" Right, okay! " Cricketkit called out, tapping her paw twice on the ground beside the symbol she'd carefully drawn, a swirling spiral, fluid and neat. " This one means shinies! " she declared with all the seriousness she could muster, eye wide as she looked up at Meadowpaw. " If you find a shiny, you put this symbol down so the other knows where to look! That way, no shiny gets left behind! " Without missing a beat, she scooted over to another spot and stuck out her tongue slightly in concentration, carefully sketching out a soft, star-like shape with her paw.

" This one... " she said more quietly. " This is for when you miss someone, but it hurts too much to talk about it. You just draw this, and it means you're thinking of them. " She tapped it twice, then pointed up to the sky. " We know they're up there... but the missing still hurts sometimes. " She bounced up, tail flicking, and pounced toward a new patch of ground, bum high as she drew a bright, round sun with gentle rays extending outward. " And this! " she grinned. " This means protection. If you need comfort or to feel safe, you draw this and I'll come sit with you. No questions, just cuddles. It means you're not alone. "

With a little nod, she padded back to Meadowpaw's side and plopped down beside her, fluffy tail curling neatly around her paws. " It's our secret sister code! " she beamed proudly, leaning against Meadow with a spark in her eye. " I've got more if you wanna know them... I had to think really hard to come up with just the right ones! "

Meadowpaw remained seated, patiently nodding as Cricketkit explained. She played the part of the diligent student learning from a master. Her eyes traced the little symbols that the dilute traced before attempting to draw them too. Meadow couldn't help but smile when Cricketkit declared that the spiral was to mean 'shinies'.

When the dilute moved, so did she, albeit slower. Meadowpaw slowly rose to her paws and shuffled aside, careful not to disturb the works in the dirt.

The next symbol made her smile grow that much more tender, accompanied by the faintest ache in her chest. That knowing feeling—missing someone—hurting too much to talk about it. For moons after the fire, she couldn't even speak the names of those they lost aloud. Memories that once brought her joy had begun to cause pain, a terrible ache that never ceased in the aftermath of their loss. Even after gathering them flowers, stacking the stones for their memorials, and grieving with her family, she still felt it. Time healed gradually, after moons of healing, she could embrace their memory with a measure of joy despite the grief that she still deeply felt in her heart. If anything, the fire had taught her to treasure moments like these and to never take them for granted. Now even the simplest things—like sharing a secret code—were so important to her.

Meadow took her time drawing the star and nodded. "I really like that one a lot. Some things are hard to say, so this is like saying them without needing words." She murmured softly.

She rose gracefully and hopped along after Cricketkit. A warmer sprout of something bloomed in her chest at the next one. "Protection, got it. Same goes for you Cricky, If you need me I'll be there, always." It was clear she put a lot of thought into these secret symbols. Even before the fire, her imagination was never that good.

She eases back, tail curling around the kit. A secret code just for them—for sisters. The thought warmed her heart. Having Cricketkit around made her feel like she had a little sister. Meadowpaw had always been the little sister, never a big one. She always wanted one, but bein' the only kit in her litter and the fact that her Mama didn't have any more kits after either meant that she grew up without any siblings. Sometimes she was lonely, but Nutmeg was always there for her. She thought a sister should be everything that Meggie was—kind and fun. A safe place to go when everything felt lost. That was everything she wanted to be, and everything she would try to be for Cricketkit and Peafowlpaw. and all the kits of WindClan if they allowed it. "I can't believe you thought all these up by yourself! You're a big smartie, y'know that?" She smiled softly.

"I would! Can I make up some too?" Some ideas were brewing in the back of her mind already. "I think we should have some other ones to show how we're feeling too, like with the star one sometimes it's hard to say." Meadow gave it some thought. "Like um... if we're angry or sad and we need to say it. Oh, and sometimes, you just need to be alone too and that can be hard to explain. It doesn't mean that you're necessarily angry with anyone, just that you need to get your thoughts straight, yknow?" There were plenty of times Meadowpaw couldn't express that, not even with her sister.

Cricketkit's fur puffed up with excitement as she stared up at Meadowpaw with her good eye, a wide, bright grin stretched across her face. Meadowpaw didn't think her symbols were weird, or dumb, or a waste of time. Pff, of course she didn't! Why would she? This was absolutely the most awesomest idea Cricket had ever had since the days she was small! And getting to share it with someone she was close to felt... warm. Cozy. Like wrapping up in a sunbeam on a chilly morning.

Especially when Meadowpaw said she liked the star one the best. Cricket had given the most solemn little nod at that, of course she did. It was their quiet way of saying: It hurts, but we're still thinking of you... A giggle bubbled up as Meadowpaw offered her the same symbol in return: protection and comfort. Cricket bumped her tiny frame against her big sister's side, her eye gleaming with joy. " I know that, silly! Always! You're always there, 'cause you're the nicest sister anyone could ever have. You better believe that! " she meowed firmly, her gaze dropping to the symbols drawn in the dirt with pride. Flustered by the compliment, she could only grin, paw swiping shyly across her nose with a quiet chuckle. " Hehe… "

" I know, right? I can be super smart and sneaky and I find all kinds of cool stuff! I'm tiny, and that makes me real good at it! " she declared with a proud little puff of her chest. Then she tipped her head in thought. " Y'know what, yeah! This is our code, so you should totally make some symbols too! What d'you have in mind, huh? " At the mention of anger, her expression turned thoughtful, nose scrunched.
The fire had felt angry... It had bitten at everything in its path. Did it mean to? Or was it just fire being fire…? Hmm. No, the fire symbol wouldn't be a nice one to use after all.

" What would you draw for, like... Boooo, I'm mad, don't bother me 'cause I'll-- " And she snapped her little teeth together twice, dramatically and comically. " Like that! "
