{$title} Adderfang complains about SkyClan over breakfast and suggests they train like Hawkstar mentioned her clan does.
adder-redonefloaty02.png

Takes place a few days after this thread. The idea is for them to have a discussion, decide whose capable of teaching others, and who needs to be taught. After which actual training can happen at our leisure. If you're interested, throw up a post or tag me!

Fish stench.

The insult lingered on his tongue like seawater.

He wasn't quick to forget the warm reception their so-called neighbors had given them—quick to flaunt their authority, turning up their noses as though they'd been nothing more than a speck of dirt beneath their paws.

Perhaps he was too easily angered these days, as Wave had pointed out—all bristles and spines whenever something rubbed him the wrong way. While he hadn't started with hostility, he had been agitated enough to show his spines to those SkyClanners, as they called themselves.

But there was something to learn from the encounter. That stone-faced molly—Hawkstar. She had spoken of training. Not just that, but that she had overseen the training of all her warriors, each one excelling in 'assessments.' Now that, was an idea.

Adderfang had taken note of other details, too—how fit they looked, the confidence in which Hawkstar carried herself, even the way they moved suggested structure and discipline.

It was admirable. And also… concerning. Because when he looked at their own, what did he see?

Disorganization. Uncertainty. Lack of communication.

The way the envoy had played out had not painted RiverClan in a good light. They looked weak. And he couldn't even say it was just on the surface.

How many of his clanmates even knew how to properly unsheathe their claws? How would they fare in a fight if it ever came to one? If their leader thought them easy targets what was to stop SkyClan from testing their new boundaries?

He wasn't going to sit around and wait for that to happen.

Bringing it up with Pike should have been the next step, but… things between them weren't exactly in a place where he could do that. Still, something needed to be done.

So, he spoke up once the morning had settled. After everyone had finished licking the remnants of breakfast off their whiskers.

"I know I can't be the only one uneasy about the news of another one of these 'clans' nestled against our border." His eyes flicked between those present. There was so much to lose if he couldn't get them to take this seriously.

"I don't trust them to hold to their word and stay on their side. If prey gets scarce they may very well decide to expand their borders. Especially when they already think us weak—that Hawkstar made it very clear she thinks we're beneath them."

"I think we should train just as they claim to." His tail lashed against the dirt, carving shallow grooves in the soft soil. Adderfang hoped he wasn't alone in his desire to be prepared. "I have experience patrolling and defending a territory of my own. I'm willing to share what I know. Could anyone else do the same?"

𓆟 Chocolate ticked tabby w/ amber eyes. Peppered with scars. Deep gash across the right side of his face exposing one canine slightly. Missing left ear.
𓆟 Deep gravelly voice that might unsettle others.
𓆟 Would and will kill a man.
𓆟 Peaceful and healing powerplay permitted. For other powerplays, DM.
𓆟 Fur smells faintly of river reeds and damp earth.

✦ Pine hadn't been there to meet this 'Skyclan'– good thing he wasn't, after what he'd heard about it. He was supportive of Pikestar, despite his many… many… flaws. He was still young, just a boy put on the throne by the power's that apparently be. With the right guidance around him, he'd grow into a fine leader…. Probably. Hopefully.

He looks up as Adderfang begins to speak. He speaks sense, as he does often. Pine was uneasy too. But training… ? Teaching Torrentpaw what little he'd already taught had been hard enough. But he supposes there's no other way. The kids had to learn. He sighs wearily at the memory of teaching Torrentpaw, but shakes his head, instead walking over to sit down closer to Adderfang.

"I'm willing to do the same," he says mournfully. "I've had to defend…" his voice drifts off for a moment– he was going to say grave, but that seems a little too mournful, perhaps, even if it was the truth. "I've had to defend territory too, and I fought off a few stray dogs in the shipyard in my time there. Those able should know how to defend themselves. if we're to co-exist with neighbours like these."

The encounter with Skyclan had been less than pleasant. He was not alarmed that there were other clans, as a couple who had given him lives were not of Riverclan. What he did not expect was for another clan to be so mean and for no reason at all. It was Skyclan who had wandered close to their party and questioned them without offering anything in turn. It was only until his friends had introduced their group that Skyclan, particularly Hawkstar had shown interest in them. He could never forget the tone of her voice as she had spoken his name. Condescending it was, but that was not what bothered him. No, not at all. He was used to his name being spoken of badly. He was not deaf to his friends saying his was an idiot. The only reason why he was not enraged at them was because they were telling the truth. He was not bright. He was not strong, and he was certainly inexperienced when it came to being a leader. He did not need Hawkstar's presence for him to realize such a fact.

What he had wanted was for their clans to get along and a chance to speak to Hawkstar and gain some wisdom. He wanted to learn something from her to benefit his clan, to improve himself for those he was meant to lead. Unfortunately, that would not come to pass. If ever. Not after Hawkstar demanded him to submit to her agreement, practically threatening the safety of his clan by sending warriors to fight them. He could not stand for that nor will he ever. What right did Hawkstar have to treat his friends as if they were dirt. Of course, he retorted and demanded her to follow his agreement as well. While no fight had transpired, the possibly clash between their clans loomed in the back of his mind. If they were to fight Skyclan... We would lose.

He relayed her words over and over again. Assessments. She oversaw all of them. Every cat in her group that day has been trained by her. Or, at least she's watched over them. She looked strong and so did they. I would completely lose if I had to fight any cat she trained there. If I had to fight her myself? I would be dead. Skyclan's tough. I'll give them that, but I still think they're a bunch of jerks. Stupidly strong jerks. I've gotta think of something. I've gotta pick my deputy too. Ugh there's lots to do.

Pushing past the reeds with a sigh, his ears flick at the sound of Adder's voice. It is somewhat true that he is uneasy about the news of two clans that they're aware of being so close to them. Skyclan most definitely, due to their... Bad start in building relations. As for Thunderclan? He wasn't there when Peachtrot's patrol had run into them. I should them about Thunderclan. They didn't mention any leader to me, but they've gotta have one. Hopefully, Thunderclan's leader isn't a meanie. I'll go myself and bring a gift. Maybe ask if their leader is around so we can hopefully have a nice talk. I'll... Deal with that later. The ever growing tasks weigh heavily upon his back.

He quietly approaches Adderfang and the group he has assembled while he continues to voice his opinion. It is when training is mentioned that he sits next to Pine. He remains silent as the pair explain their experience.
"I can't."
There is little reason for Pine and Adderfang to be shocked by his words, as he didn't seem like a fighter in the first place. Sure, he has a scar across the brudge of his nose and a nicked ear, but that didn't mean he was any good at combat. The reason why he had them were from mishaps.

"I don't know how to fight. All I really know is running, outside of the usual hunting and swimming. I highly doubt teaching cats how to run and hide would be good for fighting."
Perhaps, he is being a bit of a downer. Maybe there is some use in learning how to run or hide from enemies, but if anyone did provide reasons why, he would only give them a strained smile. It wouldn't make him feel better. It would be the contrary, actually.
"I'll... I'll figure something out. I think you both and whoever else knows how to fight, should train the younger cats."

Adderfang addresses the elephant in the room out of nowhere, and where there is discontent and discomfort, there is Pigeon, crouched, listening. "Course. Everyone wants more than they already have. All the time." she clicks the roof of her mouth with her tongue, head tilting as she quickly shoves in her own agreement. "Leaf-bare might be coming to an end soon, but theres countless more to come... And countless times we will have to defend." she attempts a smile, but its too teeth-y, and seems too eager at the sentiment.

When Adder brings up training, shes even quicker to offer her own skills. "I can fight." her teeth click together, ears swiveling around as Pine voices his willingness to help too. "Used to. For fun. And food." fighting was just something that ran through her blood, the anger that boils within a good emotion to use. "Shes full of herself. We can't afford to be soft. Who knows how many other clans there are at this point?" a quick jab at the Skyclan leader, she wasn't personally on the patrol that had met them, but also slightly towards Pike, accentuated with a quick glance towards their leader... He may be so in title, but he needs to be able to prove it in battle, too. And who else, out there, were fully grown and couldn't fight? Well, she could maybe pick a few by name who looked like they couldn't. "Everyone should learn. Not just the young." she shakes her head, not feeling bad the slightest.

"Do I need to give examples for my own ability to fight or is my pelt enough?" The dark tom approached on heavy steps, head up and expression light despite the serious discussion, "What's this about another clan? They aren't getting too close to our territory are they?" They had just claimed this spot, the scents stale, the area untouched, there was nothing here before them and already vultures were circling to get at the scraps of their settlement - it was disgusting, it made his teeth show in a sneer at the idea of already having to fight of other cats but he'd do it without hesitation; this was their home now, some new 'clan' wasn't going to change that. "I've kept my own spaces secure before in the shipyard, not that it did a damned bit of good against nature itself." The shed had been a solace taken too quickly from the crew, "We should arrange something to watch our borders for more carrion pickers." Training the clan was a good enough suggestion on its own from Pine, arranging patrols as Adderfang suggested was another; it was times like these that he was thankful for more sensible cats around who shared his similar view of the world.

"I intend to teach my kits to defend themselves." They would not be victims of circumstance, they would be able to fight for their lives, their right to live, he would instill in them this perseverance whether they fought it or not. Smokewreath was not going to be around forever, he wasn't going to be able to protect them their entire lives; one day they may even leave his side to find their own path away from RiverClan, or perhaps with the clan structure they would stay - he couldn't find it in him to force them to remain if they grew wandering hearts but he would ensure they could thrive more than survive. His lone orange eye drifts to Pikestar, admitting in honest his faults and failings and willing to allow those more skilled to take the reigns but the dark tom shook his head slowly, "Knowing when to leave a fight is as important as starting one, but you....Pigeon is right. Not just our young need to know to defend themselves. Our leader should be able to speak with his claws as well when needed."
He was fine with the tabby preaching his peaceful ways but when things got dirty and civility was out the window he didn't want to see those nine lives tested, he believed they were there and he wanted them to stay there.
"What did you call the rank between kit and warrior again? Apprentice? A trainee sort of thing? I think you should be mine, Pikestar. I'll go easy on you, I promise."
