Some time had passed now since she had run into her daughters at the edge of twoleg place and almost daily now Duchess found herself returning back to that same spot, sometimes during the day and othertimes at night but always in hopes of seeing her daughters again or perhaps even... Him. She had started to expand beyond just the same spot eventually too, pacing back and forth along roughly where SkyClan's border was. She didn't want to be caught prowling close by other SkyClan cats as she was sure she'd be met with hostility and that they'd make it even more difficult to see her family once they knew she was around here too, but she also couldn't help but try and get closer and closer, hoping that by daring to do so maybe one of her daughters would spot her and come running or scent her even and come over for a greeting. She couldn't help wanting to see them but she knew too that it was selfish. They were apprentices now and had their own mentors and training to attend, how she just wished she could be a part of it even for just a whiskers' length of a moment of each day.

The last rays of the day were beginning to slowly fade with the setting sun and again Duchess found her paws leading her to the border where she knew SkyClan territory laid beyond. She landed silently and ever so gracefully onto the grass below as she padded closer before settling herself down in a nice spot by the start of the tree line where fireflies danced in the setting darkness, their warm glow reflecting off of her golden collar and shining like stars in her eyes as she watched them fly by. It felt like not that long ago that there had been a night much like this one, except on that night she hadn't been alone. His caramel-honey coloured eyes rippled through her memories an she wondered. Would he ever look at her now the same way he had then?

A notable length of time had passed since the catastrophe of the gathering and the changes that came afterward. Ever dutiful, Milkheart took to his tasks eagerly. He still had his worries of course, and he wanted to soon find time to work out some solutions to them. Once upon a time, even he had wondered how life would be if there was no need to come to this new territory but even thinking that way somehow felt... Wrong? He couldn't quite ascertain why that was, he just felt like he knew it to be true. The old home of Skyclan was not perfect either, there were many troubles in that place too, just very different ones. In the same way it had many opportunities, yet very different ones too.

Even if he was busy with his duties, Milkheart had a lot of time to look inward. Life was taking the bad with the good. What measured the worth of someone was how they responded to both the tough times and the peaceful times and Milkheart wanted to be worthy of being a Warrior, but also worthy of being good, to be inspiring in ways that mattered.

So it always gnawed at him that he wasn't capable of being inspiring to... Her. To Duchess.

Every day, and even more so recently, Milkheart thought of what he perceived himself as having done wrong in regards to that entire situation over what he had actually done right. If he was more of the cat he wished he could be then his daughters would still have their mother, they would never have lost her for any reason to begin with. Milkheart had learned long ago that the right decisions were often not so easily made. Still, he made them all the same. He made those decisions so that no other would have to burden themselves with making them, Duchess especially.

After one of his many trips out hunting and gathering, Milkheart decided to take a walk, just a small patrol of the territory. He passed by once strange landmarks, now having grown familiar. He saw once odd foliage that was now common to him. As the light of the sun lowered beyond the limits of the small piece of the world he called home he saw a sight all too familiar, bewildering in its presence.

Fireflies.

Not just any kind of fireflies, fireflies that had also existed in the old territory. Milkheart was in awe of the chances, but what gave him pause was not only the sight of them, but their movements. They moved in a way that was burned into his memory, in such flight patterns that he already knew, ones he had seen before many, many moons ago... Before he knew it, Milkheart had in a sense been hypnotized by his past, he too moved in the exact same way he once did in the same scenario back then. The only difference was the shrubbery, trees, sounds and smells around him as well as now being older.

This night was near enough identical to one that would change Milkheart forever. There was only one piece missing. So in a sense this felt like a cruel joke. On that night so long ago he wasn't alone. Her aquamarine eyes radiant in his memories and he wondered... Would she ever look at him now the same way she had then?

Little did he know, he was now sitting back to back with the one piece of his heart's puzzle he thought lost forever.

I tell you what— you better not be bringing bad vibes,
Leave your troubles behind, then I'll be alright
