Pine is standing at the edge of the river that runs around their new camp, angled so his face does not reflect in the water, claws out and ready to hook into the flesh of a fish. He can feel Torrentpaw's eyes on him like he was standing on his back, not just looking at it. Pine had, quite foolishly in retrospect, agreed to teach him how to fish in a river. He sighs, and then spots it– a fat red salmon, ready for picking. Carefully he sticks a paw out, tapping the surface of the water to imitate an insect. The fish falls for it, gets closer, and closer– Pine strikes, paw shooting into the water, claws sinking into the flesh, and he scoops the salmon out of the water, into the air, and onto the shore in one fluid motion. He's quick to deliver a deadly bite to its head.

He looks up at Torrentpaw. "Did you get all that?" He asks. Probably not, he thinks. "Why do you think I was tapping the water?"

‎ ‎ ‎ ‎ ‎ ‎ ‎ Torrentpaw had perched himself as close as he could to Pine, his eyes darting to and from the water in anticipation as he waited for a fish to swim by.

Tensing as he spotted movement beneath the surface, Torrentpaw's head swung towards Pine--just to make sure he saw it too--before looking back towards the water, his tail flicking with excitement as he bit at the side of his lip.

Though his excitement quickly turned to confusion as Pine's paw reached towards the surface of the water, disrupting it into ripples. Alarmed, Torrentpaw quickly searched the older cat's gaze for an answer to his antics. From his experience, causing a commotion in the water made a fish disappear within a blink of an eye. But to his surprise, the fish's scales flashed as it turned towards where Pine's paw had met the water.

Torrentpaw's jaws parted in amazement as Pine struck the fish from beneath the water with a splash, and he quickly leaped to his paws as it's body hit the floor. Shaking the few drops of water from his whiskers, Torrentpaw fell into a crouch near the fish, his eyes shining with delight as his tail swayed above his back.

"Wow!" Torrentpaw swiftly prodded the fish with a paw, as if to test if it was actually dead. "It came right to you!" He exclaimed, before lifting himself into a sitting position, slumping hastily onto his haunches. He thought for a moment at Pine's question, his face screwing up slightly as he tried to fathom why he would even attempt to disturb the water, and even more so why it worked.

"I'm not sure," He began after a moment, flicking an ear as he gazed back towards the water. "But I did notice our shadows didn't fall across the stream..." Torrentpaw added, trailing off as he threw himself back into a crouched position along the edge of the bank, tensing as he accidentally sent a small shower of dirt and rock into the water. Shaking it off, his eyes scanned the stream.

"Can I try now?" Torrentpaw asked, in a hushed but excited tone. He didn't know if the fish could hear him when he was this close, but he wasn't going to risk it.

Torrent… Torrentpaw's excitement is almost infectious enough to make him crack a smile. The young cat is so easily impressed. He stares at the fish like he's never seen one before. Well… maybe he hasn't. It wasn't a sea fish– it was a river fish. Still. Torrentpaw tries to answer his question, but he looks confused, attempting to cover his lack of knowledge with another observation– unnecessary. Pine knows he can fish in the sea, with at least some degree of efficiency. Otherwise he'd be dead, and Pine wouldn't be teaching him anything. Torrentpaw moves on quickly, turning away from the fish and towards the stream, voice hushed but excited.

"Slow down kid," Pine meows, amused. "How are you planning on doing that? Knowing how to do something isn't enough, you have to understand it. Otherwise you don't know how to adapt it," he says, coming closer to the edge again. He stares into the water. "Sea fish eat mostly stuff that's underwater– seaweed, kelp, smaller fish. Their predators are birds, so they stay away from the surface if they think someone's there. But many fish that live in rivers and lakes eat insects. The insects will hover over the surface, disrupting the water… some of them can even land on it. But not all fish are the same. If you try it with the wrong kind, you'll just scare it away. Smaller fish usually don't eat insects, they stick to plants and underwater stuff. With big ones like the one I caught, though, you can try it," he looks at Torrentpaw again, wondering if he'd heard even a single thing he'd said. Sometimes it was hard to tell. "Alright. Now we wait for another fish to come our way."

‎ ‎ ‎ ‎ ‎ ‎ ‎ Torrentpaw hesitantly tore his gaze from the water as Pine reached his side, trying his best to 'slow down' as Pine had seemed to have to remind him every other sentence. He couldn't help but gaze to and from the water's surface as Pine explained, his eyes begging for another fish to swim by so he too could tap the water--it was practically like magic. Though the mention of bugs was intriguing to Torrentpaw, his ears perking as he looked back at Pine, curiosity filling his gaze.

"So the fish thought you were a bug." Torrentpaw meowed, understanding lacing his tone. He always assumed that speed would be the main component of catching a fish, seeing as how quick they were themselves. Pine was fast, but his cleverness is what landed him such a great catch.

Eyes bright, Torrentpaw gazed back into the stream, lowering his body further as to ready himself. Please let it be a big one! He hoped, lifting one of his forepaws slightly off the ground, as if his life depended on tapping the water.

After what seemed like a decade had gone by, Torrentpaw tensed as he spotted a flash movement beneath the surface. As it grew closer, it was no doubt another fish. Torrentpaw quickly tugged at Pine's foreleg a few times with a paw to get his attention, not daring to speak or take his eyes off the creature as it neared them. Excitement fizzed through Torrentpaw from ears to tail tip as the size of the fish grew more apparent. It wasn't as big as Pine's salmon, but it sure looks like a bug-eater. He meowed to himself, before steadying his paws on the bank. Carefully, Torrentpaw reached a large paw above the water, tapping it delicately on the surface, before quickly drawing his paw back to the ground as the fish turned his direction in an instant.

The fish was murky colored, similar to the stream, and had long whiskers like a cat. Torrentpaw's own whiskers twitched in amusement at the appearance of the creature, but it only lasted a second as the fish's mouth breached the surface of where his paw made contact with the water.

Leaning forward, Torrentpaw lashed out fiercely towards the catfish, unaware that it was already too late. He was practically face-to-face with the fish itself, and as his claws grazed it's slippery body, it had already begun to thrash in attempts to escape. Without thinking, Torrentpaw lashed out another paw in order to save his catch, hooking it's gills. Torrentpaw let out an exhilarated mew of triumph, but it was cut short, as his imbalance against the bank caused his hind paws to slip, his weight making bits of rock and soil crumble along with him. Stomach twisting in alarm, Torrentpaw plunged messily into the stream with a splash, his forepaw still hooked into the body of the catfish.

Shock pulsed through him as he fought to hold onto the fish and regain his footing against the floor of the icy stream, water splashing into his face as the fish shook in his grasp. In a last ditch effort, Torrentpaw grasped the catfish with his teeth, tearing it from his claws as it continued to writhe vigorously in his jaws. Struggling to keep his head still and his grip steady, Torrentpaw's gaze searched for Pine as the fish seemed to have more control over him than he did.

Pine watches as Torrentpaw goes back to the stream, scowling slightly as he tugs at his foreleg– he wants to hiss at him to stop being an idiot, but doesn't want to scare away the fish either. Of course he'd seen the fish– it was big too, even for a kit the size of Torrentpaw. Ah, well. Better to learn the quick and hard way.

He watches as Torrentpaw strikes, too late, claws not digging deep enough– he thrashes in attempt to save his catch, but missteps, and tumbles into the river after it– he just has enough air to meow in triumph before his battle with the catfish continued, a battle which he is losing quickly. Pine lets out a mreow of laughter, shaking his head in part exasperation, part fondness.

Ah. He should probably help now, before Torrentpaw loses his strength. "Still need rescuing, do you,?" Pine says, amused. "Hold on to that fish! Don't let it go!" He calls, as he wades into the water, large strong paws finding a better foothold than the young toms. That, and, well– he's not holding a thrashing fish. He comes up to Torrentpaw and sinks his teeth into the scruff of his neck, half carrying, half hauling him back onto dry land. "Should probably kill that thing before it tries to take you down with it." He says gruffly. With a slight hint of hesitation, he adds, "you alright kid?"

‎ ‎ ‎ ‎ ‎ ‎ ‎ "I'm not letting go!" Torrentpaw assured him, hardly noticing the pinch of Pine's sharp teeth as they sunk into his scruff. Torrentpaw's head jerked around along with the fish as it shook, but Pine carrying him allowed him to lift up his claws and sink them into it's body, seizing it's wild movements.

When he felt his body breach the water, Torrentpaw tore free from Pine's grasp, releasing the fish from his sore jaws and placing both paws onto it's body in a pounce-like motion. At Pine's instruction, Torrentpaw gave it a quick bite to the head as he had seen the larger tom demonstrate earlier, his eyes gleaming in triumph as the fish's body went limp.

"Ha! I did it!" Torrentpaw exclaimed, lifting his head to stare down at his catch. I caught prey for my clanmates!

He nodded at Pine's question, taking a few excited paces around the fish as he examined it--it was huge!

"I knew it was too late as soon as I swiped." Torrentpaw admitted, finally lifting his bright gaze towards Pine and slowing to a halt. "But I just couldn't let it go, I didn't want to waste my chance." He added, his tone growing more earnest. He didn't like that Pine had to haul him from the stream due to his blunder, but at least the fish had been caught.

"I won't miss next time." Torrentpaw promised, before resuming his crouched position on the river's edge.
