JASPERKIT ⭑✶⋆.˚ I could about anything, I could even learn how to love like you
meow

she'd always had two bodies around her. they were never separated. so when eyes blinked open, they clumsily moved on uneven and unfamiliar terrain. "jasper?" she called, cry quiet, distant. "jasper! jasper..." her voice turned to sniffling as she tripped on her paws and into a muddy bank, realizing that before her was weird surface that lapped at the ground. she saw her reaction, but they didn't understand it- rather thinking it was her sibling, staring back at her.

they were both crying. "jasper! jasper!" she yelled, but as a paw moved to touch it, it plummeted into the water and sent her leaping back with a cry of surprise. and from there, she sat- tears forming down her cheeks and wetting her fur as her head reeled back and she sobbed into the sky.

where was her mom? where was her sibling? where was she? why did she get left behind? so many questions she couldn't understand or even find answers to that left her feeling more alone.

@Wavesong - but open to anyone!//

Always the fool with the slowest heart
But I know you'll take me with you
We'll live in spaces between walls

.

Wavesong walked with slow, quiet steps, her heart impossibly heavy, tears shining in her eyes like trapped moonlight. The deed had been done... The child had been given to the father.... Her whole world had tilted. She knew cats worried for her, knew whispers followed her every time she slipped out of camp. But she couldn't stay confined to the reeds, not when her mind was screaming, her heart aching under the weight of everything she'd lost and everything she feared losing. Her thoughts drifted to her missing child, to the empty space where a tiny heartbeat should've been. To the mother she shared the medicine den with, now dwindling like a dying tide, her spark flickering. To poor Strawberrykit, confused and frightened, unable to understand why her mother was slipping away from her, piece by fragile piece.

And then... Adder. Her mate. Her other half. The life they should have had. The future that could've been... Kits at their paws, their family whole, their bond unbroken. She could still feel it, the warmth of those days when it had been Crescent and Rushing and Adder and her, four souls tied together, inseparable. It felt surreal now. Distant. Wrong. Wrong that she stood alone with five kits whose bright eyes searched for answers she didn't know how to give. Soon they would ask where their father was. Soon she would have to tell them something, anything, but how could she explain? How could she say their father had spilled a leader's blood and been banished from RiverClan forever?

The thoughts circled in her mind like a storm-tossed sea, so consuming she almost didn't hear the soft, broken cries carried on the breeze. Almost. Wavesong halted mid-step. Her ears shot up. A kit. Crying. Crying hard. Her heart splintered. She was moving before she even thought about it, paws carrying her forward in a rush of instinct. I'm coming. ' I'm here, wee one. I'm here... '

" Ah... Wee guppy... " she breathed when she found the tiny shape curled in the grass, her voice cracking with a soft gasp. The kit looked so alone, so frightened, so heartbreakingly small. Wavesong lowered herself a little, careful and gentle, stopping a foxlength away so she wouldn't startle the child. Her voice softened into the warm, soothing hush only a mother could give. " Shh... Don't cry, wee one... It's alright. m'right here... " Her eyes searched the clearing, worry tightening her throat. " Are ye alone out here? "

She dipped her head, expression tender and open. The kit was so young, so young... The age of her own brood, she thought. " M'Wavesong... " she murmured, offering her name like a lifeline. Her ears pressed back in concern. " It's okay, love. Yer safe now... " The unspoken question hung heavy in her chest. Where is yer mother, an' what happened t'you, wee heart?

JASPERKIT ⭑✶⋆.˚ TITLE
meow

The kit was too young to understand the emotions she felt was abandonment. The sweet scent of her mother was gone, the food that filled her belly leaving a trail around the kit that she could not follow. She could not follow, and it was scary. Didnt her mother know that she was scared and weeped when left when just Jasper?

A strange face approached, her voice gentle, Like momma's... But this was not momma. The kits eyebrows raised, and her face sunk till her chin was in between her paws and against the muddy ground where soaked fur dripped water into the dirt. The stranger spoke, and she couldn't understand well. Instead... She repeated: "jasper.... jasper..." Her voice broken, quiet- tears streaming from mismatched eyes.

She tried to coo the kitten, but the kitten didn't want her. At the same time... The sweet scent radiated off of the other... A similar but different scent- but her belly growled nonetheless, and she rubbed a tiny paw over her face, trying to hide herself under small paws. maybe then the stranger would go away.

she couldn't help herself though. Her paws wobbled as she stood, closing the gap before pressing her face into the strangers leg, wiping tears from her cheek onto soft fur, before curling her head into the strangers leg. "Jasper," she whined again, big blue mismatched eyes looking to the other, with her own ears folding backwards. She didn't know many words, but, she was scared. She was scared, and alone. And she didn't think she'd ever woken up without her sibling before either.

The ocean is in my soul,
And it's pulling me back to shore.
I'm letting go of the weight that's dragging me down.

Her heart lurched so violently she thought it might tear itself free. Every instinct screamed at her, protect this kit, hold this kit, do not let this one slip away too. Where was the mother? Why wasn't she here? Had predators... Fox, hawk, stoat, you name it... Had they taken her the way fate had taken so many from Wavesong? Shellkit's tiny body flashed across her mind, the memory sharp enough to draw blood. Her beautiful baby, slipping from her piece by fragile piece. And also her sweet Coral, smiling even in the dark. Two kits named after the sea... Two kits that she had to return to the sea too... And Troutkit, her living heart, her breath, she would fight teeth and stars before she lost him to anything....

And this one... This newborn stranger with no one.

" Jasper... " she breathed, the name tumbling from her lips like a prayer. The kit's soft, broken repetitions had carved it straight into her heart. Was it her name? Was it all she had left? A tiny gasp escaped Wavesong as the kit finally pushed herself forward, burying her trembling body into the bicolored fur at Wavesong's chest. That was all it took. Her entire being shattered. Tears spilled freely, warm, unstoppable droplets dampening Jasper's fur. " Shh... Shh now, ye wee guppy... " she whispered, voice breaking even in its softness. " Yer gonna be jus' fine... Don'tcha worry. Mama Wavesong is here. She's here t'keep ye safe an' sound. "

Her paw curled protectively over the kit's back, gentle as a breeze yet firm as the river's bank. Stars, she was tiny. Too tiny. Too thin. " Ye look hungry... " Wavesong murmured, her throat tight. She had lost a child. She had been forced to give one away. She had watched Adder vanish with a husk instead of a daughter. Fate had taken and taken and taken... But then fate placed this fragile creature at her paws. No, not Shellkit. Nothing could be. But a heart in need was still a heart. A kit alone was still a kit deserving of love. Wavesong bent, pressing her cheek to the top of the tiny skull.

" Ye can come with me, wee Jasper... " she promised in a trembling whisper. " I'll get ye food... I'll keep ye warm… Ye'll curl up with me wee guppies an' ye won't ever be alone again. " The tears would not stop. She didn't try to stop them. " Would ye like that...? A bit o' warmth... An' some milk...? "she coaxed softly, brushing a paw along Jasper's spine. She lowered her head, grooming the child's tiny crown with slow, steady strokes.

" Yer goin' t'be okay... " she murmured into the kit's fur.
