Talonpaw was still shaken, to say the least. Even waking up to the dim light of the rising sun- his singular gaze looked exhausted. His body dragged, but his belly did not rumble. It instead churned- mixed, spun. His blue eye stayed locked on one spot, and his paws stretched over each other- neatly crossing at the ankles- waiting.

He did not know what Dustystar wanted to speak to him about- but the idea that she had said it with such bluntness- he knew his fate was set in stone. 'tomorrow' rung in his ears, and besides the feeling of being sick- he still tasted the thick ichor of blood. Perhaps it was that that sated him from feeling hungry. He wasn't sure.

Dimmingsun and Meadowpaw could only spare one herb for him, and he wouldn't have asked for more. He wouldn't say it again- Meadowpaw already chewed him out- but Talon was stuck believing what he believed. Meadowpaw did have a fair point- but it also hurt Talon to try to think about him not being strong enough. It was a constant, aching feeling- a gnawing feeling that threatened to eat him alive. He had to stay strong.

He had to.

Cats pulled in, they listened, they watched- and Dustystar stepped forward, closing the distance. He recognized each- his mentor, windclans leader, windclans deputy. He shifted uncomfortably, leaning on his side closest to the exit. Not that he wouldn't have to barrel through them- he still would've had to. But Talon looked for his exits if he had to regardless.

He couldn't be left to die here.

He refused.

He felt the eyes, and he believed this was the end of his time in Windclan. As soon as he was better, they'd kick him out. They'd chase him away. For a moment- he imagined small paws again, claws digging into the grass- pulling himself faster against the terrain. Tumbling, getting up and running. He has spent his entire life running, how could he expect to not want to in this moment...

"what happened?... who attacked you....? What border was it on?"

Dustystar spoke- and Talonpaws ears rung, the voice muffled by his own pounding heartbeat as he slowly shifted to his paws. His head lowered, and tattered ears pressed against his helm. His body reshifted... And through his torn lip, his tongue rolled in his mouth. Slowly, he blinked. Slowly, he processed. Slowly, he began speaking his story.

"I was huntin'. Testin' my ability- my eye in the dark. With one eye- things are different. Harder, Dimmin' an' merry doin' their best, but since the flood... I can't stop movin'. There's too much to do." He explains, awkwardly. How could he explain he needed his time alone- that it made him... Safer to be around? He didn't want to risk his hide. Plagues words rung in his mind, and his blue gaze shot to the side- the exit- before back at Dustystar. Studying her expression.

"I wound up at the Shadowclan border. I didn't go near enough- I thought I saw something bright from the big beast that walks that back beaten up path. It's stench is enough to keep me away. But, as I walked along the border, a squirrel crossed. The first prey I seen. It practically ran into my paws, and I had it dead within seconds. I would've been home by midnight. That feelin' when somethin's watching y'? I felt it. I looked back- and then I was being attacked." His claws flexed in his nest. Blue eyes flashed dangerously, ever so quick, before pulling back to the exhausted state it appeared before.

Perhaps listening to the elders when he groomed them free of ticks made him a good story teller. He wasn't sure, but he continued. "The attacker was jus' a kid. I didn't want t' fight I told them. I was content comin' home with the squirrel so the kits could eat in the mornin'. An' kid went on- it felt like they knew me. But I didn't know them. And when he attacked again- well.. I defended myself 'cause what was i s'pose t' do?" It was a genuine question; one he didn't know how to answer. How can you defend yourself when you are being viciously attacked? The kid had torn his lip first- and it's when his blood boiled, and he lost control and fought back. He wasn't going to tell them that he almost lost control entirely. He wasn't going to tell them he almost killed this kid.

"The squirrel tore in half, at some point- and I left the tail there. The kid ran off with the squirrel when... I let them. It.. wasn't worth it t' me anymore. An' I'm sorry-" he began nervously glancing towards the exit again, before taking a shaky breath and looking again at Dustystar. "The prey wasn't worth it anymore." He stated clearly- but it was obvious something was deeper that he wouldn't want to say. He spoke with truth, he spoke with a sort of confidence- but it was more of that fact that he knew what he was talking about. But the words still lingered-

The prey wasn't worth killing a kid.

✪ Align my Heart, my Body, my Mind

indentDustystar can only be held back from her interrogation for so long. As soon as Talonpaw is stable, she's pushing her way into the medicine den. The leader tries to be swift and concise in her questioning, but even she can tell she's stumbling over her words.

indentGrey brows furrow deeper the more Talonpaw speaks. "All this, over a squirrel..." Dustystar mutters, shaking her head. "You said you were by Shadowclan's border, right? That apprentice attacked you, then, was from Shadowclan?" The question makes her mouth feel dry. Shadowclan were meant to be their allies, a bond bound in Dustystar's own blood. "I've heard they've been having prey shortages, but this is... excessive." 'Excessive' is an understatement. Dustystar isn't even sure if Talonpaw's lip will grow back after this.

indent"You did disobey the rules by leaving camp alone, without your mentor." Green eyes shoot Talonpaw a pointed look "But I think you've more than learned your lesson, haven't you, Talonpaw." Surely he knows now, the consequences of disobeying the rules put in place to keep him safe.

indent"As for the squirrel - you made the right choice to retreat. Your life, the life of any cat, is far more important than any piece of prey." It's something the rest of the forest cats were due to learn.

Dustystar - 27 moons - Windclan Leader

Talonpaw was uneasy. It was clear in every single movement he made. The adults around felt surrounded him- and even as he had grown throughout these moons, the scowled look that drew over Dustystars face only increased his... fear. He did not realize that Dustystar was pondering other things. When she finally spoke, and asked more questions- he focused to carefully dissect them. "Aye- I can only assume." And he wondered how he pissed someone else off to the extreme that he managed too. It wasn't intentional on his behalf. "Merrystalk... Was that kid familiar from... the frogs? Was that by Shadowclan?" Talon suddenly asked, blue gaze darting to his mentor. Examining for clues on this kid and why they screamed that Talon thought he was better than them. (And why was that such a common thought amongst kids?)

But then Dustystar spoke again and Talonpaw blinked. Once. Twice. "Disobey?" It drawled from his lips like a question. Yewkit had just been speaking about not wanting to disobey him. But he didn't even know what that means. "Rule- since when?" He had never heard of this rule, and he had been leaving on his own since he was free from the med den. No one had informed him. It was more of a mutter as Dustystar spoke, tattered ears folding back against his helm. His blue eye glanced yet again to Merrystalk, but it was of confusion.

He heard her when she spoke of his life being more valuable then prey- of any life being more valuable- but he was stuck. "Dustystar." He said, blue eye aimed directly to hers. There was a frustration welling in his chest, but he tried to remember Meadowpaws words. His blue eye left green to look at hers- even questioning why no one had said anything to him. To Dimmingsun, for when they found him angry and alone. So many opportunities- and no one told him.

"I have never heard of this rule. I have walked these moors, hunted these moors, slowly gaining my footing on familiarizing myself. I have brought back prey, I have kept busy t' repay my debts- but no rule has been spoken t' me that I could not leave without a mentor. I move alone better- I do not fret I will be attacked when my back is turned until now- and I realize that is along borders. I walk alone- because it is what I am used to."

And suddenly- he realized something. What rules did they have that he did not know because he did not grow here? What rules was he not told because he was here temporarily? They must have meant it when he could stay till leafbare was over and his blue eye saddened for a moment, before eyebrows furrowing back down. His shoulders rolled behind him.

"What other rules consist of Windclan that I have not known about?" He asked towards Merrystalk- to Meadowpaw- to Dimmingsun. How many rules did he break trying to thank the clan. Did he feel regret for leaving? No. It was not easy, but what he did feel indifferent was that how he felt suddenly like he didn't belong. Why could some leave on their own, and he couldn't? What was the reason for him being unable to leave alone? But he would not ask that. He was upset, his own care he'd provided himself to prevent from cracking at the edges, to be able to handle the dramatic change.... It couldn't happen without a warrior???
