded himself of the weight of responsibility. The kits' safety was his concern, even if it wasn't his responsibility to micromanage their every move. " You're best off asking Serpentberry for the medicine you might need. " he advised, his tone measured. " She knows best. Anything else could be… risky. "

A soft sigh escaped him, golden eyes drifting to the kits again. With some luck, Serpentberry didn't appear out of the shadows, nor ever found out what little Dawnkit wanted to do. He was curious however, why she was so intent on getting some... But then again, his thought drifted to the other's mother... Was she getting worse..?

"and this time, she won't be forgiving"
mischief and wonder was to be expected... paired with some hunger for independence that came from all kits eventually. it was not as if they were so small to need nursing and support through their wobbly walks... it should come at no surprise that unknowns within the camp's confines would steal their interest quickly. herbs were one such fantastical wonder, something not easily explained that took moons of intentional searching to understand. even Juniperstar couldn't declare herself an expert, or even half of one... and she was plenty older than even these kittens were. than even Copperstorm was.

she joins them with a fond smile cast towards Falsekit, one of the younger ones that Serpentberry had been laid a claim to. if they were hers then she would always reserve some small pit of softness for them where Serpentberry struggled to offer more than roughness. "There is at least one medicine I know you can safely have," the leader states, stooping low to whisper with the kits like she is partaking in their great scandal. they would likely recognize it too, for all its luster as a sweet treat. "It's sticky... and yellowish in color... do you know what it's called?"

For the most part, Thornkit allowed Falsekit to do as they pleased. That wasn't to say he didn't keep a close eye on them - he did, and, to some degree, he kept Falsekit on as much of a leash as he did Faithkit. It was just that the leash that Thornkit had attached to Falsekit was invisible, and longer reaching. Settled where he'd been by Faithkit's side, Thornkit had kept one ear swiveled in Falsekit's direction as his littermate prowled about the medicine cat's den, taking stock or observing the herbs or whatever it was that Falsekit got up to in that elusive mind of theirs. It wasn't until Dawnkit stepped into the den and tried to rope Falsekit into some scheme that Thornkit got up.

"If you want help, you should wait for Serpentberry. We don't need you sneaking around in here and getting all of us in trouble." Thornkit huffed as he came up beside Falsekit and gave Dawnkit a disapproving glare. That Falsekit had agreed to help the other kit was conveniently overlooked. "Besides, you don't even know what you're looking for. You won't be of much help to anybody like that." He'd already been on edge with Dawnkit's presence, but as one of the warriors filed into the medicine cat's den, followed shortly by Juniperstar herself, Thornkit frowned, but he didn't say anything more. Not in front of the leader of the Clan. He held his tongue as she who held his fate in her paws crouched down to the kits' height, and offered to treat them, despite their transgressions. Was she hiding some ulterior motive? Was this a ploy, to definitively catch them in the act?

"Honey?" Thornkit asked, the word drawn out as he made the executive decision to, if this was what that was, take the fall - not for Dawnkit's sake, but for Falsekit's.
