Fawnkit
I will be your Sword and Shield

Fawnkit couldn't wait to become an apprentice, to learn to fight and hunt and all the other wonderful things apprentices got to learn. But for now she was stuck in camp, with no one there to teach her. Or was there?

Fawnkit spotted Copperstorm lounging nearby - the Storm Guard would prove a more than adequate teacher for the day! She stretched her tiny paws and trotted over to the warrior, tail held high. "Hi Copperstorm!" she meowed at the tom. "Can you spar with me? I want to be a good apprentice and already have some experience once I turn into one!" Fawnkit widened her eyes, "Pretty pleaaaaase!" Surely no warrior could resist her cute eyes...

She stared up at Copperstorm desperately hoping he would say yes - she was not only determined to learn, but also oh so bored. Hopefully this warrior would entertain her for the time being...

So lost in thought had the Storm Guard been that he scarcely noticed the little kit toddling his way until she stood before him, eyes wide and expectant. He blinked once, almost startled, and then let out a quiet breath through his nose. Of course. There'd be a question, some request... Kits always found a way to tug at his focus whether he wanted it or not. Golden eyes slipped down to meet hers, half-lidded at first before softening. His tail gave a small flick.

" Hello, young Fawn. " he greeted with a faint grin, the corners of his muzzle quirking. Sure enough, there it was, the bold request of a spar. A snort slipped out as he tilted his head, giving her a long, considering look. He knew that he could not use his full strength, stars... He doubted he could use MUCH against a kit except... Trying not to harm her. But she seemed determined, and bored. Two very dangerous combinations to boot... " A spar, hm? " he hummed, as though weighing the idea. She was small yet, not even an apprentice… but there was no harm in humoring her with a little lesson, so long as he was careful. Very careful... Super careful...

" Alright then. " he sighed at last, extending a paw to give her a gentle prod in the shoulder. " But cut it with the cutesy eyes, kit. I suppose I can teach you a thing or two. Just enough to keep those paws quick if trouble comes sniffing. " With a grunt, he rose to his paws, stretching out his long frame, though a glimmer of amusement lingered in his eyes.

Aw yeah! Fawnkit was proud of herself - she managed to convince the Storm Guard to spar with her! Her paws tingled with excitement, her tail alert. This wasn't just playfighting with the other kittens, this was training with a real warrior. It didn't matter that Copperstorm was so much bigger than her, or that his paws could probably strike her down with one swift strike. He was a seasoned warrior and she was going to learn something from him.

She crouched into what she thought was a battle stance, lowering her front paws, but keeping her hind ready to pounce, waiting for her sparring partner, or opponent, to move. In her mind she looked fierce, though in reality her tail was sticking up, her paws uneven and her gaze not fixed at her opponents movements. "What do I need to do, Copperstorm?" she asked, ears perked. She could almost picture herself on the battlefield, protecting her Clan. She hoped Copperstorm would see how seerious she was, determined and eager to learn.

Her muscles tense, she tried to keep steady - but her body wasn't trained for this and her paws wobbled a bit with the effort. Still, she stayed still - this was her chance to prove she was more than just a kitten roaming the camp. Her eyes narrowed as she awaited Copperstorm's instructions.

Golden hues watched intently as the young kit stood determinedly, his gaze patient and steady and his tail flicking once with a hint of amusement. Ah, Stars... She was so small. But there was fire beneath that gaze, no doubt about it. IT reminded him of himself, once upon a time... Only they hadn't been allowed to play like this. Claws had been real. Teeth had been sharp. And a mistake had been punished. He would never repeat that cycle. With none of the kits that came to ThunderClan. They wouldn't have to carry that weight.

A chuckle rumbled through the air before he dipped his head down to her level, a grin tugging at his mouth. " First things first, Fawnkit. " he drawled, half-teasing, half-serious. " Plant those paws firm. If I blew at you right now, you'd topple over like al eaf. " he commented, tapping a paw at her forelegs and shifting her stance with surprising care for a tom his size. " Spread your weight. Balance is everything, without it you're just waiting to fall. " he told her, a frown to his face.

Straightening up again, he studied her posture for a moment with a light tilt of the head. " Second, your eyes. Don't feel like you have to glance everywhere all the time. Don't look at the ground, or the sky, or around. Look at your opponent. Watch their shoulders, their paws, their tail. Those are what tell you what's coming next. " he spoke, voice soft. " A good warrior uses their head before their claws. "

After all was said and done, he stepped back and lowered himself into a crouch, slow and deliberate. His large frame shifted smoothly, muscles coiled but controlled. " Now... Kit, show me if you were listening. Fix your paws, watch me. And when you're ready, come at me. " he meowed before grinning warmly. " Don't worry, I'll go easy on ya. "

From a distance, sharp green eyes watched as Copperstorm led Fawnkit in what was less a proper spar and more of a lesson in the basics of what would constitute a fight. Thornkit couldn't say he liked Fawnkit, and he hardly knew Copperstorm; in any other instance, he would have looked away and gone about his business, but the prospect of seeing for himself how these ThunderClanners fought was one that kept him rooted to the place he'd stopped. Copperstorm, from what he'd observed, was no Juniperstar, but the warrior held some rank in the Clan, and that counted for something - in that moment, it counted for him having experience that was worth paying attention to.

Not a moon ago, Thornkit wouldn't have even entertained the consideration of one day fighting for ThunderClan. Why would he have, when he'd thought that his stay - and his littermates' - would be an impermanent one? Yet as the days passed and he came to terms with the notion that he'd be there for the foreseeable future, Thornkit had rationalized that it was less him fighting for ThunderClan, and more that he'd be fighting for the place that Faithkit and Falsekit remained in. Any of his so-called Clanmates were less when compared to his littermates, and wouldn't be afforded the same protection he'd offer his siblings, but they could still reap the benefits of their continued stay amongst the Clan's ranks.

In order to assure his siblings' protection by his paws though, Thornkit had acknowledged that he'd first need to learn the ropes - watching Copperstorm might not have been the training he'd eventually earn as an apprentice, but it was a start. So Thornkit watched.
