You walk along the edge of danger
AND IT WILL CHANGE YOU

.

Copperstorm knew he was being overprotective, he could feel the tension in his shoulders every time pawsteps neared the nursery entrance. Instinct screamed at him to bar the way, to wedge himself between Dewshine and even the most harmless clanmate. She was fine. She was strong. Their kits were coming any day and every passing moment twisted his nerves tighter. What if something went wrong? What if leafbare stole from them too soon? What if Rowanfeather-- No. He couldn't spiral like that. He refused to invite fear in.

With a bracing breath, he forced his hackles flat and turned his focus outward, to the clan that had sheltered them, trusted them. Would ThunderClan begin to side-eye them for what ShadowClan accused? He prayed not. He had told the truth: Coalstrike's death had been a tragedy created by Coalstrike himself. Yet he couldn't deny the bitter twist in his chest whenever he imagined how others might now judge ThunderClan because of him. This forest had given him everything: purpose, a future, a family. Children he hadn't sired by blood but loved no less. Soon, kits of his own. He wouldn't let his past smear that.

Spotting Loonstar, he cast one final look toward the nursery before stepping forward, lowering his head with utmost respect. " Loonstar. " he greeted, voice low and steady. " I never managed to say this before... " The words stuck, heavy as stones. Apologies were not something he'd grown up offering, certainly not for surviving a monster like his father. Apologies were for the weak, he had been taught time and time again... It had been beaten in him. But... But she had stood firm under accusation meant for him.

" ... I am sorry for how ShadowClan has twisted ThunderClan's name on account of Coalstrike. " His jaw tightened but his gaze held hers. " I didn't know they valued that brute as anything but a terror. But whatever they think... ThunderClan shouldn't bear blame for the war he waged on his own family. " He exhaled, the tension loosening, if only a fraction.

" Thank you for believing us. For protecting my family. "

"and this time, she won't be forgiving"
his unspoken fears find a seat in her experiences. the excitement of a family expanding, the swell of the coming cold, and the bitter loss that followed. she can't help but let her eyes linger on that den, shivering under the nervousness that still washes through fiery veins. frightened still, even under all the anger that tries to drown it out.

maybe he could feel it... the intensity of her anxious stare. he comes closer, departing from his role as an anxious father long enough to bow down. long enough to apologize. her brows furrow, uncertain this belongs to her... but still he offers it. "Copperstorm... you don't need to worry about that," the chocolate tabby responds, ear flicking as if dismissing the annoying buzz that was Sablestar's nagging presence. "I've made my position clear... to Sablestar... he won't be pressing the matter any further." if he knows what's good for him. if he wants to entertain that there is still love left between them.

at the final comment, her face lightens slightly, finding the faintest twitch of a smile. "If for no other reason, because it's my job as your leader... but also... because I know you'd do the same for anyone else here." the whole benefit of the clan... why Thornstar had even moved to found it.

Juni-- Loonstar had been a mother around this time of year. She had watched over her kits, nursed them through the bitter cold, and yet she had also known loss, too soon, too quickly.. Before one of her little ones could even join ThunderClan. Littlekit... Just a tiny thing. Would the same happen to one of his own? Dewshine was so close to kitting now... Copperstorm's chest tightened at the thought. He couldn't stop imagining the moment the first tiny cry reached him, the weight of responsibility settling like stones in his stomach. The joy was undeniable, but the fear that came with it clawed just as sharply. Atleast Coalstrike was no longer around... One shadow less... But...

Would Leveretkit be okay? Would Saltpaw and Icepaw understand what this meant? Would Boarthorn feel loved and secure? Would Pineconekit, so small and fragile, feel lost again? The questions spiraled through his mind, each one heavier than the last. He could feel the same helplessness he'd felt as a kit, the way the world could turn cruel in a single heartbeat, but this time, he had someone to protect. Someone to fight for.

When Loonstar mentioned having made herself clear to Sablestar, Copperstorm shot her a fleeting look before flicking his ears back. " I hope... I haven't caused you any trouble with your... Former mate. " he murmured, frowning slightly. He wanted to apologize for the burden Serpentberry's death had placed on her, for the grief she had endured, but words felt insufficient. Perhaps his presence alone, steadfast and unwavering, could show her how much he understood. " ... I would. " he finally admitted, voice low and quiet. " When the young ones were attacked by that hawk... This clan... This place... It matters to me. All of you do. " His golden gaze lingered on Loonstar, reflecting a mixture of gratitude, awe, and worry. " You birthed kits during the chill... How did you not lose your mind with worry? "

He swallowed, muscles tensing slightly as he thought of Dewshine. Soon it would be his turn. He could almost feel the weight of her body, the warmth of the kits growing inside her, the tiny lives that depended entirely on them. His tail twitched nervously. What if something went wrong? What if he failed to protect them? The thought made his chest ache. And yet, beneath all that fear, there was a spark of certainty, fierce and stubborn as ever. He would not fail. He could not. Dewshine, his mate, his kits, he would fight for them, shield them, and guard their lives with everything he had. Whatever storms came, whatever dangers prowled the borders of ThunderClan or the world beyond... He would meet them head-on. Because they were his family, and he would not let them go.
