"Psst! Hey- wake up!" Sharkpaw whispered, leaning over to give the other apprentices ear a tug.

It was probably around midnight, and all the kits and apprentices and even some of the warriors were down for the night. Not Sharkpaw, though. Sleep didn't always come easily for the young tom– sometimes his thoughts were too loud, sometimes his dreams just weren't on his side. Other nights, he slept like the dead. Those were on the days the aqua-eyed menace was able to work himself into a proper exhaustion though, and today just hadn't been one of those days. It'd been slow going and full of chores, and every time he'd started to have some real fun some other cat came over to tell him he was being a nuisance.

What did they know? It wasn't his fault they were boring, lame adults or that he was never chosen for patrols out into the territory. Maybe he wasn't the best listener, but that was usually because the older cats were talking nonsense or being way too overprotective. And sure, that might have been fine for other young cats– but Sharkpaw? He'd been on his own for ages now looking out for himself, and he wasn't easily going to bend to the will of a cat he didn't known or respect.

Which is why he wasn't about to ask for permission in leaving the camp in the middle of the night. He already knew the adults would make a fuss and he wasn't in the mood to listen to them nag.

He also wasn't in the mood to go wandering on his own, though. He'd only be left to his thoughts then, and that was problem enough for Sharkpaw. So, it was time to harass one of the two apprentices he knew he might be able to drag along with him-- the one that wouldn't jump at every shadow they came across. Though, come to think of it, Shark didn't completely hate the idea of playing 'brave protector' for someone.

Maybe he would drag Rosepaw out next time...

‎ ‎ ‎ ‎ ‎ ‎ ‎ With a groan Torrentpaw lifted his head, slowly blinking open his eyes as he tried to make out what had woke him up. With a final blink his eyes brightened with wakefulness as he stared back at Sharkpaw, surprise falling over his features.

Pulling his ear away from the tom's grasp he looked around for any immediate danger, then down at Squidpaw who he was sleeping next to, then back towards Sharkpaw. Nothing seemed to be awry, so why was Sharkpaw tugging on his ear in the middle of the night?

"Are you alright?" He whispered, careful not to stir and wake Squidpaw--though he was still concerned for the tom before him. "Did something happen?"

He knew Sharkpaw to be prickly and quick to anger--he definitely didn't think the grey tomcat would choose to talk to him just because. Though part of Torrentpaw felt honored, as he had been trying to grow closer to the other apprentice since they had arrived in their new camp.

He scowled at the sleepy concern that appeared on his clanmates face, glancing away because looking at the sort of thing was a surefire way to piss him off and he didn't feel like being mad at Torrentpaw right now. He was trying to have fun, not argue or be fussed over. "Tch. No, don't be dumb." he huffed, trying to be as quiet as possible. He didn't want Squidpaw or anyone else waking up and getting in the way.

"I can't sleep, so I'm going for a walk down by the river." he explained, impatient at having to explain himself but also not wanting Torrentpaw to go running to a warrior. Shark had more than enough experience in dealing with sleepless nights like this-- even if he'd probabaly be extra grumpy in the morning from lack of shut-eye. "You should come." he added, turning to head for the entrance of the den and pausing long enough to glance back with an almost devilish smirk. "Unless your scared of the dark." he challenged playfully before disappearing out into the camp beyond.

‎ ‎ ‎ ‎ ‎ ‎ ‎ Torrentpaw blinked at his clanmate's sharp reply, growing fully awake as his curiosity grew. Despite Sharkpaw's icy tone, Torrentpaw never really took offense to it. He understood the move to their new camp was stressful for everybody, and it may be harder for some cats to adjust to than others.

Torrentpaw flicked an ear as Sharkpaw explained why he was awake at such an hour, but it still didn't explain why he was waking him up. Does he want me to come too? Torrentpaw wondered to himself, hope flickering in his chest. Of course he would say yes--but only if Sharkpaw wanted him to. Anticipation fizzed in his paws, all tiredness leaving his body as he grew eager at the idea of exploring.

Torrentpaw leaned forward as Sharkpaw headed towards the exit, holding his breath as the tom looked over his shoulder to face him.

"You should come. Unless you're afraid of the dark."

Happiness washed over the tom, followed by a flash of mischief in his eyes as Sharkpaw darted out of the den. Torrentpaw stood up, and as hastily as possible without stepping on his adopted littermate, he bounced out of the den after Sharkpaw.

Pausing to glance around as he ducked out of the den, Torrentpaw bounded after the rascally tom, skidding to a halt as he reached the other's side. "Lead the way!" Torrentpaw meowed, his voice hushed but full of excitement as he butted Sharkpaw's shoulder with his own.

Sharkpaw slipped out of the den without looking back. Torrentpaw would either follow or her wouldn't, and regardless of how the latter option might leave him feeling, the grey and white tom had no intention of begging them to come along. He'd sooner go wandering off on his own into the darkness than extend the invitation a second time– but luckily, it didn't seem to come to that.

Barely a moment later did the sound of quiet pawsteps come shuffling after him, and he had to fight to keep the triumphant smirk off his face as the spotted cat ducked out of the den and slipped over to join him with an excited whisper.

He didn't bother to stifle the mischievous grin that settled on his muzzle as he playfully pounced at the other tom to try and start a brief play scuffle before suddenly tearing off toward the streams that separated the camp from the rest of the territory, eager to leave the dens and those sleeping within behind.

"Come on! I want to check out that border with the big rocks you guys found the other day!" he called once they were far enough away from the boundary of their camp to be out of earshot.

And sure enough that was the direction the aqua eyed apprentice was leading them in, but the pace was far from streamlined. He made sure to jump at and tumble around with Torrentpaw plenty along the way, almost seeming more interested in that then actually reaching their destination.

‎ ‎ ‎ ‎ ‎ ‎ ‎ He giggled at Sharkpaw's sudden outburst of energy, before quickly slapping a paw over his maw to muffle his loudness. Rearing up onto his haunches to bat in mid air at the other apprentice, Torrentpaw bounded after him as he started towards the camp exit.

Bursting out into the forest, Torrentpaw bumped into Sharkpaw playfully as they ventured through the trees and undergrowth, bubbling with laughter as he raced with the other apprentice. Joy seemed to course through his bones as he ran alongside Sharkpaw--the grey tom hadn't even wanted to leave the shipyard a moon ago.

I wonder if he's happy that he came. Torrentpaw mused, watching the other apprentice with bright eyes.

Hastily slowing to a halt as they reached the river, Torrentpaw gazed across the water at the stretch of flat stones. "You know," Torrentpaw began, shooting Sharkpaw a sideways glance. "Thunderclan made it pretty clear that they didn't want us on their territory... Just in case you had any ideas." He meowed, amusement flashing in his gaze as he lightly shoved his new friend with a paw.

It was easy to ignore the fact that he was having a rough night when he could just replace the bad feelings with better ones– when he could just brute force the thoughts from him mind. And Torrentpaw made it easy. He wasn't sure what it was about the other tomcat that made them so happy about everything all the time, but Sharkpaw was more than happy to take advantage of their infectious good mood.

It wasn't long before the river came into view, and large white paws carried the youth to the waters edge as he eyed the large, flat rocks sitting on the other side.

"You know, Thunderclan made it pretty clear that they didn't want us on their territory... Just in case you had any ideas."

"Tch." He rolled his eyes, reaching over to shove the other back. "Fun-sucker. Ya scared?" he taunted with a cocked brow. 'I'll chase em off if they come sniffin' around." he offered in that bull-headed arrogance of his, completely genuine despite his delusion in thinking he had a chance in running of a thunderclan patrol should one show up.

‎ ‎ ‎ ‎ ‎ ‎ ‎ He swayed a little at Sharkpaw's lighthearted shove, though his gaze stayed locked on the tom, as if trying to decipher how serious he actually was.

Is he trying to prove something? Torrentpaw wondered, a tint of concern in his eyes. He thought back to the Thunderclan warriors, and how eager they looked to leap in to battle if Juniperstar had so commanded. If Sharkpaw truly were to swim across, and place his paws upon the stones, his scent would without a doubt be caught the next morning. Which would surely lead to conflict, with his friend right in the middle of it. He couldn't have that.

"You're brave, anycat could see that." Torrentpaw began, giving Sharkpaw a nod of sincerity and approval. "Riverclan is going to need cats like you to keep us strong--so save that strength for if a real threat were to show itself." His intentions weren't to give his friend orders, but he hoped his words found the other apprentice well. The last thing Riverclan needed was conflict with their new neighbors, especially while still trying to settle in.

Sharkpaw seemed to consider the other for a moment, aqua eyes narrowed in a moment of consideration. To be perfectly frank, Sharkpaw had brought them to the rivers edge with every intention of crossing to investigate the sunning rocks for himself, embittered by the fact that he seemed to be missing out on all the exciting things the other cats had been experiencing. Selfishly, as youth often were, he felt owed it. Especially after choosing to follow them all the way out here to this damn rainforest.

He'd never see his little tugboat again.

Would never get to visit the spot he lost them.

But Torrentpaw seemed to know how it was done, paving the road with compliments and an easy out, hiding the fact that they were putting their paw down behind sweet words that made it less painful for Sharkpaw to obey.

"Yeah, I guess so.." he relented at last, gaze shifting back to the rocks with a bit of wistful envy. "Too bad we didn't find them first. They'd be perfect for Riverclan."

Oh well.

'C'mon." he said, slipping past the other and flicking his tail against their chest. "Let's go see who the better night-hunter is."

The smirk and determined glint suggested he was over the sunning rocks– for tonight, at least.

‎ ‎ ‎ ‎ ‎ ‎ ‎ Torrentpaw's gaze brightened at the other's reply, happy that his words seemed to somewhat resonate with the tom.

"You may be right..." Torrentpaw meowed, turning his gaze towards the Sunningrocks once more in thought as he weighed Sharkpaw's words. Though he was quickly pulled from his thoughts as the other apprentice brushed past him down the shore.

"Alright!" He replied, bounding after Sharkpaw before lowering himself into a crouch as he crept closer to the water's edge. "This will be great--we can bring back our catch for whoever wants it in the morning." Torrentpaw suggested, his eyes darting over the surface of the water.

"There's this trick Pineheart showed me, where you tap the water with your paw. The big fish think it's a bug, and swim right to you!" He exclaimed, shooting Sharkpaw a gaze as excited as he was the first time he saw Pineheart demonstrate it. "Have you ever seen anything like that?" He added, eyes flashing back to the water as he prepared himself for any fish that may swim by.

While the Sunning Rocks would live in the back of his mind for some time to come, Shark didn't have any issues in switching up gears when he wanted to– and as much as he was disappointed to have his plans of adventure derailed by the morality of his denmate, he was still having a lot of fun sneaking out to explore and hang out with Torrentpaw. The night was far from ruined, and he was quickly caught up in the others retelling of Pineheart's trick.

"No, but I'm definitely trying it out at some point!" he replied with a smirk as his eyes trained themselves on the water as he positioned himself on the bank a few lengths away. "How big a fish are we talkin' here?"

Didn't want to accidentally dive for the same fish and knock heads or anything.

"Adderfang showed me and Grumblepaw how to use the wind to hunt land prey the other day, though. You should have seen it– he caught this long, wriggly thing in like, two seconds. It was so cool!"

Sharkpaw had definitely been impressed-- enough to watch the tom like a hawk and then perfectly repeat the lesson himself. That dumb little finch hadn't even seen him coming!

‎ ‎ ‎ ‎ ‎ ‎ ‎ "Pretty big," Torrentpaw meowed, thinking back to the whiskered fish he had caught with Pineheart. "I barley even caught one the first time using the trick, the fish that came up was huge--and it had whiskers like a cat!" He exclaimed, hardly even believing it himself. "It surprised be so much, I barley had time to swipe at it. But I couldn't let it get away, so I fell into the river after the thing. Once I had it in my jaws, the fish wriggled around so strongly that Pineheart had to haul me back to the shore before I dropped it." Torrentpaw's eyes shone as he retold the story, his tail swaying behind him. "I'm telling you, it was huge!" He repeated, eyes wide.

Torrentpaw blinked happily as Sharkpaw began to tell his own hunting story, his expression full of wonder.

"Long wriggly thing?" He echoed, twitching his whiskers in amusement. "I've never hunted land prey, you'll have to show me too sometime!" Torrentpaw insisted excitedly.

Turning his gaze back to the water, Torrentpaw's body froze as the reflection of scales breached the surface, sending ripples around the middle of the river.

"Look!" He breathed, his voice hushed as he bumped Sharkpaw with his flank. "You won't have to wait to try it now, go on, tap it!" He exclaimed, trying his best to keep his mew a whisper. Whatever type of fish it was, it was large enough as Pineheart said to be lured in by a bug--or in this case, a paw--touching the water.
