"and this time, she won't be forgiving"
trying to connect with the clan felt harder to do the more lofty her position became. as if every death hung her closer to starlight and further from the grounding earth. alienated by both rank and history, Juniperstar is more relieved than she ought to be when approached about the many moons spent outside of the idea of a 'clan.' if it allowed others to understand her more richly, to dissect her decisions with more understanding, then she'd accept it willingly.

"What do you want to know specifically? I've got many seasons to sift through..." her whiskers twitch despite herself, ignoring that she has confessed to an age that might exceed her looks. "I've traveled a lot before ever meeting Thornstar and Fray... I also was an only kit before Chantarelleseeker, Flametongue and Bracken were born. And uh... my favorite prey is actually vole. That satisfy your curiosity? Or maybe you have more questions?" what were even the important details worth sharing? did they want to know about first crushes? the first attempt to catch prey and how it had failed? what would bind them with familiarity and empathy?

Dawnkit
status: curious
She hangs back, hiding at the edges of the crowd, not quite in the shadows, but just barely visible. She listened to Juniperstar speak, speak of a time before. A time of being free and she wonders what that was like. What it was like to not be constrained by rules and obligations. To wander where she wanted, when she wanted. Wondered what it was like to be free. And she gets a chance to ask, when the leader asks if they have other questions. So she does. "What was it like...to be free. Able to go where you wanted, when you wanted, how you wanted." And is that a freedom she could somehow obtain? Being free sounded nice. She could take her sisters and mother away from here. Far away from anything that made her mother worry, anything that hurt her sisters. Run away from the paranoia and fear that someone was out to get them.

"How far did you go?" How big was the world outside of their tiny camp. How big was the world outside of their territory. She might one day be free of the camp, but she would never be free of their home. What all was she missing out on by being stuck here? She shuffles closely just a bit, just to hear better. Her curiosity is not easily satisfied. She almost feels sorry for Juniperstar. Almost.

and every step i choose to take begins to set the world aflame

Ghoststrike had not intended to make himself part of the crowd. He'd simply been nearby to begin with, and as more cats settled around Juniperstar to listen, inadvertently found himself included. Granted, the scarred, towering Stormguard still sat comfortably off to the side with more than a few taillengths separating him from the nearest clanmate, but the fact that he hadn't moved off altogether was a testament to the fact that he was still trying to embrace whatever 'normalcy' was here.

As much of it as he could stand, anyways.

"What was it like… to be free. How far did you go?"

He didn't like the twinge he felt at those words. Didn't like that he felt himself hungering for the same answers. When the Coalition had been destroyed, it'd been Ghost's intention to discover those answers for himself. To finally taste freedom and rule his own life. Instead, he'd ended up right back in the paws of another group– albeit, one much better than the last, but still. As long as he chose to remain here, this forest and it's surrounding borderlands were all he'd ever know.

Rather irritatingly, that realization didn't bother him the way it should. The way it would have moons prior.

Webpaw opened her mouth to ask, "What was the best battle you won?" when Dawnkit jumped in, querying about... freedom, of all things.

Was she not happy to be a member of ThunderClan? Her sister Fawnkit certainly was content here, or at least seemed to be.

However....

"How far did you go?"

Now, that was something Webpaw was interested in. Her gaze often strayed outside the bounds of the borders, wondering how far the empire of ThunderClan could one day stretch.

"Have you been past the mountains? Past Highstones even? What's out there?"

SPEECH || THOUGHTS

Flurrypaw couldn't help the curiosity that pricked at his pelt as he saw Juniperstar amongst the small growing crowd of his clanmates, answering questions both large and small. Already she had answered her favorite food, sort-of answered how old she was - something that Flurrypaw decided not to dwell more on - and about how they had traveled a lot before coming to ThunderClan, meaning there was a time before ThunderClan. It was something that Flurrypaw had known about, had heard stories about, but had been curious to know more about, and as he listened to the others around him speak, watched head cocked as the apprentices began to ask their questions about freedom and what was out there, he'd wait a moment to calculate his own question, figuring out the wording that he decided on his own was the best to ask, whether or not it was something the others thought was worth asking.

"What was it like before ThunderClan was... ThunderClan?" He'd ask, curious about back when Thornstar was simply Hawthorne, when ThunderClan and ShadowClan weren't yet formed and instead were together. Of course he'd heard stories, but they were over-exaggerated by the queens in the nursery to the kits, shared by grumpy elders told to keep younger apprentices in line... he wanted the truth, whether it was boring or fun.

"and this time, she won't be forgiving"
the subject of lands unmarked by borders is of course the direction it takes. maybe she should've expected that... knowing it to be a dream that could not beheld by anyone younger than warrior age now. she squints her eyes in amusement, watching as Dawnkit approaches in tiny shifts to be a little closer despite the intensity of her questions. Webpaw and Flurrypaw too seem enamored by what they could not bear witness to, demanding a story that is far older than even most of ThunderClan's warriors are. it hasn't escaped her, the harrowing distance her age holds compared to others here... all the knowledge that comes with it.

"I came from quite a trek away... I wasn't raised in this forest, by this river. In a way, this place was as new to me as it was to you when you first got to see our borders. There are mountains even further beyond Highstones, several days of walking to get there though. There are entire Twoleg Clans, with nests stretching as far as the eye can see. It smells terrible there, I wouldn't recommend it." what a time that had been, wandering in the company of her family in search of something more secure.. something better. they'd found it, of course, eventually. she'd spent more of her life with Fray and his merry band than not. "There wasn't really anything to stop me from exploring I guess but I never really got too eager to after we met Fray. It's safer, in numbers... knowing if I failed to catch myself a mouse that day didn't mean I had to go hungry." it wasn't the unspoken law of these lands outside of the clans... there were plenty willing to fight over scraps.

"Fray believed that we were better together, more paws to help one another. He was right... I lived many seasons with him, saw the birth of many happy families-" was ready to start her own... "But he got sick... and Thornstar wasn't ready to let him go. It's hard to say goodbye... but sometimes fear is stronger than love. That's what poisoned the colony... what rotted it from the inside out." fear... greed... and selfishness.

There had been a time, when Serpentberry had first brought Thornkit and his littermates to ThunderClan, when he'd been adamant that they wouldn't be there for long. He'd imagined that Serpentberry would cure Faithkit with her herbs and knowledge that were so superior, and then they'd return to their mother's side, regardless of the state she'd been in when they'd been taken away, and regardless of Serpentberry's decision to take them in as her own. Even when his mother's body had been brought back to camp by Serpentberry's daughter and apprentice, he'd held onto the hope that they wouldn't remain in that place. It had taken the days that passed by and Faithkit and Falsekit's own complacency that had worn Thornkit down until he realized that, even if there was somewhere outside of ThunderClan for them to go, they couldn't survive on their own.

Giving in meant that Thornkit needed to better understand what ThunderClan was, but more than simply how it operated. Once Serpentberry had given them their new names, Thornkit had caught on quickly to the fact that there were those among the Clan that had looked at him differently because of the name she'd given him - Thorn had meant something to these cats, and though Thornkit had managed to parse that his namesake had been a leader for ThunderClan at one point, he didn't catch much beyond that. Stubbornly, he'd refused to ask Serpentberry herself, but when he overheard Juniperstar entertaining a crowd with stories of old, Thornkit had pushed his way to the forefront of the group and eyed the leader with a muted suspicion.

"That's what he was like? Thornstar?" Thornkit asked. Juniperstar's words weren't cut and dry, the way he'd have preferred. If Thornstar hadn't wanted to let go of this Fray individual, hadn't wanted to let him go - and wasn't that a familiar notion? - then that would have made him a determined tom, one who held fast to his beliefs. That was a good type of cat to be named after, wasn't it? But the fear... "Was he a good leader? Or was he a coward?" His question bordered on demanding, and when a thought struck him, he added, "And if your colony fell apart so easy, is that going to happen again, here?" Had Serpentberry dragged him and his siblings into a Clan destined for destruction?
