Leaf-fall was finally upon them. Crisp air greeted Quailstep as she stepped outside the den, her limbs stretching and muscles readying themselves for the day. Yesterday, she'd been named Mallowpaw's new mentor. The apprentice had no doubt learned something from the previous warrior in charge of their tutelage, but Quailstep knew that a gap in learning could be detrimental.
So today, her goal was to see where Mallowpaw was at. No use in teaching him how to stalk if he'd already mastered the skill.
She poked her head into the apprentice's den, clearing her throat gently.
"Mallowpaw? Time for training," she called softly.
Mallowpaw's eyes sparkled with wonder. Training? Already? It felt like a dream come true. He wondered what it would consist of? Maybe he could show Quailstep just how awesome he already was and their awe would be enough to make him a warrior already. He rose to his feet, his fur a disaster from a night of tossing and turning. Dreams of running through flowering fields filling his mind with a dreamlike haze he wished he could always have. He had a mentor before, but they had decided the life of a warrior was not for them, heading off to the twoleg place.
He rushed to the door, taking in the scent of his new mentor, excitement sparkling in his eyes. "I haven't trained in for-ev-er!" They called excitedly, "My old mentor left! We never finished all the training they promised! I'm going to show you all the cool stuff I learned! And you're going to be sooooo impressed!" He kept excitedly exclaiming things, his voice loud enough that some of the other apprentices were starting to stir. "Where are we training anyways? What are we training?!" He moved closer to Quail, pushing his face closer to hers. They seemed blissfully unaware of personal space, and far too excited. Hopefully Quailstep was aware that she had quite the day ahead of her.

Quailstep's eyes widened, unable to hide her surprise at the apprentice moved so directly into her personal space. It wasn't really... uncomfortable, but it was unexpected. His energy was infectious though, and while she wouldn't quite match the level of stream-of-consciousness chattering, she was certainly feeling energized for their training.
"Well, I don't want to start you on anything you already have mastered," she mewed, leading him out of the camp. "We'll start with a sort of assessment - I'd like for you to catch one piece of prey, any type of prey, in order to show me how you stalk and hunt." They exited the camp, looking deeper into the pine forest.
"Begin. I'll be following, but pretend I'm not here."
He nodded enthusiastically as he excitedly hopped out of camp, he was so ready to show his new mentor how fantastic he was at hunting! He had practiced so much with his older mentor he had to be a pro now, right? The two stepped outside of camp, with a quick glance behind them to make sure Quailstep was still following. He sniffed the air, mouth open as it tasted for the scent of prey. His eyes spotted it, a large lark pecking carelessly at the ground. They giggled to themselves, haunches raised as they carefully snuck towards it. However, in their excitement, they made a bit too much noise during their leap and the bird flew into the air.
Mallowpaw landed in a pathetic heap in the dirt, frowning. He stood slowly, licking his pelt clean in embarrassment. It glanced behind itself, at their new mentor and forced a smile. "Wow! That bird sure was fast, huh?" He chuckled, looking into the air, hoping to spot something. He saw a feather left from the fleeing bird, scooping it up in their jaws. "How is this?" He asked, a bit too proudly.
APPRENTICE OF SKYCLAN he / they / it, amab (demi-boy) 10 moons old, ages on the 19th. unknown npc x honeysucklepool, littermate to dandelionpaw mentored by quailstep, mentor to no one
Quailstep dropped behind her apprentice, watching his stance as he stalked the bird. His form was quite good, actually, so there wasn't much need to correct there. The apprentice giggled, and Quailstep's tail tip twitched in irritation. Well, that wouldn't do.
When they lept for the catch, their paws scrabbled against the dirt and twigs, sending detritus flying as well as the bird. Ah. They could chalk it up to mere overexcitement, but it seemed Mallowpaw was in need of some help with focus. Calming, perhaps. His enthusiasm was that of a kit, not an apprentice a few moons into his apprenticeship.
"Very fast," she mewed. It wouldn't do to start their training with scolding - after all, this was mostly just trying to understand where his skills were. "And while that's a lovely feather, I do want to see you catch something we can actually eat." The dry comment is finished with a light-hearted chuckle, reassuring her apprentice that she isn't upset with him.
