Briarpaw stood by the fresh-kill pile, eyeing the offerings that had been deposited that day. He'd had a decent morning of training with Brambletail, and his mentor had dismissed him for the day, sending him to pick out some prey to replenish his energy before they went out that evening for hunting. He moved a sparrow off the top of the pile, sniffing out a mouse that was still quite fresh. Another patrol may have just gotten back. He plucked it from the pile and retreated a bit, sitting down to tuck into the prey and savoring the peace and food.

That is, until he noticed another body taking a seat beside him. The scent was clear and the size was a dead giveaway.

Flurryvale.

He barely acknowledged the newly-promoted warrior, trying to keep his eyes on the mouse, but after a few moments of awkward silence, he huffed and fixed the other cat with a stern look.

"Can I help you?" He asked with a slightly sarcastic drawl.

It had been horrible for his ego, the way Flurryvale had been promoted. He had heard whispers of it coming of course - why else would his mentor be so quick to rush his assessment, to make sure that he was good with everything and understood as much as he could? The long-furred feline knew that there was something special about him - why else would he be so quick to excel at what took some of the other apprentices their whole apprenticeship to understand - and this had only just confirmed his delusion. He held himself high, told himself he was better than some of those that were older than him due to them still holding that -paw of a moniker at the end of their name.

For some reason today, paws moved carefully within the camp, placing down prey amongst the pile before nose moved along the dwindling thing, picking out a smaller piece for himself before he was soon sitting beside Briarpaw. Whether it was out of habit or something else he wouldn't be able to say, but he sat near the apprentice nonetheless, carefully worked on the mouse he'd picked up before the silence was broken by a sarcastic drawl and eyes would look up to the other, a hum leaving his throat before his head shook and at the same time his own slight sarcastic-laced words spilled from his own maw- "Mmm, no I don't think so." He'd muse for a moment before paw would reach up to scratch at his chin for a mere moment, "Actually... been wondering how apprenticeship was treating you, you're almost a warrior right?"

Eyes lit up as he asked the question, tail-tip flicking for but a moment as head cocked slightly to the side. He was an apprentice so recently, but still he couldn't help but poke a little, see the other's reaction at being asked the question when one two moons younger was already above him in the ranks.

Since Echokit was getting closer and closer to apprenticeship, he took it upon himself to not just wander camp, but to patrol it. It helped that his near permanent scowl did well to give off the vibe of practiced focus, and he was notably larger than the other kits his age so other cats who didn't know him often just assumed he already was an apprentice. To a point he had considered going into the territory, not for very long, nor very far into it, just to get himself some sort of head start for when he did have a mentor to show him.

That being said, Echokit held no hope or expectation that he would get a mentor at all. He knew Juniperstar wouldn't have done that, he knew that even as she renamed and carried herself as Loonstar now that she wouldn't do that. Alas, Echokit still just rather wrongly assumed that he would just be forgotten or glossed over- rather... Did he fear it? He wasn't sure.

Before he could get lost in those thoughts, Echokit's attention was drawn to the freshkill pile as he passed. His brother Briarpaw and the new early graduate Flurryvale had crossed paths. Echokit grumbled, while Flurryvale wasn't Gracepaw or anything, Echokit didn't like how they carried themselves especially after their early graduation.
"Pfft. Don't get too ahead of yourself. Or else you won't notice what's comin' up behind you."

Briarpaw didn't bother to hide the way his lip curled with displeasure. The young upstart had always been annoying, but now he was even worse.

"Just fine," he said, voice short. "Brambletail said I'm well on track. It won't be long before I'll be moving my nest into the warrior den." He narrowed his eyes.

"Don't get too comfortable there," he added. "You'll have less space to sprawl out soon enough." His ear twitched as Echokit spoke. Why was his younger sibling trying to defend him? It would only make him look inferior to Flurryvale.

"And what would you know about it?" he snapped to Echokit.
OOC:

Blizzardblaze was the type of cat who assumed the competency of the decision-makers in his life. This saved him a lot of grief and uncertainty while simultaneously opening plenty of doors for tragedy and inconvenience - but he didn't realize that. Not yet, at least. His life had never been made worse by any choice of his Clanmates or superiors, not in any way he could perceive. This all meant that he assumed Flurryvale was an exceptional warrior and that hurt feelings about it, while understandable, were unfair. But any bad blood between Briarpaw and Flurryvale - or Echokit, for that matter - sailed far above the forager's head. All he heard and understood as he crunched his way through the front half of a squirrel was that Brambletail felt that Briarpaw would soon be a warrior. Blizzardblaze swallowed noisily and gave an approving swish of his tail.

"Exciting stuff." the muscular bicolor declared in a cheerful way. He studied the tortoiseshell with thoughtful pale eyes, pondering what he'd seen of the apprentice. Then he thought about moving one's nests and his whiskers twitched. That was one of his areas of expertise! "Moving into the warriors' den is a great opportunity to re-evaluate your nest and ensure it's appropriately thick and warm." Blizzardblaze swept his tongue around his lips, clearing some of the debris from his meal as he continued on what was unmistakably a topic of great importance to him. "You should discard any moss that's been flattened so much it's lost its integrity and isn't cushioning you anymore, for one thing. That's mistake number one I see apprentices and young warriors make, thinking they don't need proper support just 'because they're not elders. Everyone needs a nest that keeps their bones from resting on the ground."

"Now, outside of strength and support, there's the warmth piece. It's leaf-bare - you want a good, thick nest that keeps your body heat close to you and doesn't spill out into the den. You're working hard to stay warm, why let the air steal it from you because your nest is full of holes?"
The small warrior seemed to be growing increasingly animated, his eyes very bright. "See, it's important to get all the gaps filled in. You don't want the cold to get you while you sleep...that's how you get sick." Blizzardblaze shook his head mournfully at the thought. "Now, y'know, there's all kinds of other things that are important too - size, softness, quality and cleanliness of the materials - but I'd say support and warmth are the most important things by far. If you're interested in an example, you can have a look at my nest anytime. I've just recently experimented with feathers as an additional protective layer, and..."

It seemed to suddenly dawn on the black-and-white tomcat that he'd been talking about nest-building for quite some time now, and he cleared his throat hurriedly. "Erm, well, yeah. Anyways. Exciting, very exciting. More warriors for ThunderClan soon. Hooray!" Then he ducked his head and stuffed his mouth with more squirrel, hoping not to show his sheepishness.

In that moment, Echokit almost forgot that Briarpaw was even there. The distaste for those with an ego even close to Gracepaw overshadowed everything. That was, until he heard Briarpaw snap at him. Echokit looked at Briarpaw and exhaled sharply.
"Ah. Right, my bad. I forgot you hate it when someone is on your side."
He retorted dryly with a hint of sarcasm.

Echokit almost spoke more, but decided against it. In his mind there was little point in trying to convince Briarpaw to relax. He was always so avoidant of Echokit and his littermates- as if they were some sort of threat to him or something dumb like that. Luckily, someone else had decided to speak, and they spoke a lot. From Echokit's perspective this was a welcome addition, it might get Briarpaw off his back for being nice.

The older cat gave tips and reminders. It was all sensible information, if not incredibly obvious as well. Still, the intent behind it was to be helpful and welcoming. Echokit wondered just how badly Briarpaw would react, even though he hoped he wouldn't. At least it wasn't going to be Echokit's fault.
