(⊹ ࣪ ˖) it's been some time since the regal woman has stepped paw out of her twoleg's home and into their lavish garden. autumn has already cloaked the yard in bright leaves, bare trees now grasping at a cold november sky, and as lady gray steps daintily from the cobblestone steps down into the remaining wildflowers dotting the lawn, she breathes deeply. scents of pine, from when her twolegs had dragged in that big tree to set up, and smoke, from their contained fire, fill her lungs, along with the smell of cold fresh air. "it's nice out, my petals" the woman calls back to her troupe of fast growing children, waving her feathery tail to coax them out of the house. frost has not yet vanquished the delicate herbs and spices her twolegs grow in well maintained clumps, and lady steps towards the low bed where she knows fronds of mallow still remain, and will until cold sinks its claws into the earth. bending to sniff the plant, she closes her eyes, swallowing back the lump in her throat. six moons ago, her lover would've been perched atop the fence, yowling some silly song to win her heart. amber eyes flick to his usual spot, then quickly look away, as emotion threatens to overwhelm.

instead, she turns back to her children as they pad from the house, beckoning them over with a soft purr and a flick of her tail. "now remember dears, if you are to wander..." she trails off to let them finish the sentence - never wander far. lady gray doesn't necessarily enjoy letting her little ones out of her sight, but they've inherited their father's wanderlust. she knows warriorclan will look out for them if she is not around. her fellow kittypets and twolegplace dwellers had known mallow well, and welcome his children as successors in his adventuring life.

a longhaired chocolate tortie mink point with low white and amber eyes a plush, lanky frame is decorated with swirls of chocolate and caramel, misty on her torso and ears. bright amber eyes are framed by short tabby stripes, and tufted ears top off her lush look. an opulent gold and lilac collar, studded with beads of crystal, hangs from her neck.

A tiny ball of wonder and fluff meandered behind their mother, steps large and confident. They loved following their mother everywhere she went and seeing what she saw. Eventually, they would grown the courage to wander away from her. For now, they were content being by her side and telling her whatever joke popped into their fresh mind.

"Never wander far!" they crowed, eager to please. They were content to allow that saying to stick in their mind. They knew their siblings would respond with varying other emotions to that phrase, and they would tease them for it until all of their bellies hurt from laughing.

Earl place themselves under Lady's stomach, back of their head pressing into her chest to absorb her warmth. "When will it get warmer, mama? I want to sit in the sun with you some more, but my nose is too cold!" They sneezed in dramatic flair to their statement and looked to see if their mother would giggle at that.

Mirabelle was taking her morning stroll, when an unfamiliar mew caught her attention. While the young kittypet was still getting used to the number of cats around the Twolegplace, therefore marking most voices unfamiliar, this was definitely a kitten! With a polite spring in her step, the fluffy cat padded along the fences, her cowbell collar jingling to announce her arrival.

Mirabelle crosses to the yard where they voices originated, beaming down at the kittens and their mother.

"Hello!" she mewed. "Pardon my approach! I'm Mirabelle- I heard you all talking and figured I'd introduce myself!" Her gaze settled on the kittens, and she blinked slowly at them.

"Hi, little ones! Aren't you adorable?"

Alfalfa loved going outside, and loved even more when their mother joined in. They worried about her sometimes. She seemed so... sad, sometimes. Brushing against her side, they bound past her down the steps and into the garden. There was a chill to the air and they replicated their mother's deep inhale. The sharp scent of the various plants assault their senses and the air chills their lungs.
"Never wander far, I know,"
they mewed, an affectionate obligation. Earl's voice drowned them out, however, and they stuck out their tongue in response.

While their sibling chattered to their mother, Alfalfa turned their attention to the many brightly-colored leaves rustling across the yard. Narrowing their eyes in concentration, they dropped low to the ground and wriggled their haunches, preparing to pounce. Their attention was drawn abruptly by a voice overhead. Frowning, they looked up to see a strange face peering down with a smile.
"Hi!"
They mewed, irritation forgotten. They padded closer to the fence and waved their tail in a friendly welcome.
"I'm Alfalfa,"
they puffed out their chest in an attempt to look older, more mature.
"Are you new around here? I've never seen you before,"
they took a deep breath, trying to take in Mirabelle's scent so they could commit it to memory.

"Never wander - oof!"

While Earl eagerly crowed the mantra, and Alfalfa said it halfheartedly, Chai falls somewhere in between... only to trip on an unseen twig and land face first in the dying grass. Despite being blind since birth, the girl still finds herself having difficulty navigating the outside. It's always changing, either with new leaf litter or, like today, twig litter. She's not usually annoyed, as she knows that once she's in her house again, it's all muscle memory and comprehension. She knows that place like the back of her paw! But out here, it's ever changing, and yet her curiosity is only ever stifled for a moment.

She pushes herself to her paws again, kicking the twig away before bounding closer to her mother. She hears a voice not too far away, and her sibling addresses them before she can. She tilts her crown towards Mirabelle, but remains locked against Lady Grey, unwilling to part too far from the luxurious molly. After all, what if this stranger is a kitnapper? She thinks she would be able to scream and kick enough to get away... but thinks it even smarter to not tempt it at all. Her tail twitches as she remains in easy silence.

Another twist of the knife, turn of the screws
It's all in your mind and it's fighting you
Arm yourself, a storm is coming
Well, kid, what you gonna do now?
It's your reflection looking back to pull you down

.

Red hues tracked the scattering shapes of the kits below, his plumey tail flicking once against the cold air as his gaze narrowed. Kits, born in winter. Every time he saw it, he wondered what odd impulse drove some cats to bring new life into the coldest moons of the year. Spring made more sense, warmth, prey, time. Let them grow fat through summer, teach them the world's teeth in fall, and let them face their first winter with some muscle on their bones. But that was his opinion. And very few ever asked for it.

He yawned, wide, sharp, fanged before stretching along the branch he lounged upon. One paw rose lazily, a claw extended so he could pick at one of his teeth, as though the moment required only that much of his attention. Clan cats. Hm. He vaguely remembered one of them, some moor-scented kid with big eyes and bigger ideals. Naive as fresh snow. He wondered if these kits would grow into the same softness, or if the world would carve something sharper out of them. He doubted it. Kittypet born as they were, they would remain soft-cheeked. One kit tumbled headfirst into a drift of dead leaves, earning a twitch of his torn ear. Had she not seen the obstacles on her way? Ah... Maybe she simply couldn't see it. His gaze swept over the others, noting their play, their carefree chatter. Far too precious. Far too easily broken by a world that didn't care how cute they were.

The older cats nearby, yes, he recognized their scents now. Part of that silly group that called themselves WarriorClan or whatever dramatic title they fancied. He'd watched them from afar once or twice. Curious creatures, but predictable. Kittypets pretending to be warrior cats. Finally, he let his voice drift down from the branch, smooth as frost on stone. " Quite the kits you've got there. " he drawled, a lazy smile tugging at the corner of his mouth, fangs flashing in the winter light. " The winter's being kind today. No snow yet. Nice change of pace. "

He settled his chin back onto his paws, eyes still following the kits with an unreadable glint, half amusement, half something quieter he'd never admit to.

Oolong was more suspicious of the space beyond their safe haven, where Mother's scent lay strongest and acted as an unbreakable fortress. The pale dappled kit was very protective of her space and keeping their surrounds as under control as possible, even if her littermates did not wholly understand. While the other kits echoed in tandem to their mother's call- Chai's a bit stunted- Oolong remained quiet. Watching, eyes narrowed and calculating.

Their ears went flat as one stranger, two, approached. Mirabelle's wide-eyed stare was met with nothing short of caution. Oolong tucked their head close to the ground, tail whipping behind her when Zii came forward. The silvery kit was defiant in display, practically sprawled to barricade Chai and Lady Gray's bodies with their own. At least Earl had the better sense to stick with mother, too, while Alfalfa bared their smile more childishly. They held in their tiny scoff.

"Don't worry, when we woke up this morning I could taste catmint. That means we'll be safe from demon-faces for today." Oolong mewed matter-of-factly, looking toward the other kittypets with a huff.

"Good to meet you, Alfalfa!" she answered, chuckling at the enthusiasm of all the tumbling kits. "I just moved in nearby." Her gaze flicked to Zii - something about the tom unsettled her, but she fluffed her fur and redirected her attention to the children.

A puzzled expression crossed her face at Oolong's matter-of-fact statement.

"Demon-faces?" she asked. "Whatever do you mean, little one?"

Alfalfa twitched an ear towards the sound of his sister falling over, somewhat used to the phenomenon. They felt bad, but based on the sound of things, she was okay, so he kept his attention trained on Mirabelle.
"Well it's nice to meet you,"
they dipped their head, a act of politeness they'd witnessed their mother perform. He jumped at the sound of another voice, another unfamiliar presence. Following the sound, they peered up at an ominous-looking stranger with red eyes. He was staring at him and his family, making their skin crawl.

Oolong spoke up from behind him, insisting it was okay because they'd tasted catmint. Whatever that meant. Whatever discomfort Alfalfa felt vanished as he rolled his eyes at their sibling. He didn't get it, and that was okay, but they did sometimes wish their siblings were a little more... normal. Like him!

Returning their full attention to Zii, he cocked their head to the side and fixed him with a stern look.
"Who are you?"
