Being a kit was very strange. One day you were simply thrust into the world and subjected to the grueling task of learning everything. Mothkit thought they were doing decently at learning. They'd been outside a few times with their family, met some of the other cats in the clan. They had learned some about weather, how sometimes it was cold and sometimes it was wet and sometimes it was both. They hated that kind of weather the most. There was also food. Food was weird. They'd seen their mother eat food since they were born, but they were still struggling to wrap their mind around it. Why would they eat food if they could just have milk? Milk was good. Milk was easy. Food was confusing and messy and hard to bite even though Mama had shown them so many times.

In all of this learning, the most important thing Mothkit had learned was just how much there was to learn. Whenever Mama let them outside of the nursery, it felt like learning how to walk all over again, there was so much new information to process. The world outside their den was huge and bright and cold and bustling with other cats. There were trees taller than anything they'd thought possible. The ground was soft with a layer of pine needles (which they did not like because they often stuck in their fur). Sometimes they saw the warriors and apprentices climbing in trees, which seemed very exciting. But they'd have to learn that too! At least that would be fun...

Mothkit turned to their sibling with a slight tilt to their head.
"Climb tree?"
They wondered. (Talking. That was another thing they were learning. They didn't like talking too much, unless it was to Pearkit.)

Much like their sibling, Pearkit had a hard time getting used to being alive. It was one thing to just be and another to have to exist - to walk and understand and talk. With Mothkit, Pearkit didn't have to learn, they could just be together in silence, in understanding of one another - not with words, but words were overrated anyway. What Mothkit and Pearkit had was something else, something more personal. Something special.

When mama took them outside, Mothkit felt the same anxiety Pearkit did, when they were with mama, Pearkit felt the same excitement Mothkit did. When they slept, both kittens shared each other's warmth.

And now, Pearkit felt curiosity tugging at their paws, their eyes naturally drifting towards the trees. But this is where their own anxiety won over, the fear of falling off and hurting themselves, the fear of getting suck midway through with no way down. The fear of being observed and laughed at.

Instead, Pearkit pointed towards an easier obstacle with their tail. "Climb rock?"

Mothkit felt a pang in their chest, something sharp that made them want to flatten their small body to the ground and hide their face. Fear was the feeling, they realized. Mothkit frowned. Fear of what? Turning their attention to Pearkit, they realized their sibling was glancing fretfully from the trees toward a large rock in camp. Mothkit blinked.
"Rock?"
They were disappointed. They didn't want to climb a rock. They wanted to climb a tree. But the fear... It must have been from Pearkit. And they couldn't intentionally scare their sibling, right? They did everything together.

Finally, with a small nod, Mothkit agreed.
"Rock, then tree."
Maybe if Pearkit saw that climbing the rock was fun, they would be happy to climb a tree with them! Bounding towards the rock, Mothkit reached up and tried to dig their needle-sharp claws into the side. They only scraped against the stone. With a frown, they tried to propel themself up with their back legs, only to crash back down to the ground with a small grunt. They scowled upwards. Rocks were hard to climb!

"Rock, then tree." Pearkit agreed. They could practice first on the rock and then they would be confident enough to scale the tree. Sound logic.

First they only watched as Mothkit tried to scale the rock then jump up it with no awail. But, if the rock was this difficult, how did the rest of the cats climb up the trees with such ease? There must have been some kind of a trick, Pearkit was sure of it. Looking at their sibling, Pearkit felt less and less confident about their plan, afraid that they were already failing this part - the part that was meant to be easier.

Just then, Pearkit noticed something - a small shadow on the rock, but what was creating it? They approached the rock, pawing at it, until they found it - a little protrusion coming out of it - not big, but maybe big enough... and there, another one! Pearkit wanted to explain to Mothkit, but struggled to find the right word. Hold seemed too vague, grab too confusing and scale too unfamiliar. Instead, they chose the simplest of them all - "Look."

Pearkit placed their paw on the protruding part of the rock, as if it was just a step, and grabbed onto another one. Soon they became scaling the rock. But as their last paw left the ground, the weight of their body became too much, their sense of balance not yet developed properly, and they tumbled back down, flat on their stomach. "Ow..." they sniffled. "Rock... mean."

Mothkit watched from where they'd landed on their haunches as Pearkit felt their way along the rock's side. They followed their sibling's command and scanned the side. They thought they could see what they meant - small... bumps along the rock that could be used to pull themselves up. Pearkit began to climb using them, and managed to get three paws off the ground before lifting the last paw and tumbling down. They felt their belly tense up as their sibling hit the ground. With a start, they surged forward to press their nose to Pearkit's shoulder. Once they were sure their sibling was okay, they helped them to their paws.
"Rock mean!"
They echoed.

Face set in determination, Mothkit turned their attention back to the rock. They would defeat the mean rock, if it was the last thing they did! They eyed it wearily for a long moment before reaching up and grabbing for the bumps Pearkit had pointed out. They managed to wrap their paws around one, then another. Both back paws still steadied them from the ground as they looked upward. They could see their next pawhold, but to reach it would require them to lift their back paws. They tried, tensing their muscles, envisioning lifting a paw. But nothing happened. It was like they were frozen. They took a deep breath, then tried again. This time, they felt a paw lift up a whisker before they let it fall back to the ground. Elation rushed through them. They could do it! Narrowing their eyes, they lifted their paw again, and this time managed to haul themselves up until all four paws were up on the rock. From behind, they imagined they would look like a piece of freshkill splayed out against the rock. But that didn't matter. They were climbing, slowly but surely, until they finally hoisted themself up and onto the top.

An enormous smile spread across their face as they took in the sight of camp from their new vantage point (realistically, about a taillength off the ground). It looked so different! They turned and beamed down at their sibling.
"Did it!!"
They crowed.

Pearkit didn't sniffle on the ground for too long. Determination pushed them to their paws again, whether their own or Mothkit's didn't matter. What mattered was that they got up from the ground again.

Now that Mothkit had seen their idea, they, too, decided to give it a try. But unlike Pearkit, Mothkit held on stronger, having seen their sibling's tumble and learning from it. Pearkit felt like it's only been a moment 'till Mothkit made it to the very top, standing proud on top of it. "Did it!!!" Pearkit repeated the words, excitement washing over them. Sitting on the ground, in Mothkit's shadow, felt fulfilling enough - they didn't even feel like getting up themselves, already feeling the thrill of being up there from down on the ground.

They waited a moment to let the feeling soak in, before asking, "Tree now?" Pearkit didn't feel confident at all in climbing a tree, as they haven't even climbed the rock by themself, but they would do anythinig for Mothkit. Even if it was just sitting on the ground watching them have fun, that was enough for them.
