Flickerdance shouldn't have been so naive. So... stupid. It takes all of her willpower not to stomp through the forest like a scolded kit, lest her Clanmates call her out on her immaturity. No, her face and body language must remain impartial—even though she wishes she could sneer in Loonstar's face for assigning her such a foolish task. ThunderClan's newest, they had called her, Cinderstep, and Grizzlypurr- and yet this is what they deserve? Teaching tricks to kittens that can barely pay attention? What a waste of time and energy. They will forget everything they learn here as soon as they return to their nests and fall asleep.

Despite it all, Flickerdance knows better than to argue and disobey. What respect she has started to scrounge up would be gone in an instant. Still... she isn't happy about this, even if she won't let it show. At least Loonstar had made her the leader of this so-called "patrol". It's the least they could do for her.

"Here we are,"
she says, stoic as ever. The stream beside camp had not been a long trek at all. She just hopes that the kits aren't so brainless that they will try to run away and play warrior before their time. Trying to catch them in the dense forest would be a nightmare.
"Everyone, focus. Listen to me, Grizzlypurr, and Cinderstep. Understood?"
Her gaze sweeps across the tiny crowd, strict and daring anyone to step out of line.
"Otherwise I'll tell Loonstar to delay your apprenticehood."

She supposes she should make peace with her fate for today. It will make things easier—will certainly make this torture pass by faster. Flickerdance lets the leaf-fall sun warm her pelt, and it soothes her, if just a little.
"First things first. Can anyone tell me why it's important to hide our scent? No wrong answers."

KIT PATROL: You're tasked with teaching the kits how to hide their scent near the small stream east of camp!

Fawnkit couldn't believe her ears when Loonstar announced there would be a patrol led by Flickerdance meant to teach the kits how to hide their scents. They would get to go outside camp!!! And with Flickerdance out of all warriors! Fawnkit couldn't wait.

And so now she marched obediently with the three young warriors and her fellow denmates, keeping her eyes on Flickerdance's tail. Fawnkit liked Flickerdance a lot, she had taught her a few moves and strategies before and Fawnkit hoped she'd teach her even more in the times to come. Flickerdance was really good at explaining everything for Fawnkit to understand.

Can anyone tell me why it's important to hide our scent?

Fawnkit thought for a moment to what she'd learned from her clanmates so far. Loonstar, back then Juniperstar, had taught the kits to mix their scents by running around before hiding, during the hide and seek game. Was the answer then to hide better from other cats?

Then she remembered that fateful day when a hawk descended upon the camp, threatening to hurt them. Could it smell her too? Maybe it wasn't just cats who could smell them, but predators as well.

Lastly, she thought of the sunning rocks party. There she met cats from another clan, RiverClan, smelling of a foul fish smell that made her nose sting. They certainly didn't try to hide their scent! Though, Fawnkit thought, they probably should have.

"Is it..." she tried to form her thoughts into words. "Is it to make sure enemy cats and predators don't notice us?"

That made the most sense to her - surprise attacks on enemy cats or hiding from predators seemed like really important things to Fawnkit, after what she's seen and heard. ThunderClan was very smart, in her opinion. Unlike RiverClan, who wore their smelly coats proudly and without shame!

—— ✦ Eye in the Sun. You're all I see. Why won't you look at me? ✦ ——

The bundle of brown fur had observed the passing out of patrols. An attempt at assimilation into the strange society of cats they had wandered into. Dew and Copper both assured they were too young for patrols, but as it goes, they were wandering the Thunderclan territory on a patrol nonetheless.

Leveretkit walked silently amongst the rabble of other kittens, watching in a muted observation of the squeaked conversations and the tightened jaws of the warriors leading them to their destination. A peculiar sight they would seem, that one thing they knew for certain.

As the group rounded about to a stream that meandered through the land, they were all halted, commanded to pay attention. They blinked wordlessly at Flicker's vague attempt at a thread, glancing to the other kittens to see their reactions. Shuffled paws and whispers amongst them.

Though their own attention remained on Flickerdance, who seemed desperate to keep a cool head and control of the rabble. Leveret was not the first to answer; instead, the one they knew as Fawnkit spoke up first with a wise assessment of the question. They nodded thoughtfully, red eyes glancing to Fawnkit first. "And so that we cannot be tracked to where we are going or where we are from." They added, as their gaze flickered back up to the young warrior.

They had a suspicion about why they had been led to the stream, though they stifled the need to jump to conclusions. It seemed as if Flickerdance was on edge enough with a clowder of kittens, even if she had two other warriors to help, the slightest redirection of her plan would likely end up in a disaster of a patrol. And honestly, Leveretkit simply didn't want to deal with the whining.

With his parents gone, Echokit was in a noticeably better mood. A strangeness, to be sure for any that remembered him but as far as he was concerned no such cat existed that cared to outside of maybe his siblings whenever it was convenient for them. Still, older Warriors found such a reaction odd and worrying. While it was... Nice that he was more positive, the fact that it was because two cats went missing could very much be cause for concern. A concern that Echokit didn't care for either.

In any case he was on board with this little kitten patrol business, just out of curiosity. Maybe something funny might happen, maybe not. Following along in silence, Echokit sighed at the overexcited yapping of some other kittens and rolled his eyes at the overly enthusiastic showboats among them since it reminded him of how performative and egotistical some of his siblings were to him.

Hopefully the rest of these denmates of his would get it together soon, not that it was up to him to help them. Eventually the group stopped by a stream, with Flickerdance posing a question. Ah, some of the basics. Echokit overheard a lot of this from his parents when they were working Gracepaw and Briarpaw to the bone for their own amusement. In his mind, he was capable of answering this question perfectly, but where was the fun in that? Nothing could be learned from already attaining perfection.

Lucky for him, two other kits spoke up, and they were on the right track. Echokit huffed, choosing to speak in support of what had thus far been said.
"It is also useful for hunting. If enemy cats, predators and prey don't notice us, or are unable to track our scent otherwise then we gain the upper paw. Stealth is an advantage, and an advantage is to be secured, maintained."
Oh, well... Perhaps that was a bit too much, too inorganic, robotic, evidence of the emotional scars his parents had left not only on his siblings, but on himself.
"Its just. Smart to do it, or whatever..."
Impressive save, truly.

Victorykit was buzzing with excitement. She peered around the forest with wide eyes, taking in as much information as she could. She'd been planning a venture out into the woods to look for her parents in the few days since they'd gone missing, and this was the perfect opportunity to scope it out. And she was going to learn warrior techniques from newly-named warriors? What a lucky day! She wished the other stupid kits weren't around, but whatever, it would be worth it still. She took detailed mental notes of the short journey from camp to the stream. She wondered how far the stream stretched, if she could follow it out of their territory, if that was what her parents had done when they left. If they left. Either way, this would be valuable information in finding them.

When they arrive at the stream, Flickerdance threatened to delay their apprenticeships if they don't behave, and Victorykit's chest tightened. Did she have that power? Not that it mattered, because Victorykit would behave. She would do better than just behave. Putting on her best display of politeness, she listened to the other kits' answers. They weren't bad answers, exactly, but she could tell that Flickerdance wasn't impressed. She rolled her eyes at Echokit's answer, especially. He was such a freak, no wonder he didn't have any friends. Though she did, begrudgingly, admit that he was right.
"The element of surprise,"
she agrees.
"It's important for both hunting and fighting."
She, too, had been taking notes when their parents trained their older siblings. She also asked a lot of questions, directed at anyone who might answer. She wanted to have as much of an edge as she could when she became an apprentice. Before their parents' disappearance, she'd been determined to finish her warrior training in 5 moons to impress them. Now that they were gone, she decided she had to do it in 4, so she could head out on her own and bring them home.

"Will we use the stream to help hide our scent?"
Victorykit cocked her head to one side, peering past the young warriors to the stream. Surely there was a reason they'd been brought there.

He trots alongside the other kittens with confidence, as if he'd done this very trek for moons upon moons. Hollykit does not particularly care about the why they're all being escorted out of camp but rather the question of how long they'd be out here. They were going to a stream, of course, but a small part of him wondered if they could go farther into the territory.

Flickerdance asks a question that he doesn't catch, lost in thought as he is and he blinks. It must have been important for all the other kits are chiming in with answers. "Um, uhhhh..." The kit bounces in place, trying to buy time to figure out the right answer. "So we can catch prey better?" He's more parroting what the others have said but it sounds about right to him.

Blue eyes drift to the nearby stream and he moves closer to tentatively dip a paw in only to just as quickly pull it back with a squeak. It was cold. Nothing like the occasional puddle in camp. He looks back towards Flickerdance and the other warriors, almost suspicious as if they themselves had made the stream cold. "What's a stream got to do with hiding our scent?"

Leave what's heavy, what's heavy behind.
If your heart won't move, find a reason why.
If your tears don't fall, it's not that you're dry
You just forgot what it's like to cry.

Frecklekit didn't quite understand why he had to be part of this outing. It seemed pointless, but he knew there was no way to opt out. A soft sigh escaped him as he lingered at the back of the group, ears pricking forward to catch everything Flickerdance was saying. Focus. Listen to the three warriors or risk delaying apprenticehood. He rolled his eyes and settled himself at the end of the line, peering at Flickerdance as her question echoed to the crowd of kits.

Why is it important to hide your scent?

Kits scrambled to answer, blurting out reasons Frecklekit had already considered. He had nothing new to offer so he just murmured softly, almost to himself. " Everything they said... " His ear twitched as he added. " ... Prey could tell we're around if our scent is to... Noticeable. " A frown creased his muzzle as he curled his tail around himself, eyes tracking the young warriors carefully.

His mind wandered briefly to their parents. Was this the same careful planning they had used to make sure no one could follow them? His gaze lingered on Victorykit and Echokit, and a flicker of concern passed through him. Were they going to go into the stream? He blinked and turned his attention back to Flickerdance, keeping himself close to Hollykit, just in case.
