FALLING FOR THE PROMISE OF THE
EMPTINESS MACHINE

The council meeting had been a disaster, and the clan meeting shortly after had been just as bad. Emotions were still understandably high but none of them had the luxury of allowing things to settle. Despite her predisposition to snap, Russetfall held her silence tight, so tight she felt she might choke on it. If no one else on the council would be reasonable then she'd step up. Everyone else was too busy nursing their wounded pride to realize that the biggest enemy in all of this was their own vitriol directed at each other. Riverclan would destroy itself from the inside out before their enemies could.

She had told Pikestar she wanted to speak with him but he had immediately retreated into his den the moment the clan meeting ended. "Pikestar," The Life Guard pushes into the den unceremoniously, taking in the state of her leader's living space. Nest shredded, trinkets normally aligned so neatly scattered every which way...and in the center of it all sat Pikestar. Whether its defeat in his posture or grief, she can't tell. They often look the same from a distance.

"I wanted to speak with you." She pauses, waiting for him to turn to face her. Braces herself for his response to her words though she gives nothing away in her posture instead with head held high. "...Now more than ever you need to hold yourself together. You had some good points back in the meeting, but you let your emotions get the better of you and said some things that pushed away your council rather than brought us together."

Granted, she had also been the one to jumpstart it in a way with her all-too-helpful observation that Adderfang was in no position to be on patrols or the like. Neither was Pine but compared to the other he seemed hardly scratched. Just how strong were those Shadowclan warriors to leave those two in such a state..? It made her blood boil.

"...I've seen similar things like this happen before... Before I drifted into the shipyard. A leader can't form a council just to dismiss their advice because of pride of whatever. ...I've seen cats speak of other's freedom the way you did to Adder and the others wake up to their throat torn out and never wake again." Her tail lashes behind her, a red flag of warning. "I've put my trust in you so far despite my misgivings, and I want to see this Clan survive. But for it to do that you need to actually listen to us when we give our opinions and advice."

She stares at him, eyes sharp and critical. "Tell me you understand, really understand, and I will stand with you on this. I will share my experience with you, all you have to do is ask."
