temp priv. tw for descriptions of a dead cat body and wounds/injuries!

Rowanpaw asks the first two warriors she sees to come with her, pleading with them for silence and urgency– she does not say why. Especially not to Magnoliapeak, whose sharp amber eyes see more than Rowanpaw likes. She does not want her to see the split between her and her mother. Does not know what she'd do with it, if she knew. So Magnoliapeak and Seafoambelly get the half truth, that they have to bury the body to avoid attracting predators.

The walk to the body is quiet, though Rowanpaw is hardly present enough to hear anything said if something was. If either of them attempt to speak to her, she does not hear it. The forest looms over her oppressively, not at all like the forest she's come to know.

They follow the scent of blood to the source and find a cat laying in the grass, bloodied, wounded. Rowanpaw stares at it from the edge of the small clearing for a moment, and another– she could turn around. She could tell the warriors to pick her up and she'd never have to touch her, would never have to learn the truth, and wouldn't it be a mercy not to know? She swallows. No, she is… she is a medicine cat. A servant of the stars, not… not a servant of her mother.

She moves towards body and says, "stay back for a moment, please," to the warriors accompanying her. "I have to make sure it's safe."

Ironic, really. Warriors are more use for living things. The dead belong to Medicine cats. Standing over the body, she carefully sniffs the wounds– no poison. No rot. And still warm. Oh, mother, she thinks, what have you done now?

But the body doesn't smell like Serpentberry. If the wounds were left by her claws, surely it would've left a scent of herbs, of something? So what then? Perhaps the mother was wounded by some other creature, and Serpentberry stumbled on the family and just… she suppresses a shudder as the realization hits. Serpentberry had left this cat to die. To slowly bleed out. She'd taken her kits and left her to die. She nearly throws up again, but swallows roughly, forcing it back down her throat. She gives herself five seconds to steady her expression before turning back to the warriors who'd come with her.

"She was attacked by something, maybe a fox or a rogue– we should let Juniperstar know to have patrols keep an eye out," she says. She says nothing about Serpentberry, her lie, her negligence. It's... it's not important. Not right now. "Let's… let's bring the body back. She deserves a proper burial, and the kits– the kits should know that we honoured their mother."

Magnoliapeak meets Rowanpaw's request evenly. Her pale yellow eyes scan the medicine cat apprentice's expression, but she finds nothing more than desperation inside. But desperation... For what? Why had it been Magnoliapeak that she had selected for this task? She supposes it's just random chance, as Seafoambelly is also chosen to join them. That it hadn't been intentional that Magnoliapeak was chosen and Rowanpaw would have had anyone else if her desperation had not run so thick. It's no secret that Rowanpaw's mother and herself have never gotten along. Perhaps it's because there are parts of Serpentberry that she sees within herself. Perhaps it's that fact that unnerves her, keeps her twisting and turning in her nest at night if she grants it any more than a passing thought. As they travel in silence, she rolls it over in her mind. Does Rowanpaw fear the same things?

Russet brushes tortoiseshell as Rowanpaw surges ahead, asking them to stand back. Magnoliapeak says nothing as she stands beside Seafoambelly, though the air is thick with discomfort. Magnoliapeak feels her fur bristle as Rowanpaw nears the corpse without any accompaniment. As if there might be a viper waiting to bite her the moment she touches it. It is not lost on Magnoliapeak the way that Rowanpaw stiffens and retches, but her expression does not betray her. In fact, Rowanpaw turns to meet their eyes with the came even coolness. Steady. Magnoliapeak controls the rising unease in her body, not wanting to betray what begrudging trust the medicine cat apprentice has placed in her.

The warrior nods as Rowanpaw states that the mother had been attacked by something. That much seems obvious, but she wonders what about this has made Rowanpaw seem so disquieted. Hasn't she seen this sort of thing before? "I'll let Juniperstar know once we've returned," she dips her head in acknowledgement, and then steps forward to nudge the dead mother so that she can pick her up with the help of Seafoambelly. Now, alarm crackles through her like lightning. She is unable to keep her eyes from widening. 'She's still warm,' she thinks with alarm. Magnoliapeak quickly flattens her expression- and her fur- when she turns to her clanmates, half-carrying the body while she waits for Seafoambelly's help.

"We should hurry," she mews, no tinge of former alarm in her voice, just an advisement. Magnoliapeak knows this is not the place to speak to Rowanpaw.

She is no stranger to death.

She's met it first-hand, danced alongside with it and tempted it. Death is her family, her guide, her weight to bear. So when Rowanpaw said she was needed to help retrieve a poor loner's body, Seafoambelly felt no churning in her gut, no fear or anger or sadness.

It was simply another day.

She followed the young medicine cat apprentice, trying to not let her fur brush against Magnoliapeak's for fear of breaking this odd silence and trepidation in the air. Rowanpaw inspected the body, a poor innocent soul that died here on ThunderClan's territory. Another tragedy. Another day. When the all clear was given, she padded forward alongside Magnoliapeak, helping to lift the still warm, still pliant body onto her shoulders.

Wavepaw's body was warm and soft and she could swear there was still breath in those little lungs and she carried and carried but it didn't help-

She looked to Rowanpaw, trying not to let the bile rising in her throat spill out alongside her words.

"You're right. They deserve to say goodbye."

Rowanpaw nods in response to both Magnoliapeak and Seafoambelly, letting the older warriors take the body. Her leg is acting up, and whether it's stress or something else, she isn't sure. It just hurts. She grits her teeth and follows the others through the undergrowth, the silence heavy. They would've noticed that the body is still warm. Magnoliapeak… something had flashed in her eyes, unfamiliar, but unsettling. A knowing or some sense of understanding.

By the time they make it back to camp, it's gotten late. Rowanpaw goes to find Juniperstar, giving a quick bow of her head in greeting. She's still not entirely happy with Juniperstar for not punishing Owlbark for the murder of that Skyclan cat. But she's the only leader they have.

"The kits Serpentberry brought home… we've brought back their mother's body," she says quietly. "I thought– I thought it wouldn't be wise to leave her out there. The smell would attract predators, and the kits… they deserve a chance to say goodbye. A place to visit, if they want to. I thought… We haven't had to deal with a lot of dead bodies, but– maybe it would be a good idea to choose a place for us to rest? Somewhere those left alive can visit…?"

"and this time, she won't be forgiving"
the sun is nearing its final slumber for the day when Rowanpaw finds her... there is a shadowing to her eyes that speaks to something off. there is little left of the comraderie shared under the Fourtrees, when she was younger, in need of help as her brother dragged her home. she isn't that small girl anymore... and the way she carries herself with such a guarded weight to her shoulders says as much. aqua eyes soften all the same, glad to see her, glad to be approached- hoping that time has not drawn them so far apart as to be strangers living in the same space. her path had diverged a long time ago it felt like... and Juniperstar has grown more and more concerned with the opinions of her subjugates.

"Thank you... for doing that." no body should be let to rot when it could be put to rest. given quiet dignity to not be picked apart by whatever animal finds it next. "I think that's a good idea. Not just for the sake of her soul and her kin but... for the predator issue you mentioned as well. Do you... have a spot in mind? Somewhere close to camp, I imagine so it's easy enough to visit and tend to?"

Seafoambelly doesn't speak as they carry the dead queen back to camp. Those poor kits... she knows how it will feel for them to see their mother like this, brought back in such a fashion. She knows the hatred, betrayal, disgust, anguish they will feel.

She has seen all those looks before, on the face of her sister. She does not doubt that she will see those looks again, should Urchinspine spot her with the weight of another body upon her shoulders. She's learned to deal with the looks, the sneers, the cold shoulder from her littermate, the only surviving family she has. She will never see that flicker of love in her eyes again.

As they set the body down, Seafoambelly begins to clean the queen's fur, licking it gently into place. It's a ritual she knows well now, helping to prepare bodies for burial. ThunderClan is no stranger to loss, and Seafoambelly harbors no disgust towards the dead. Only kinship.

She listens as Juniperstar speaks, nodding to their leader as she continues her work, only speaking up once the queen's fur on her face has been cleaned, giving her the illusion of sleep.

"Should one of us fetch the kits?" she asked quietly.

URCHINSPINE ── .✷

Now I can realize,

She sits in the entrance to the nursery, eyes narrowed as the queen's body is laid on the Earth. She feels contempt seeing who carried her on her back... Seafoambelly. Hasn't she been in contact with enough dead cats? Urchin thinks to herself, ears flattening against her skull as she watches her spineless coward of a sister talking in hushed tones with Juniperstar. The kits had arrived earlier that day, she had checked in with Serpentberry shortly after their arrival to ensure they were doing alright. Serpentberry insisted that these would be her brood, which Urchin did not protest. Urchin had enough on her plate in the nursery as it was, especially with all the other foundlings that had been ushered into the clan lately.

She crosses her paws, she isn't one to be involved with death... and she's certainly done enough of her own grieving to last a lifetime. Her composure slips for a moment, remembering how warm Wavepaw was when she was laid to rest. Her body far too small for the large hole her mentor and their parents dug for her... how Oleanderwish seemed to curl instinctively around Tulipmask, a final act of fatherly protection for their son moving into the afterlife. She has to surpress a hiss watching her sister groom the queen so lovingly, so warmly. Like she wasn't the one that tore their family to pieces that day.

Urchinspine rises to her feet slowly, not facing her sister as she looks over the gathered cats. "No." She murmurs at her sister's question, eyes still not looking over her.

"They are young, let them remember their mother fondly. Without the stench of decay clinging to her fur." She almost spits out her response, pointed and angry towards her sister. Truthfully, she wants to protect the kits from loss as long as she can. She's sure they'll get used to Serpentberry and her older children, and that's the only family they need to know.

The last thing Copperstorm expected was Rowanpaw staggering into camp with a dead body. His ears pressed flat, golden eyes widening before narrowing as they found the apprentice's face. So… the kits Serpentberry had brought home had belonged to this she-cat. His chest tightened. A shame... No, a tragedy that she had died so close to their borders, so near safety, and they hadn't been able to help her. He didn't doubt for a heartbeat that she would have preferred to raise her kits herself.

He stepped forward, bowing his head with respect before speaking. " It would be a kind thing to do… to give her a place to rest. Somewhere her kits could visit, pay their respects when they're older. " His voice was low, steady, but tinged with a quiet sorrow. He turned toward Juniperstar, dipping his head once more in agreement. A burial was the wiser choice here, he was grateful that Rowanpaw had carried the body back with the other two ThunderClanners. Best buried than found by predators...

His gaze shifted between Seafoambelly and Urchinspine, weighing their words, before a frown tugged at his muzzle. " Urchinspine speaks wisely. Do we truly want the kits subjected to this? " His tail flicked once, agitation restrained beneath the surface. " Their mother's loss must already cut deep enough. Forcing them to see her body again… I don't think that's mercy. That's salt in the wound. "

Urchinspine's words stung enough. All she wanted to do was try and give the kits a chance to say goodbye to their mother! Of course she could understand her sister's fury and reasoning, but this body was still warm. She may as well have been asleep, dreaming, eventually waking up to her children's insistent mewls.

When Copperstorm agreed with her, Seafoambelly felt the stark reminder of the place she'd earned in this Clan. Pariah. Fool. He was too young to know of the deep chasm between the sisters, but the side he'd chosen was clear.

"Right," she mumbled, the words choking her throat like creeping vine. "I'll be off, then." Her tail whisked the dust behind her as she turned, leaving the cooling corpse in the care of those better suited to providing comfort.
