Hazykit slips out of the nursery, pale eyes fluttering towards the sky. It's difficult to discern the stars, even as the trees loose their leaves onto the ground, but tonight it's... easier. Strangely so. The stars seem to float not just beneath the treelimbs but... in camp, in slow blinking fashions. The mottled girl lets the surprise and confusion into her usually dull expression, ears perking as she steps further into the swath of stars.

One lands on her nose, and she notes with a quiet tone, "The stars have... wings?" How peculiar. Perhaps that's how they stay afloat in the night's blanket.

Echokit lazily meanders around the edge of the nursery, choosing to take a stroll after he had woken up a bit earlier from a nap than he would have preferred.
"Hm?"
He raises a brow towards the entrance as there seemed to be something of vague interest out there. It didn't sound like a big deal since there wasn't some sort of commotion like the last few times. Probably for the best, he could do without some drama for a good while.

Wandering outside, Echokit notices the lights, the bugs- in fact these lights were bugs! He had heard of these before, he didn't recall their names exactly, and he thought they were rather rare!

"Huh..."
Echokit's own usually sour and annoyed expression was replaced with quiet contentment and wonder for once.
"Cool."
He sniffed at these strange luminous things until he heard Hazykit's voice speak of the stars having wings.
"What? Nuh-uh, they might look like it but these aren't stars they're-"

chomp

Echokit had accidentally bitten on one that flitted past his muzzle. He uncomfortably spits it out and it plops onto the ground as he shudders at the taste.
"Bugs... They're bugs."
Not the most pleasant thing to eat, either.

Fawnkit follows soon after her sister, curious at what she has discovered. It sounds like Hazykit is fascinated by something and Fawnkit needs to see for herself!

Her eyes widen as she spots the lights dancing in front of the nursery - she doesn't care if they're just bugs, they intrigue her nonetheless, the flicking lights turning on and off grabbing all her attention. She doesn't even realise it and she's pouncing after them, attempting to catch them. Though, mainly, she's falling back on the ground empty-pawed. She doesn't mind since she's having fun anyway.

"Hazykit!" she laughs, looking at her sister. "There's so many! How many do you think we can catch?" Just as Fawnkit says this, one of the bugs lands on a blade of grass in front of her and Fawnkit pounces at it. It lights up beneath her paws and when she lets go, flies away once again towards the night sky.

The one on her nose floats away as she's joined by others. Her gaze remains almost-bright as she watches Fawnkit chase after the little stars, energetic despite the time of day. Hazykit partially smiles, though she loses it when Echokit begins to correct her... only to regain it when one of the bugs lands in his mouth mid-speech. She laughs, a bell-like noise, and says, "Oh... I bet you wish they were stars." At best it's playful teasing, at worst she is mocking the misfortune the kit keeps having. In any case, Fawnkit does well to redirect her attention.

"How many..." she tries to gauge how many even exist in camp right now. It's difficult, as they flutter and blink endlessly. For the few seconds she tries, Hazykit believes that she's must've counted the same bug thrice over, even. She looks back to her littermate, "First to ten gets a pigeon for breakfast...!" The young girl goads, knowing her sister's affinity towards the bird.

Victorykit had fallen asleep in camp in camp while trying to eavesdrop on some warriors. They hadn't been talking about anything especially... interesting, but one never knew! She hadn't even realized she fell asleep until she was startled awake by voices nearby, the sun no longer in the sky. Blinking her eyes open, she tried to clear her bleary eyes, but they couldn't seem to focus. She thought she saw lights floating around camp. She blinked again, hard, but they were still there. Before she can panic, however, she catches Echokit correcting Hazykit on what the lights were. She turned her attention to them just in time to watch her brother spit out one of the glowing things with a disgusted expression. She can't help herself, she laughed aloud.

Certain, finally, that she wasn't seeing things, she bounded towards where the other kits are gathering just in time to hear Hazykit propose a challenge her sister.
"Ten? Easy!"
Victorykit declared with a grin, eyes narrowed in determination. She couldn't pass up an opportunity to show off for the warriors - and the other kits.

Turning, she tried to track the movement of the weird glowing bugs. She watched intently as one fluttered slowly past her face, making a slow descent to the earth. She got low to the ground, wriggling her haunches excitedly until finally she pounced, lashing out with one paw to knock it from the air and drag it down under her waiting paws. She landed heavily, then lifted a paw to examine her catch. She recoiled upon discovering not a bug, but a smear of glowing guts across her pawpads.
"Oh..."
she frowned, ears flattening to her head. Instinctively, she peered around for her parents, waiting for them to scold her for her recklessness. With a pang of regret, then relief, she remembers that they're gone.

Fawnkit's eyes widen at Hazykit's competition. Pigeon for breakfast? Well now she has to win!!!

She has already caught one before, so now she only needs to catch nine more. "Alright, Hazykit!" she exclaims determined. She crouches and watches the bugs with focused eyes, though the flickering lights start to make her head dizzy, the pressure of competition making her too careful. Instead of jumping around and catching them, even on accident, Fawnkit is frozen to the ground, attempting to focus on one particular bug. Which, of course, proves impossible with them flicking off and then appearing elsewhere.

Frustrated, she lashes her tail and bats at the air in front of her - only to be met with a little something crashing against her paw. She looks at what it could be and sure enough, now that she has stopped trying, she had caught one, and by accident! "That makes two!" she giggles, cheerful yet again.

"Shuddup, Vic."
Echokit snickered oddly, not really offended per se by the laughter, more so trying to understand it. It was a silly situation to be in and when he gave it thought the timing was actually kind of funny. It was less about one-upping anyone and more about just... Being in the moment. That was what Echokit hoped to believe.
"I bet you can't eat one with a straight face!"
Was... Was that a playful joke and dare? From Echokit, of all cats? What was the world coming to?!

In any case, Echokit did his best to clean the taste of these bugs from his mouth by repeatedly licking one of his paws. Disturbingly, they weren't the worst thing he's ever tasted, but he wasn't about to say that. Did he wish they were actually stars at all? Well.. Hard to say. If they were stars, and stars were cats that had passed on, then this would be a completely different sort of scene wouldn't it?

Tilting his head, Echokit raised a brow at Victorykit's fearful reaction, she definitely hit the bug, but if the mission she set herself was to just catch it and not splatter it, then, sure, she did it wrong-

Oh. Right.

"Take it easy Vic, try again, just gentler this time."
Echokit, sounding probably a lot kinder than he had noticed, gestured to another one of the fireflies that had lazily floated by his sister.

Hazykit watches as the others take to the challenge with ease and excitement, reclining by Echokit. Her half-lidded eyes remain so, even with amusement, as Victorykit crashes her paw down on a soon-to-be corpse, muddying her paw with the poor thing's innards. The pale tortoiseshell stifles a laugh, especially as Echokit makes attempts to settle his sibling's frustration and direct her to trying again. Fawnkit isn't that far behind Victorykit, though her attention can't seem to hold to any single bug. Eventually she just lashes out a paw, and a small firefly falls to the ground, by complete happenstance.

"Good job, Fawnkit!" She cheers for her littermate, tail curling around her torso. Oh, she's going to have to find a pigeon for this, isn't she?

Frecklekit watched the others with wide, shining eyes, his whiskers trembling as something warm fluttered in his chest. A smile, small at first, then genuine had crept onto his face as the ' stars ' floated lazily around them. Bugs, Echokit had called them. Just bugs. But to Frecklekit, they were... Magical. He stepped forward on hesitant paws, each movement cautious but drawn toward the lights like a leaf drifting toward the sun. The air shimmered with soft glows, pale gold drifting like tiny suns. Frecklekit turned slowly in a little circle, gaze tilted skyward as the star-bugs spun in lazy arcs above his head.

Before he even realized what he was doing, he pushed himself upright onto his hind legs, front paws reaching up, batting gently at one of the drifting lights. A tiny giggle, small, startled, bubbling, slipped out of him before he could stop it. The sound felt strange, unfamiliar... But good. " They're beautiful... " he whispered, voice full of breathless wonder. " They make the dark light up... " He turned to look at the others, eyes sparkling and promptly toppled onto his backside with a soft thump. He snorted, embarrassed but oddly delighted. The clearing was alive, Hazykit and Fawnkit bounding after the bugs, squealing and competing, Victorykit leaping in with her fierce determination.

For a moment, everything felt normal. Bright. Safe. But then he saw it, the way Victorykit recoiled when she killed a bug, the way her shoulders hunched, bracing for a scolding that never came. The way he once had. The way all of them had. Something twisted sharply in his stomach. A memory. A reflex. A hurt he didn't have words for. He swallowed once, hard. He wanted to tell her... To assure her that their parents weren't here. That no one was lurking, waiting to strike her down with disappointment. That she didn't have to be afraid to disappoint anymore.

His throat felt tight, but he forced himself to speak.

" Y... Yeah. Just try again, Vic. " he meowed softly, almost shyly. His voice wasn't loud, but it was gentle, warm in a way he rarely let himself be. His tail tip twitched as he looked at her, green eyes softening. No scolding. No judgment. Just encouragement. Something he was still learning how to give... And how to accept.

Victorykit felt a rising pressure in her chest, a roaring in her ears. The guts of the bug she'd killed still glowed on her paw. Somewhere, distant, she could hear the murmur of the other kits. Fawnkit and Hazykit, having normal, naive kit fun. Everything fell away around her, piece by piece. She felt the world shifting under her, like the ground was tilting, threatening to knock her off balance. She was sliding, falling-

"Take it easy Vic, try again, just gentler this time."

Echokit's voice broke through the ringing in her ears. She inhaled sharply as the world snapped back into focus. The bug guts glowed on her paw, but all around her the rest drifted lazily through the air. The world had not ended. Her parents had not appeared to scold and belittle and torment. She blinked hard. The meaning of Echokit's words sank in. Try again? Was it that easy? Frecklekit - she hadn't even realized her eerily quiet brother was there - chimed in softly, repeating the suggestion. Try again. She felt her breath hitch in her throat. Hot, angry tears gathered in her eyes, and she indulged herself for a heartbeat before blinking them away. Her pelt prickled with shame, embarrassment pinned her ears to her skull.

"Shut up,"
she snarled, staring down at her paws. She didn't understand why she was angry, all she knew was that she was.
"This is a stupid game anyway."
As if to prove her disdain, she sat back on her haunches and reached up with both paws until a firefly dared get too close. She smashed it, the poor unsuspecting thing, between her paws. Something twisted in her gut, a sickly feeling she'd never experienced before. Then, glowing viscera on both paws, she flicked her tail and stomped her way back toward the nursery.

You try to do everything in your power to avoid Hazykit. Though sometimes you accept that your paths are meant to cross, of course you keep your distance all the same. Clinging to the opposite side of her, staring up at these mockery of stars in disappointment. "Just bugs" you mutter to yourself as you feel your shoulders sag.

Despite the disappointment there is a desire to rise to meet the challenge set by Hazykit. Leaning up on shaky hind limbs you swat at one, only to quickly find your place on the earth again. Heaving a heavy, tired breath from exhaustion you think that'll be the end of your adventures tonight. That is, until the bug you failed to kill gets close enough to land on your nose! Swatting away at it those fluttering wings tickle your muzzle, it twitches and-

"Achoo!"

You find yourself sneezing on the cat next to you. "...Sorry" Unable to meet their gaze out of sheer embarrassment you instead brush your paw against your nose and decide that actually these bugs are super interesting and you should stare at them instead.
