Crawled out of the dark and into the light

.

// Takes place not long after the fight with Merry and Sassafras.

Meadowpaw couldn't sleep.

She tried, curling up tight in her nest and burying her nose beneath her paws, contemplating trying to visit Deadwood again. But no matter how still she lay, her thoughts wouldn't quiet.

It was still dark when she crawled out of her nest. Her eyes felt heavy, but her heart was heavier. She sat by herself for a while near the garden, brushing her paw gently through the roots she'd let overgrow. Even the flowers seemed unsure of where to set their roots.

The fight was still at the front of her mind. She could still hear their raised voices. Word-for-word the horrible things that were said. Meadow wished that she could take charge like Goldy did. Though she doubted that even if she had the strength and the courage to place herself between them like he did that they would've listened...

Meadow could understand that not everyone could get along. Mama and Nutmeg didn't get along, but they never looked at one another like that… Like they were going to rip each other to pieces.

She hadn't forgotten how the way Merrystalk looked at Sassy or how he sounded either. For a second, it was like he was an entirely different cat—a stranger. But when he spoke to her, he sounded like himself again. The same tom that helped protect them from dogs and comforted cats during the fire...

Her eyes swept over camp until she found a flax pelt. Meadow tread lightly, paws moving through the whisper of early morning. The little calico hesitated for a moment before gently prodding his side. "Merry?" She whispered, "I know it's early but I need to talk to you."

If she held onto it forever, it might swallow her up… So she wouldn't. She would lay it out with him and then find a way forward. There had to be something that she could do for them. But first, she just needed to understand.

—————————————— Dreaming along in a pace you'll understand. ✦

The tortie wasn't a heavy sleeper on the best of days, and the last few, he had been slower to rouse, that was for certain. So when his side was poked a few times, to admit Merry assumed he had rolled onto something and it was sticking his side. Until, of course, the meek and tiny voice of Meadowpaw reached his ears, suddenly much more awake. He looked at the little calico, she seemed restless, there was something in her eyes that spoke as much.

"Aye 'f course we can have a chat." His voice was soft, a yawn parting his lips as he rose to his feet. "We best not disturb anyone else's sleep." Merry motioned for Meadow to walk, as much as his demeanor was relaxed from having just awoken, as the two walked past sleeping clanmates, he had a sneaking suspicion of what it was she wanted to talk about. The argument was still fresh in everyone's mind; he wanted to give her space, she was upset from having witnessed the argument, and the last thing he wanted to do was upset her more by trying to broach the topic when she wasn't up to it.

It didn't take long for the both of them to get just outside of camp, they could walk and talk if she got antsy, but at least out of earshot, not to disturb anyone's sleep lest Merry get on anyone else's bad books. "Now then, what's it ya' need me fer, Meadow?" He wouldn't try and jump the gun of the conversation, he wouldn't doubt that Meadow would have had some set questions in mind for everything that happened, and throwing her off wouldn't do either of them any good.

Meadowpaw followed silently beside him, her paws light against the dewy earth. The camp faded behind them, muted by the hush of early morning. It was quiet now—peaceful—but her mind never stopped humming. The moment they were far enough from camp, she slowed and turned to face him.

She didn't look at him at first. Her gaze was fixed somewhere on the ground, into the tangled grass. The freshest of dewdrops still clung to them, twinkling in the dim light.

"I… I couldn't sleep," She admitted, barely above a whisper. "I tried, but what happened the other day keeps rolling around in my head and I can't take it anymore." Her claws flexed into the dirt before she finally turned to look at him.

"I really look up to you." She continued quickly, worried he might not let her finish before she'd had a chance to spill everything that's been on her mind. "When the fire happened, you helped keep everyone together. You were there for us after it too... and there for me... I like to think you had everyone in mind when you were arguing with Sassafras too, but…" Her voice caught, and she exhaled slowly, trying to keep it steady.

"When you and Sassy were fighting, I didn't recognize you." The words were hard to say. They clogged in her throat, coming up a bit gargled. Her ears flicked back. "You looked like someone completely different from the Merrystalk I know and that scared me."

"I want to know what happened? Between you two? I just—" She hesitated, her voice softening again. "I want to understand so maybe I can help? Even if you two can't 'get along' like you said, you looked like you wanted to hurt each other, and that's not okay. We're supposed to be working together, not squabbling amongst ourselves. It don't matter how different you and Sassy are." Meadowpaw narrowed her eyes, expression shifting into something more determined. "And don't you 'lil flower' me again either! I'm not a kit anymore, so you can give it to me straight." Nothing made her feel worse than when cats tried to dumb things down like they were talking to a kit. But she wasn't one anymore and hadn't been for some time. She straightened up a bit, tail flicking sharply as she waited for an answer.
