JASPERKIT ⭑✶⋆.˚ I could about anything, I could even learn how to love like you
meow

she'd always had two bodies around her. they were never separated. so when eyes blinked open, they clumsily moved on uneven and unfamiliar terrain. "jasper?" she called, cry quiet, distant. "jasper! jasper..." her voice turned to sniffling as she tripped on her paws and into a muddy bank, realizing that before her was weird surface that lapped at the ground. she saw her reaction, but they didn't understand it- rather thinking it was her sibling, staring back at her.

they were both crying. "jasper! jasper!" she yelled, but as a paw moved to touch it, it plummeted into the water and sent her leaping back with a cry of surprise. and from there, she sat- tears forming down her cheeks and wetting her fur as her head reeled back and she sobbed into the sky.

where was her mom? where was her sibling? where was she? why did she get left behind? so many questions she couldn't understand or even find answers to that left her feeling more alone.

Always the fool with the slowest heart
But I know you'll take me with you
We'll live in spaces between walls

.

Wavesong walked with slow, quiet steps, her heart impossibly heavy, tears shining in her eyes like trapped moonlight. Nearly a moon had passed... A moon since her world had tilted. She knew cats worried for her, knew whispers followed her every time she slipped out of camp. But she couldn't stay confined to the reeds, not when her mind was screaming, her heart aching under the weight of everything she'd lost and everything she feared losing. Her thoughts drifted to her missing child, to the empty space where a tiny heartbeat should've been. To the mother she shared the medicine den with, now dwindling like a dying tide, her spark flickering. To poor Strawberrykit, confused and frightened, unable to understand why her mother slipped away from her, piece by fragile piece.

And then... Adder. Her mate. Her other half. The life they should have had. The future that could've been... Kits at their paws, their family whole, their bond unbroken. She could still feel it, the warmth of those days when it had been Crescent and Rushing and Adder and her, four souls tied together, inseparable. It felt surreal now. Distant. Wrong. Wrong that she stood alone with five kits whose bright eyes searched for answers she didn't know how to give. Soon they would ask where their father was. Soon she would have to tell them something, anything, but how could she explain? How could she say their father had spilled a leader's blood and been banished from RiverClan forever?

The thoughts circled in her mind like a storm-tossed sea, so consuming she almost didn't hear the soft, broken cries carried on the breeze. Almost. Wavesong halted mid-step. Her ears shot up. A kit. Crying. Crying hard. Her heart splintered. She was moving before she even thought about it, paws carrying her forward in a rush of instinct. I'm coming. ' I'm here, wee one. I'm here... '

" Ah... Wee guppy... " she breathed when she found the tiny shape curled in the grass, her voice cracking with a soft gasp. The kit looked so alone, so frightened, so heartbreakingly small. Wavesong lowered herself a little, careful and gentle, stopping a foxlength away so she wouldn't startle the child. Her voice softened into the warm, soothing hush only a mother could give. " Shh... Don't cry, wee one... It's alright. m'right here... " Her eyes searched the clearing, worry tightening her throat. " Are ye alone out here? "

She dipped her head, expression tender and open. The kit was so young, so young... The age of her own brood, she thought. " M'Wavesong... " she murmured, offering her name like a lifeline. Her ears pressed back in concern. " It's okay, love. Yer safe now... " The unspoken question hung heavy in her chest. Where is yer mother, an' what happened t'you, wee heart?
