JINGLEMOON

RIVERCLAN
MEDICINE CAT
HE/THEY
28 MOONS
DINGO
Ever since Rainpaw's disappearance and the clan's failed attempts at finding her Jinglemoon had busied himself with anything and everything he possibly could. When there was nothing to do he would re-sort the herbs or re-line his nest and the other nests in the medicine den... Except for the one that had been Rainpaw's. Part of him wanted to make it a new fresh nest for when she came back from... Wherever she was now. So it'd be ready for her but the other part of him felt like removing it or changing it would be removing the last part of her that still remained in the medicine den. Letting out a low sigh as he cast a glance to the empty nest he place down the herbs he'd started resorting for the third time today. It was no longer working at keeping his mind off of it all.

He'd admittedly been a little avoidant of Rainpaw's siblings ever since her disappearance as well, both because they reminded him of the missing apprentice but also because a deep feeling of guilt tugged at his heart everytime he saw the two. Galepaw seemed as they always were, unbothered, much like it had been when their mother died but this worried the medicine cat greatly as he was afraid the younger cat was putting up a front to hide from facing their true emotions. Galepaw was also the one who was hardest to avoid... Thunderpaw on the other hand had been pretty obvious and vocal even in her dislike for the blue tabby tom ever since he took Rainpaw on as an apprentice. Likely quite bitter at him for having separated the trio from training together as warrior apprentices. He could understand her dislike for him and for the most part had tried to just give her space and be patient with her as she expressed these emotions.

Ever since Rainpaw went missing though? Of course the apprentices' emotions had practically exploded. Losing her mother the way she had and now this? It was easier to blame somebody else, it gave one something to focus all those difficult and ugly feelings towards and in a way? He blamed himself too. Maybe he really shouldn't have picked her as the medicine cat apprentice. Maybe she had become too overwhelmed by it all and didn't feel as though she could tell anyone about that. Maybe he should have been a better teacher. Maybe he shouldn't have picked an apprentice at all. But it was too late for all that now, Rainpaw wasn't here and these thoughts wouldn't magically bring her back.

Her siblings though were still here and he didn't want Thunderpaw to feel discouraged from approaching him if she needed medical help out of spite towards him. He also didn't want the apprentice to go and get herself hurt in going out to try and look for Rainpaw either. She could dislike him still if she wanted to, especially if it helped her in some way to be angry at him instead of herself or some other cat but Jinglemoon felt it had gotten to a point of concern now and that needed to be mended. But how to approach the apprentice about it?

A good place to start would probably be to try talking to some of the other cats who knew her better, Galepaw was out of the question but maybe her mentor... Russetfall! Surely he could talk to Russet about it. Maybe she too already had concerns of her own about it too? Though he wasn't sure how much Thunderpaw really told her own mentor. Either way it was worth it to at least ask, so he'd pad out of the medicine den in search of the chocolate mackerel tabby. He was pretty certain she'd gone down to the river a little earlier so he'd slink his way out of camp and headed for the border in hopes of finding her.

Sure enough he'd find her sitting alongside the river, fishing if he had to guess-- He felt bad to interrupt her but perhaps he could help with fishing afterwards to make up for it! Or they could fish and talk even-- Did that scare the prey away? He really ought to hunt a bit more often... "Hey Russetfall?" He'd call out as he approached the Life Guard, suddenly feeling a little hot around the ear tips as he realized he wasn't actually sure how to start the conversation... Probably should've thought of that before calling out, mousebrain! "Can I uhhhh- Can I talk to you?" He began, "If you have a moment to spare, it's just about Thunderpaw"

Russetfall was tired, but still there was work to be done. The clan needed to be fed, patrols to be led and of course there was also Thunderpaw. Speaking of her apprentice she was still thinking of an appropriate punishment. Running away like that and scaring the clan half to death when Rainpaw had just-

She's startled out of her thoughts with a jolt, her paw slapping into the water prematurely and scaring away the fish she'd been eyeing. "Shit." It's a frustrated growl. Fishing had not been exactly fruitful this trip. Her irritated frown shifts into something more... neutral as she looks up to see who'd interrupted her. "Oh, Jinglemoon, it's you. I don't think the river itself has any herbs you could use, sorry to say." Or maybe the plants at the bottom of the river COULD be used for something, to her they all just looked like weeds. Something that annoyingly clung to limbs and fur alike while she swam.

But no, it seemed that was not the reason the medicine cat had come so far from camp. She supposed she should have expected this sooner or later. A sigh leaves her lips, ears briefly flattening to her skull before turning to face the river again. Her tail lightly taps the space beside her, beckoning. "Sit."

Waiting a moment to see if Jinglemoon would move, she shakes her head. "Is she giving you trouble? She shouldn't- I told her to leave you be." A pause. "It's not your fault, Jingle. I'm sure Rainpaw will come back eventually."

'Or maybe she won't.' The unwanted thought jumps to mind and she frowns. Just because she'd done the very same didn't mean Rainpaw would.

JINGLEMOON

RIVERCLAN
MEDICINE CAT
HE/THEY
28 MOONS
DINGO
Jinglemoon would grimace seeing that his interruption caused Russetfall to miss a catch and though her frown rests into a more neutral expression once she sees that it was him who interrupted her, he still flattens his ears back apologetically his tail drooping around his legs. "Sorry about that" He'd try and perk back up a little though as he offered, "Here, how about I help you fish? To make up for it" He wasn't exactly the most skilled hunter but the efforts of two cats were better than one right?

At first she seemed to think he had come down this way for herbs and his whiskers gave an amused twitch when she pointed out that she wasn't sure the river itself had any herbs to use. "Are you sure?" He would entertain the thought since, well, the river did indeed supply plants of its own and whether or not those had any medical benefits was still yet to be known but that was how more knowledge was gained, from trying the unknown! "Some of the reed-like and weed bits at the bottom could be quite useful for binds maybe" They at least did the whole clinging to limbs part well in the water anyways! But this wasn't what he'd come down here for despite his ramblings.

When prompted to sit he would hesitate at first but eventually would take up the space beside her, tucking his tail around his paws as he sat and looked down at the water of the river as it rushed by. Trouble was certainly one way to describe it all but the medicine cat would shake his head. "It's alright, she doesn't have to like me. I know I wouldn't either if I were in her paws" He shuffled his own paws uncomfortably when Russetfall mentioned that it wasn't his fault and that Rainpaw would return eventually. He avoided her gaze, keeping his eyes on the river instead as though it might be able to tell him where the apprentice had gone. Clearly, he wasn't so sure that that was true, he didn't want to argue with Russetfall but he did feel responsible.

"Thunderpaw didn't like me even before Rainpaw went... Missing." He paused on the word as it stung to even say it. "I just worry that now, with all that's happened she maybe hates me enough that she might avoid seeking medical help even when its needed just so she can avoid seeing me. And since I'm the only medicine cat I just... I worry about her" Maybe things would ease up again once Rainpaw came back home but... What if she didn't? And no cat knew when that would be either. He was still sure that Thunderpaw hadn't forgiven him since her and her littermates had first been apprenticed, as he'd split the trio up by taking Rainpaw under his own wing. But now? Now that he had failed to keep her safe? Thunderpaw had every right to hate him, he just didn't want that to come at a cost to herself.

"I just don't know what to do to about it all" He would sigh. That was why he had come looking for Russetfall though, in hopes of a solution.

Frostmoth does not intend to intrude on his clanmates' conversation. He had genuinely just been fishing nearby when he had overheard Jinglemoon and Russetfall murmuring something about Thunderpaw, and the deputy had pricked his ears with interest. "Do you mind if I join you both?" Frostmoth asks mildly, feeling a bit sheepish for interjecting himself into a conversation that he had not been directly invited to. He glances between them, and when neither of them seem particularly perturbed by his joining, he sits close to them with his tail tucked neatly over his front paws. "Sorry... It's just... I feel that it's part of my job to be concerned with the apprentices, that's all. Pikestar already has to be concerned about so much," he snaps his jaws shut after a moment, realizing he doesn't really need to explain himself to Jinglemoon and Russetfall. This is good company. Though the latter is not as warm, she would be quick to tell him off.

"Thunderpaw has always been the strongest-willed of any of her siblings," Frostmoth comments thoughtfully, crown tipping slightly as he thinks of the triad of siblings. The clan had deeply felt the residual effects of losing Rainpaw, it had only been a few sunrises ago, but already felt like it had been moons. The deputy had been sending canvassing patrols every day and had doubled his own load with the efforts, but they came up empty-pawed each time. He wonders how the other two apprentices might be feeling. Thunderpaw had obviously stormed off, overwhelmed by her sister going missing in the night, and Galepaw... Well. Galepaw had always been particularly hard for the deputy to read.

He frowns when Jinglemoon mentions that he's worried Thunderpaw would forego medical attention out of dislike for him. Had Jinglemoon ever felt that way about Frostmoth? Had he worried that the deputy ever had some deep-seated dislike for him that lended itself against his own welfare? He chews the inside of his cheek. It's a valid concern to have. "Some young cats are just... Like that, maybe," he offers unhelpfully. Frostmoth, Jinglemoon, and Russetfall aren't exactly senior members of RiverClan by any means, and he can't remember whether he had also been quite as indignant as a younger cat. Plus, apprentices are a new concept to Frostmoth. He had never thought of what it might be like to mentor a younger cat in the way of clan life.

He glances between them both, thinking. "I think... Maybe, Jinglemoon, you could invite Thunderpaw to spend some time with you. She might not agree to it, of course, but... Maybe spending time where Rainpaw stayed will help to soothe her upset." He frowns, realizing that this is probably poor advice. He glances at Russetfall, and hastily adds "Russetfall might have a better idea though. Thunderpaw is her apprentice, after all."

She can't help the laugh that leaves her at the very thought that the plants in the river could be useful. Russetfall could see the potential logic in it, she supposes. Still, if Jinglemoon thought so- "Tell you what, next time I get hurt we'll try the river plants instead of cobwebs. I'll be your test subject for it so you can figure out if it works. Just don't expect me to break my legs anytime soon to REALLY test it." The last bit comes out as a snicker. Stars knew when that would happen but it wasn't like it would hurt to test their options. With leafbare around the corner it certainly might be useful to have a backup if they ran out of cobwebs. Spiders and their precious homes weren't always as easy to find in the colder months, she imagined.

Their conversation is interrupted by Frostmoth and the molly gives him a nod of acknowledgement at his question, shuffling to the side to give him space to sit. Of course he'd be concerned. It seemed like half of the clan these days did nothing but gossip about the three siblings. Did they think she didn't hear them? Or perhaps they thought she simply did not care? Moons ago that would have been the case. Now though, now she wondered when that had begun to change. Iciclepaw's constant presense and calling her 'mom' no longer sent uncomfortable shivers up her spin at the thought. When had Jinglemoon's presence been a comfort rather than some kind of burden? Or the rest of the council's for that matter?

The molly shakes her head with a frown at the two toms when they speak of her apprentice. "Thunderpaw is stubborn, but she's not stupid." She bites back the I'd hope I taught her at least that much. "She's hurting, first her mother drowns and then Rainpaw disappears... It's no wonder you're worried she'd do that. Give her time, Jingle, keep doing what you're doing. ...And in the meantime if something comes up health-wise I'll talk to her about coming to see you."

Green eyes focus thoughtfully on the medicine cat for a moment before turning her attention back to the river. 'I'll even go with her, if that would help...'
