YEWKIT

Find me in the backyard, in the dark

.

Yewkit hoped she was not in trouble - Meadowpaw, the medicine cat, had asked to meet her at the herb garden the healers had been cultivating in camp. It was easy enough to find, the scent of herbs strong, the green plants an unusual sight in WindClan. Yewkit remembered her lesson from the medicine cats, sorting out useful from already withered herbs. But all of these herbs were still rooted, healthy and thriving.

She approached one and softly let the scented air enter her mouth - these were certainly unusual scents alright. Just then a clanmate brushed by and Yewkit startled sat back down. Was she even allowed to approach the plants? What if she had done something to them to render them useless? Yewkit hoped the medicine cat would not be upset with her, but if she had ruined the herb, a punishment would be in place, justifiably so.

While Yewkit waited, she dared not move anymore, in fear of hurting the precious plants. She eyed them, but did not move any closer, only watched from afar at the greens, waiting for Meadowpaw to arrive.

MEADOWPAW
x

Since she became an apprentice, Meadowpaw made a routine. Every day she woke up, checked on the injured if they had any, and cared for the garden. That ritual was what pushed her through the day, rain or shine, and what allowed them to raise so many beautiful flowers and herbs.

Meadowpaw usually spent that time alone, but today she asked Yewkit to meet her. Her tender green eyes drifted from the beckoning leaves of the plants fluttering in the breeze to Yewkit.

"Good morning Yewkit." The greeting is slurred, framed behind a languid smile. "Thank you for coming out, I hope its not too early for you." Though between the two of them, Meadowpaw was sure she looked more out of it. "I asked you to come here today because I really needed help with the garden. You were so good with the herbs that I immediately thought of you." Truthfully, she wanted to check on the kit. See how she was doing with that problem she asked about, and also to share a little with her about the flowers, since she always seemed so curious.

Meadowpaw values kindness and remembrance. As a kit, she internalized her mother's lessons, but questioned whether her way is the only way. She has broken free from the heavy burden of her mother's expectations due to their estrangement after the fire. She remains kind and soft-spoken through all she's endured, but is not afraid to speak out for what she believes is right.

Meadow works tirelessly at any task she undertakes, desperate to prove herself capable and worthy despite her disability. Without her mother's guidance, she finds new ways to express herself.

In conversations, she is gentle, thoughtful, and withdrawn, often hiding her struggles, fearing others seeing her as incapable. She continues to have a strong bond not only with her sister, but with her adopted family as well. Meadow uses her new freedom to support and deepen the bonds with her clanmates. Additionally, she has started to explore the more spiritual side of herself…

Her worldview is a complicated mix of hope and frustration. She wants to believe that there's hope at the end of all the suffering, but feels trapped by her limitations. With enough time and support, she may find a way to overcome her limitations and accept herself.

Yewkit sat there for a while, watching the wind play with the herbs, not daring to move closer towards them in fear of destroying something with her recklessness. Only at the sound of Meadowpaw's voice did she raise her gaze towards the other, searching for something to tell her what's going on.

It was only the medicine cat's words that revealed her intentions to the small kitten. Good with the herbs? Yewkit wasn't sure what the healer meant, she only did what she had been told and not even correctly, but she wasn't going to doubt her, definitely not out loud. The older cat certainly knew better than her, who was too young to know anything.

"Okay.." she replied, voice small as always. "What do you need me to do?"

After their encounter, Yewkit didn't think the medicine cat would seek her out - why should she, when Yewkit asked foolish questions and said even more foolish things? She expected the medicine cat to see her out of the den and not think about her again after that, so to be invited out and to help certainly surprised her.
